A is for Abraham Lincoln  By: 2009 Lincoln 5th Graders Lincoln Bicentennial Celebration
Abraham Lincoln :  This is a story of our 16th president of the United States. He was a remarkable man.
Beard:   He was the first president to wear a beard. He grew it after getting a letter from eleven year old Grace Bedell, who suggested he’d look better with a beard. As an adult Grace married and lived the rest of her life in Delphos, Kansas.
Civil War Lincoln was president during theCivil War.It began only one month after he was inaugurated. Abraham joined our divided country together during his presidency. We are a stronger country today partly because of Abraham Lincoln.
isease When Lincoln was nine, his mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln, 34 years old, died of milk sickness. The disease came when she drank milk from the cow that had fed on white snakeroot.
mancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863. This declaration freed the slaves.
Abraham Lincoln signed the Homestead Act that allowed settlers to get free land and encourage settlement in the west.
G IS FOR GETTYSBURG ADDRESS One of the President Lincoln’s famous speeches was given on November 19, 1863 at a consecration  of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery where the Battle of Gettysburg had taken place.
ouse of Representatives is for…     ouse of Representatives: Lincoln served in the House of Representatives for the state of Illinois from 1847 to 1849.
Indiana and Illinois: At the age of 7, Lincoln moved with his family from Kentucky to Indiana, then as a young adult Lincoln moved to Illinois. Abe Lincoln as a young adult
J Jokes and Storyteller Abraham Lincoln did tell some good jokes and some well known sayings. Some of them are:  If I were two-faced would I be wearing this one?  When you have an elephant by the hind leg, and he is trying to run away it’s best to let him run.
Kentucky: Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in Kentucky. He had two siblings, Sarah and Thomas both died before him. He is the first president to be born out of the original colonies.
L Log Cabin Lincoln lived in a one room log cabin during his childhood.
Abraham Lincoln married Mary Todd on November 4, 1842. He was 33 years old. They had four sons, only one lived to adult hood.
Abraham Lincoln was named after his grandfather, who was killed by Indians.
ur American Cousin Our American Cousin was the play that President and Mrs. Lincoln were watching at Ford Theater when the President was shot by John Wilkes Booth, an actor. President Lincoln died the next day.
Lincoln was the first president to be photographed at his inauguration. His assassin, John Wilkes Booth can be seen standing near him in the photograph.
Quotes: Lincoln was a great writer and speaker. He is famous for many quotes: Here is just a few: .. And that this  country shall have a new birth of freedom, and that this  government, of the people, for the people, by the people, shall not perish from the Earth. S is for stovepipe hat:  Lincoln kept letters, bills and notes in his stovepipe hat.
Thomas Lincoln Abraham Lincoln`s dad was Thomas. His dad taught him how to work hard although young Abraham liked to read and study most of the time.
U.S. currency and coins: Lincoln’s image appears on several kinds of U.S. currency and coins.  They are the $5 bill and the penny.  The U.S. Mint is introducing a new penny and commemorative silver dollar in honor of his 200th birthday.
v V v v Vote: Lincoln was the first famous leader who supported the right for Women to Vote. Although women didn’t get the right until the amendment  was ratified in 1920. V V VOTE
w Wrestling This was Lincoln’s favorite sport.  His favorite dessert was White Almond Cake.
eXtra tall: Lincoln was the tallest president at 6 feet 4 inches tall.
Young Abe: Young Abe’s work ethic and desire to learn was instilled by Abe’s parents, Thomas and Nancy Hanks Lincoln and later his  stepmother, Sarah Bush Johnston Lincoln. Their opposition to slavery is probably their greatest legacy passed on to the future president.
