Women in early 20th century Australia had few rights and were often treated poorly by employers and husbands. Alice Paul suffered abuse as a servant and wife. She organized other mistreated women and held protests to advocate for women's suffrage. Paul was arrested several times and force-fed during hunger strikes in jail. Her activism grew the movement and eventually convinced the government to grant women rights to work and vote, gaining more freedoms.
