Saying Goodbye Essay
I never thought this day would come. I mean, I did know it was coming, but I just never thought
it would be this soon. Since birth, Lina has been my older sister, my companion, my confidant,
and moreover, my best friend. As years passed, I acknowledged that we were getting older, and
that the date of her departure was getting closer, yet, I did not want to believe it. Since last year,
she had been in the exhausting process of applying to universities, and by the end of May, the
University of New Orleans (UNO) granted her with a generous scholarship. With a smile full of
pride and amazement, she accepted the scholarship and reserved her space in the Psychology field

Suddenly, she stood up and a warm smile lightened her face. Her eyes shone with excitement as her
three best friends approached her. They talked and laughed zealously; they joked as if they had
forgotten what was about to happen in less than an hour. I could not help myself from watching
her. Her smile was genuine and her sight deep. Her voice was melodic while she recounted all the
anecdotes the four girls had shared for six long years. She moved her hands while she talked and
showed her perfectly white teeth while she laughed. There was no fear in her face, just a spark of
adventure glistened at the corner of her eyes. She was about to undertake a journey to the small
state of Louisiana, to the beautiful jazz city of New Orleans, and even at the verge of starting a
new life on her own, she showed no signs of anxiety or uneasiness. There were so many reasons
why not to cry: she was happy, she was young, she had a great opportunity to study abroad,
something not everyone has, and many more that would take me a whole day to mention.
However, I only needed one reason why to cry: I would no longer have her by my side. As a
tremendous storm, an urge of crying overwhelmed me, and all I could do was to sit down, hide my
face in my hands and let my emotions overpower me. She looked at me and frowned. I knew it hurt
her to see me that way, but I couldn't stop. She came near me and hugged me, without saying a word.

Overreliance On Anecdotes
One of many warnings of pseudoscience is the overreliance on anecdotes. As defined in class
(Mackenzie 2016), anecdotes are unreliable sources of evidence as they are testimonials from others
that generally support data gathered from a study. The research description mentioned how celebrity
actress Blake Lively listened to Mozart and other classical music during her pregnancy. According to
Blake Lively, this action has made her child remarkably intelligent. This is a problematic anecdote
as we do not know if she "properly" followed the study. We are unsure of whether she listened to
music for 30 minutes, one hour, or two hours as there is no control over the possible factors. Thus,
this anecdotal evidence cannot be taken into consideration.

Anecdotes And Theme Of Ethos In The PSA
In our PSA my group and I used anecdotes and theme to show ethos in order to strengthen our
message, and to persuade viewers to do their homework.
The PSA uses multiple short anecdotes to demonstrate what happens if you do your homework or
what happens if you don't do your homework. The anecdotes start with showing people who don't do

It is within the human nature to be interested in other people's experiences. Whether it be with
reality shows or blog posts, people like to hear different incidents through diverse perspectives.
Writers take advantage of this curiosity and try to tie experiences into their works. Many times
writers will include experiences of their own in order to convince their audience of their
perspective on a subject. These personal experiences are done in order to make an impact on the
audience and it is written in a certain way to make it the most efficient for the readers. The use of
personal anecdotes is effective when details are described to the point where readers can create their
own opinions, when they are used as the main topic against an argument as opposed to being an
unimportant detail, and when it has the ability to appeal to the audience's emotion.
Details within the anecdote are best described to the point where the audience can draw their own
conclusions on what is happening. Description is crucial in order to fully understand what is going
on. In the case of "Blue–Collar Brilliance", written by Mike Rose, the author puts in a lot of time to
adequately describe what the significance of his experiences mean and how they contribute to the

players, even when they are not." (77) There is no evidence stating how well Latinos performed;
The only proof of discrimination given is that contestants supposedly see them as poor players, but

the elderly "are eliminated far out of proportion to their skills." (77) Again, the claim contains no
evidence that they possessed good or bad skills. This major lack of context and evidence that voters
claimed to be fair–minded makes for a very flawed example of people hoarding information to

Foer's Anecdotes
Many different authors and writers use different styles and techniques to engage and persuade the
intended audience of their work. Writers try to establish a good connection with the readers to
cause the readers to believe their claims. For a writer to be able to engage their reader and keep
their attention is a very important engagement strategies. In the book "They Say, I say," two authors
have their writing inside and they use different strategies to engage and persuade their readers. The
first writer is Gladwell. Gladwell writes about how technology will not be the reason for social
change in the world. The other writings strategies being evaluated is Foer. Foer writes about how he

Both writers are effective with their strategies. Foer uses anecdotes to create personal connection
and open up to the reader to engage them, while Gladwell uses anecdotes to excite the reader.
Foer's way of using anecdotes engages younger readers much easier than Gladwell's. Younger
readers tend not to read through Foer's personal anecdotes as lies and see his anecdotes as his
own personal experiences. Gladwell's anecdotes may attract older generations easier, because his
anecdotes are stories from the past. These anecdotes can cause nostalgia in the older readers and
may cause them to be more engaged and interested in reading. However, Foer does an overall better
job of engaging most readers. Foer keeps his essay very personal all the way through. He is writing
almost like a friend telling you just to try being vegetarian. It keeps the reader more engaged,
because readers would rather have friend talk to them, than a guardian figure pushing an idea onto
them.
The ability to engage the reader and keep their attention is one of the most important skills a
writer needs and must utilize. Foer and Gladwell both use anecdotes to engage their readers,
however in somewhat different ways. Foer opens up to the reader and makes an emotional
connection, while Gladwell tries to interest the reader and create a hunger for knowledge. Both

Othering: A Short Story
Othering happens everyday without us noticing. We go hang out with people like us, similar to us,
but don't talk to or try to be anywhere near people who are different. For example smart people
usually hang out with other smart people, or the athletic kids hang out with the other athletic kids.
Some people don't notice it because they grew up like that. Othering has embedded itself into our
world, and most people have no idea its happening.

I have friends spanning across tons of groups. Smart, athletic, popular, unpopular, slow, fast, etc. I
don't judge people by the world's standards. I don't look at people and if they wear glasses I don't
think, "nerd." I get to know people's and see who they are then. Sure, people still judge me, and
they associate me with a certain group, but I don't do that. The reason I do that it because I've
been judged like that before and hate that. When I first moved here, I knew no one. I try to talk to
someone, and they look at me if I was crazy. For a week living here, no one talked to me because I
was the new kid. That was easily the worst week of my life. So same thing doesn't happen too them,
I don't judge.
But othering truly started in the past. It was so common in the past, it managed to stay alive this
long. Othering started happening in Egypt. That was when slavery started. Because this started it
would lead too many Centuries of othering and mistreatment because of the color of people's skin.

that people do because they don't do what they want. Most of us are "deeply and literally
self–centered" because of the harsh world everyone has grew up in, most people in the world have
become self–centered, granted there are some that do kind acts to the community and people, but
people tend to only think of themselves.
3. What impact does the hypothetical narrative of "an average day" have (prgs 7 – 11)?
Wallace's inlook of "an average day" allows theaudience and readers to have a view of what the
adult life can be like, he strikes fear and dread in the audience because they now don't want their
lives to be miserable like the life Wallace explained. The speech will drive people to make their life
different and not be in a routine.
4. Throughout the speech, Wallace emphasizes that he is not offering "banal platitude[s]" (paragraph
2) or "moral advice" (paragraph 12). Explain what he means by this. Do you think he successfully
avoids these things? Explain.
Wallace is trying to say that he isn't the person who is telling them what they have to do in their
life, and that the persons themselves are who is supposed to make their own life how they want it
to be. I think he avoids telling them what to do because he only gave examples of how a routine
life can be like and for them to be conscious of the life they are in.

A person's outlook, or perspective, is molded by not only the events they experience across a
lifetime, but also the knowledge they acquire. Generally, having more knowledge leads to decision
making and critical thinking skills that are beneficial to an individual and those around them.
However, not everyone has the same opportunities to attain equal amounts of knowledge, or
experience events that strongly influence perspective, due to racial or societal barriers. This is seen

early life experiences, as she discovers what is means to be successful while embracing her

an individual's perspective in a positive way.

Questions On Open Ended Questions Essay
There are many techniques to asking a question. Open ended questions where we are wanting
many details from the person or closed ended questions where we simply just need a yes or a no
answer. Funnel questions are where we need to weed out and focus on finding the exact
information we are looking for. We need to Probe the person and really think about what we are
asking for in hopes of getting a specific answer. There are also rhetorical questions where we don't
really need an answer at all. When asking a personal question it is extremely important to be
considerate and use the proper method of questioning to get the best result. When we know the
person is sharing something of a personal nature we want to ask an open question where they feel
safe and encouraged to share what they feel comfortable sharing.
When the topic is that of a sensitive nature we don't want to ask yes or no questions or risk being
too blunt and possibly offend the person. We also don't want to probe someone for one part of
information we were after and become distracted or seem uninterested with the rest of the things
they have to say. The idea is to be open, caring & empathetic. Everyone loves to talk about
themselves, however, being able to assess the situation and knowing how far you can go with
someone is a great skill to develop.

From the very start, suicide has been a problem for many and it's not something that you can just fail
to notice. A countless number of young teens are attempting or have successfully taken their own
lives due to pain that has being inflicted on them. Without being able to actually cope with the pain,
they use suicide as the solution of ending all of their suffering. Did you know that, suicide is the third
leading cause of deaths among youth, but not just youth also among young adult? Suicide is an issue
that we until this day still have going on, and it can be prevented in many ways. I have lost family
and friends from the past, who took their own lives, without knowing the reason why they did it. In
addition, it left me wondering why and what could I have done, If I would have just listened to what
they had to say.
Various people don't actually get what is suicide yes it when someone kills themselves, but it can
also be someone who attempts to. People may think that one just takes their life just to get the
attention of others however, that is not true. I have come with a deeper understanding that there is
always a story behind why they did it. The world just has numerous of things happening all at once,
that there isn't enough time to focus on just one thing. Along with the pressures of having to look a
certain way and hostility of others isn't helping either. Suicide rates, therefore, are increasing
dramatically because of the increase of societal pressures and lack of time to address mental health
needs.

Personal Narrative Of A Teacher
Personal Narrative I am a mother and wife to 3 beautiful children and husband and I felt like I was
starting over every 2 years. I wanted to be a dance teacher. Well, I did that and I would probably still
be doing it if I didn't have a mortgage and 3 kids. Then I wanted to be hairstylist. Let's just say that
didn't go as planned. $50,000 of debt in student loans later, and I have decided I want to become a

was just a couple credits from finishing that degree but life happen and hinder me from finishing.
If I could go back I probably would have went to a community college to get my basics and had
more life experiences before entering into a university. Because I have attended college previous
to GSC my most concerned to pursuit of my goals is financial Aid. So far I have been able to
receive aid through loans but I still have another year and not enough aid to cover it. I work full
time and really don't have the extra funds to pay for the remaining. And due to my age and where I
am in school I am not eligible for scholarships. So this process to reach this goal gets longer and
longer. To keep a positive light on things I planned to become a paraprofessional this year so that I
can maybe get more of a hand on experience within my field.

"The Ways We Lie" is an essay written by Stephanie Ericsson, first published in the Utne Reader
in 1993. The Utne Reader is an American magazine that publishes pieces from alternative media

author says "Unfortunately, it [stereotype] often shuts down the original thinking, giving those
hungry for the truth a candy bar of misinformation instead of a balanced meal." (pg. 164). By
using metaphors, the author allows the readers minds to wander and think about what is being said
in a way they can easily comprehend. Next, the author uses hyperbole to dramatize her points. An
example of this would be "I once tried going a week without telling a lie, and it was paralyzing"
(pg. 159). Hyperboles benefit the essay in that they provide a dramatic contrast, thus allowing the
point to stand out more. Finally, there is a profusion of rhetorical questions in "The Ways We Lie",
especially at the beginning and ends of the essay, which assist the author in strengthening the
purpose. In fact, Ericsson asks when talking about the consequences of lying and tell the truth:
"What far–reaching consequences will I, or others, pay as a result of my lie? Will someone's trust
be destroyed? Will someone else pay my penance because I ducked out?"(pg. 160). Similarly, in
the second to last paragraph, the audience is asked how much people will tolerate before they
become "sick and tired of being sick and tired" and also when will they stand up and assert their
right to trust, "realize the truth is in the fine print" and when will they stop

Speech On Suicide Prevention
On average, about 44,193 Americans die by suicide every year and worldwide the suicide rate has
gone up by 60 percent in the last 50 years. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the US.
The most common reasons or risk factors to why people would resort to suicide are depression,
bullying, hopelessness, fear, perfectionism, regrets, and etc. Over the years the suicide rate keeps
increasing more and more, and the more it increases, the more people are becoming aware of the
problem and are doing several efforts to prevent suicide to hopefully decrease the amount of people
who commit suicide, but the question is would promoting suicide prevention decrease the rate of
suicide? Promoting and advocating suicide prevention would decrease the rate of suicide because it
raises awareness to everyone and offers help to people who are hurting or struggling with their life
and are considering removing themselves from existence.
To begin with, suicide is a subject that is often very hard to talk about, but no matter how hard it
is to talk about it should always be spoken of. It should be spoken about to everyone or it should
reach out to everyone by promoting the prevention of it, because suicide can be prevented
sometimes, and it offers awareness to everyone. For example, the suicide prevention lifeline
organization has a National Suicide Prevention Month to help raise awareness of suicide
prevention during September. What the organization does all month to help raise awareness is
gather health advocates, prevention organizations, survivors, allies, and community members to
promote the awareness of suicide. Ways to prevent suicide are by asking people to constantly
check in on a person and asking them how they feel etc., by being there for them because studies
show that individuals are more likely to feel less depressed, less suicidal, less overwhelmed, and
more helpful after speaking to someone who listens to them without judgement. The suicide lifeline
organization also advocates a suicide prevention hotline so people who are in trouble and are
attempting to kill themselves can call the hotline and receive the proper help and advice they need
to do the right decision and hopefully move on with their life

Based on the observations completed, the children need adult guidance in managing feelings and
impulses. For example, Cash did not want to share the ball with Alex or Liam, they went to the
