16. Social Media Helps Us Become More,
not Less Connected
Why Introverts Like Social Media
• Connect with people they might not in public because they avoid
crowds
• Interact with a lot of people in ways that are not draining
• Gives an opportunity to meet someone before meeting in person
so they can connect more easily once they meet
• Opportunity to extend a conversation they might not in person
17. FACEBOOK PAGE VS. WEBSITE

yours,

Printing press new and conflicting ideas became more available. People had to decide for themselves what was believable. The answer to that is not to be absent, but to be in the mix. Throw your hat into the ring.
Assume there are even only 20 people in your congregation on Facebook. Assume they less than average with only 100 friends. Maybe their friends are average and they do have 300 friends. Start doing the math and think of what your reach can be if you can even get some of those 20 people to post things about the church.

These are all photos I have posted on Facebook. None of them are any different than things we would talk about in “real life” Don’t you talk about what you ate at the last restaurant you went to? Don’t you show your friends your nails when they get done? Your pets?
Among all the other things people are sharing, you want them to share this
This is not about how social media is going to get more people to come to church. I can’t promise that. I don’t know if it will. It might. I’m talking about learning how to communicate in a way people communicate now. And helping people use it to talk about their faith. It’s like a mission field. People didn’t send missionaries off to get more people to come to their church. They sent them off so people could hear the Gospel in new places.
Ideally you want to have a webpage AND a Facebook page. A webpage takes more resources and technical knowledge to have a good one (and don’t have a webpage unless you can have a good one) So if you aren’t ready for a webpage, at least have a Facebook page. But they do serve different purposes
I share a beautiful photograph and prayer or positive thought every morning on the Synod Facebook page.
These prayers have tremendous reach far beyond what you can imagine. This is the power of social media to touch people far beyond your imagination.
My friend Pastor David Hansen posts something like this every Sunday morning. People get used to it and look forward to it.
I do a little cheerleading for preachers every Sunday morning.
Here is an example of a simple way to engage people on your page. Don’t ask deep profound or personal questions. Ask them what kind of cookie they like. Another good question is What is your favorite hymn? It’s a good way to get engagement on your page. People see that and think you are a friendly place.
These are all ways I ways I took photos and checked in to church. You can do this unobtrusively. You don’t have to stand up and take a photo of the pastor all the time.
