More than half of consumers now use a smartphone to access the internet, whilst a third have a tablet in their
home. Already this is having a significant impact on behaviour, as entertainment and commerce activities
continue to shift towards mobile. Paul Davies, Senior Technology Analyst
It appears Christmas 2012 prompted an explosion of tablet sales, as household ownership has now reached
33%, up from 24% in September 2012. Far more consumers are now using mobile devices to access the
internet, as generally consumers prefer gadgets with multiple functions, something which may be harming the
sales of more ‘specialist’ devices (such as digital cameras and eReaders).
The introduction of 4G may not be a sole driver in prompting the purchasing of new mobile products in the
short term, but those who do use this service will use far more data as they download and stream more content
whilst on the go.
This report examines the trends in consumer technology and digital media in the UK. This is the first report in
2013’s Digital Trends series, which looks at changes in device ownership and usage over the past three
months. Data from Mintel’s consumer research also show the products that people are looking to
purchase over the coming months, and the analysis looks at what is sparking the growth, or causing the
decline, of sales of devices.
