cities. The Czech Republic is located in the
centre of Europe. It is a small country, it has
a population of 10 million people. The capital
city is PRAGUE.

An old potter lived in the woods. One day a rider
came to the potter´s, because he wanted to go to
Prague for business but he had got lost. The potter
took care of him and his horse. He gave him fried eggs.
They talked and the potter told him about his
problems and pots cracking in the kiln. The potter
showed him the shards. The rider knew that the cause
was silver. The rider took the shards to Prague. He
came back with his brother. They bought the cottage
from the potter. When they broke the kiln in the
cottage, they found silver. They founded a mine and
next to the mine they built the church in the place of
St. John the Baptist. They started to live there and in
this way Jihlava came to life.
Ein alter Töpfer wohnte im Wald. Eines Tages kam ein
Kaufmann ins Töpfers Haus, weil er nach Prag reiten wollte.
Er hatte sich aber verirrt. Der Töpfer kümmerte sich um ihn
und sein Pferd. Der Töpfer briet ihm Eier im Schmalz . Sie
unterhielten sich und der Töpfer erzählte ihm von seinen
Problemen und von Töpfen, die im Ofen bersten. Er zeigte
ihm Scherben davon. Der Kaufmann wusste, dass die
Ursache Silber ist. Er nahm Scherben nach Prag. Er kam mit
seinem Bruder zurück. Sie kauften das Haus des Töpfers. Als
sie den Ofen in der Hütte zerschlagen, fanden sie Silber. Sie
errichteten ein Bauwerk und neben dem Bauwerk bauten
sie das Johanneskirchlein. Dort begannen sie zu leben und
auf diese Weise kam Iglau zum Leben.

Iglau is the German name of the city, it means
hedgehog. It is a symbol of the city. The local
beer is called HEDGEHOG as well. JEŽEK is the
Czech word for hedgehog.

Iglau ist die deutsche Bezeichnug der Stadt und
es bedeutet der Igel. Der Igel ist das Wahrzeichen
der Stadt. Das Lokalbier wird auch so genannt –
Igel. JEŽEK ist der tschechische Ausdruck für Igel.

Jihlava is the oldest mining town in the Czech
Republic. It was founded in the 13th century.
Silver was mined in the area. It was used to
make silver coins. In the Middle Ages it was
mostly inhabited by Germans.

Das Silbererz wurde in diesem Gebiet gefördert. In

Following the silver mining a
network of underground corridors
came into existence. It is 50 000
square metres large and 25
kilometres long. The corridors go
into the depth of 2-14 metres. In the
2nd world war it was used as a cover.

Während der Silberförderung
entstanden die Erdgänge. Die
Gänge nehmen 50 000 m2 ein und
sind 25 km lang. Sie befinden sich in
der Tiefe 2 bis 14 m. Im 2. Weltkrieg
wurden sie als Luftschützräume
benutzt.

medieval walls including one of the
gates, which protected the entrance
to the city. It is the so called GATE OF
OUR LADY.

first Czechoslovakian President T.G.
Masaryk. It is dominated by the Jesuit
St. Ignatius' of Loyola church. The
plague column was raised to protect the
town against plague epidemy.

There are a few other churches. For example the Saint
Jacob Church. The oldest one is Saint John the Baptist
Church. There are many beautiful sceneries, parks
and places to relax.

Jihlava has had a long industrial tradition since the
19th century. Today it is mainly represented as
follows: automotive industry, engineering,
furnishings, food, glassblowing, wood
manufacturing. The biggest company is Bosch
Diesel. There are 4,500 workers. They produce
pumps for diesel motor.
Jihlava hat eine lange industrielle Tradition seit dem 19.
Jahrhundert. Heute sind vor allem diese Industriezweige
vertreten: Automobilindustrie, Maschinenbau,
Möbelindustrie, Lebensmittelindustrie, Glasindustrie,
Holzproduktion. Das größte Unternehmen ist Bosch
Diesel, wo 4500 Menschen beschäftigt sind. Hier
produziert man Pumpen für Dieselmotoren.
