Shows brief explanation of Photovoltaic energy, Advantages, disadvantages, probability in the philippines and other solar related invention and farms throughout the world.
2. What is Solar Photovoltaic
Technology?
• Solar cells, also called photovoltaic (PV) cells by scientists,
convert sunlight directly into electricity. PV gets its name from
the process of converting light (photons) to electricity
(voltage), which is called the PV effect.
• PV effect was discovered in 1954, when scientists at Bell
Telephone discovered that silicon (an element found in sand)
created an electric charge when exposed to sunlight.
• Solar Photovoltaic Technology is focused on Solar Panels.
• Solar panels converts 12% to 21% of energy from the sun
depending on the material and the temperature.
3. • Many nations already noticed the potential of Solar
Photovoltaic technology that they started implementing the use
of the said technology.
Photovoltaic SUDI shade is an
autonomous and mobile station in France
that provides energy for electric vehicles
using solar energy.
The Solar Settlement, a sustainable
housing community project in Freiburg,
Germany.
4. Additional Info
• Germany is currently the leading country when it comes to
Solar PV technology, but soon will be overtaken by China
which is currently second but leads on the number of Solar PV
technology added every year.
• China has the Largest Solar Farm in the world (Longyangxia
Dam Solar park)
• It has the total capacity of 850 MW covering 14 km²
5. Advantages
• Solar energy is a renewable energy source.
• Once a solar panel is installed, solar energy can be produced free
of charge.
• Solar energy will last for a very long time whereas it is estimated
that the world’s oil reserves will last for 30 to 40 years.
• Solar energy causes no pollution (air, water, land, noise, and
radiation) .
• Very little maintenance is needed to keep solar cells running.
There are no moving parts in a solar cell which makes it
impossible to really damage them.
• In the long term, there can be a high return on investment due
to the amount of free energy a solar panel can produce, it is
estimated that the average household will see 50% of their energy
coming in from solar panels.
6. Disadvantages
• Solar panels can be expensive to install resulting in a
time-lag of many years for savings on energy bills to
match initial investments.
• Electricity generation depends entirely on a countries
exposure to sunlight; this could be limited by a
countries climate.
• Solar power stations do not match the power output of
similar sized conventional power stations, in other
words, Solar panels takes up great amount of
horizontal space.
• Solar power is used to charge batteries so that solar
powered devices can be used at night. The batteries can
often be large and heavy, taking up space and needing
to be replaced from time to time.
7. Probability In the Philippines
• Solar Photovoltaic Technology is present and is
being utilized by Filipinos.
• Many Solar Technology provider companies like
Meister Solar, Optimus Energy, Equator
Company, MATEC and other local and foreign
companies are already investing in the
Philippines.
8. Proofs and Examples
• Solar Philippines ,a
renewable energy firm and
the largest developer of
Solar Rooftop power plants
in South East Asia,
constructed the largest Solar
farm in the Philippines.
• It supplies 63.3 megaWatt
for a 160 hectares land and
Php 5.7 billion cost.
• It is located in Batangas
9. • Sinag (as seen on the right)
is the first entry of
Philippines to the World
Solar Challenge.
• It ranked 11.
• All parts are proudly made
by Filipinos, including the
Mono crystalline panels
which was manufactured in
Laguna.
10. Further more...
• Solar Photovoltaic technology holds a very promising
future for human civilization. Although for now, the
efficiency of the solar panels are low, but with the
continuous advancement of our technology, we can
expect higher efficiency for a lower price.
• It is also worth note taking that solar PV technology
is starting to get cheaper than Coal powered
generators. This means more clean solar energy and
less heavy pollution producer plants.
