friendship with God by the death
of his Son while we were still his
enemies, we will certainly be

by his life.”
Rom. 5:10
13. Eden - Adam & Eve, intimate,
ritual-free, religion-free
relationship with God. No guilt

This was lost after the Fall.
A few OT figures then had
friendship with God - Moses,
Abraham, David (man after
God’s own heart), Job, Enoch
Noah
15. “Now we can rejoice in our
wonderful new relationship with
God----all because of what our

making us friends of God.”
Rom. 5:11
16. And all of this is a gift from God, who
brought us back to himself through Christ.
And God has given us this task of reconciling

17. God invites us into friendship with
Father, Son and HS.
John 15:15
Friend here is not a casual acquaintance
bit a close, trusted relationship - the same
word is used for a best man at a
wedding, or a king’s inner circle of trusted
people with close contact, direct access
and confidential information.
18. Acts 17:26-27 TM
he made the entire human race and made
the earth hospitable, with plenty of time and
space for living so we could seek after God,
and not just grope around in the dark but
actually find him. He doesn't play hide-and-
seek with us. He's not remote; he's near.
So what does it mean to be a friend of
God - warren gives 6 secrets of
friendship with God.
Becoming a Best Friend of God...
20. 1) Through constant
conversation with Him
Constant conversation cannot be obtained
without a daily “quiet time”.
We need also to talk earnestly with Him all
through the day about what we are doing,
wondering or thinking about - every
activity, conversation, problem and thought.
“pray all the time.”
1 Thess. 5:17
21. Be joyful always; pray continually; give
thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's
will for you in Christ Jesus.
1 Thess. 5:16-18
How do you achieve this?
22. Everything you do can be spending time with
God - if you ask him - and remain aware
of his presence.
Brother Lawrence - Practicing the Presence
of God
A cook in a French monastery - turned
common place, menial tasks into acts of praise
and communion with God.
Demonstrated the simplicity of doing your
daily routine tasks ‘with God’ - no need to get
away to be with God.
23. Eph 4:5-6
You have one Master, one faith, one baptism,
one God and Father of all, who rules over all,
works through all, and is present in all.
Everything you are and think and do is
permeated with Oneness.
24. Brother Lawrence also
suggested praying
shorter conversational
prayers with God -
praying these continually
through the day.
“I do not advise you to use
a great multiplicity of
words in prayer, since long
discourses are often the
occasion for wandering”
25. Warren suggests praying “breath prayers”.
Do this throughout the day - choose a
simple prayer or short phrase of the Bible;
“I’m depending on you”
Help me trust you”
“For me to live is Christ”
“You are my God”
“You will never leave me”
26. This needs to be practiced each day - as
with developing many skills.
You might need reminders - visual notes,
alarms, o’clocks...
This is not to experience the presence
God, but to practice the reality that he is
present with you.
This is then becoming a lifestyle of worship.
27. 2) Through continual meditation
Meditation on the word of
God is encouraged
throughout the Bible.
Meditate on who he is, what
he has done, what he has
said...
This is why memorising the
Bible is important.
28. ...God “revealed himself to Samuel through
His word”.
1 Sam. 3:21
“Friendship with God is reserved for those
who reverence Him. With them alone He
shares the secrets of His promises.”
Ps. 25:14
29. Worry is going
over things time
and again in our
mind - meditation
is going over
God’s word time
and again in your
mind
30. Job 23:12 I have not departed from the
commands of his lips; I have treasured the
words of his mouth more than my daily bread.
Ps 119:97 Oh, how I love your law! I meditate
on it all day long.
31. Ps 77:12
I will meditate on
all your works and
consider all your
mighty deeds.
