2. What is Critical Reading ?
- Analytic activity
- Active approach to reading that involves examination of text
- Draw inferences from the choice of language observed
- Forms connections with prior knowledge and experience
- Evaluate the evidence
- Understand and analyze text
When we read critically, we question both the text and our own reading of it.

judgment about
what the author

What do we do
when we read
critically?
Critical reader will have questions
while reading, example:
-> What’s the main point ?
-> What’s the example used to support
the key point?
->Are these examples useful?
->Do you agree with them?
->Can you think of better ones?
Analyzing and evaluating
information to decide
whether to accept or
decline.

 Discover authors’ argument to understand the
text.
 Helps to organize main ideas from a given topic.
 Helps to understand more difficult reading
assignment and to obtain a better understanding
from what was read.
 Helps to make opinions and assumptions based on
what we read
