Simple Way To Get 'Wild Foods' In The Diet

A few years ago I was waiting in the office of my skin doctor having a routine
visit right after he had found (as well as taken out) a melanoma from my body.
This was one among many 5-year bi-monthly checkups where tests and checks
would be run to be sure there wasn't any reoccurrence of the melanoma.

I recall him walking in and probably noticed the worry over my face as I was
waiting for the results. He informed me immediately that the results were
positive (as always). He recommended, as he always did, to try to prevent from
getting burned by the sun, which will help make getting melanoma less likely.
He additionally repeated that even though melanoma is the most fatal cancer,
it is also the most curable, when caught soon enough, so make sure to not miss
any visits.

Always being aware that food plays a part in health, as well as knowing that
this particular doctor was "health conscious" as he was a vegan and arrived to
work on a bike often, on this specific visit I thought to bring up food. Although I
sort of ate "whatever" at the time, I wanted to know "isn't what we eat a huge
factor in our health as well as our ability to fight disease?". His reply was along
the lines of "you don't eat processed foods and you consume plenty of greens,
so what else can you do".

I think that was his way of suggesting a whole foods diet. As I dove head first
into educating myself regarding nutrition, whole foods, the completely
different diets, it eventually brought me to the idea of vegetarianism, as well
as veganism. I figured that those diets equated to health but that's not
necessarily the case, so I moved along with my exploration to discover how to
be the most healthy.

When I found out about raw food, I figured that was it. I figured eating a raw,
organic, vegan diet was the perfect way to eat. I'm not so convinced anymore
that the "typical" raw food diet is "it" after digging a little deeper. I listened to
a lot of interviews with Daniel Vitalis in relation to "wild foods", and it really
made a lot of sense. He discusses how wild foods are "more powerful" and that
these plants might tap their root through several layers of cement just to stay
alive. Plus, they generally have medicinal characteristics that can help to
"tonify" our organs.

He has said that a lot of what we eat, or a lot of what raw food eaters as well
as vegans eat is what he calls domesticated foods, foods that were modified
over the decades to become new variations of old foods. I believe he said that
the domesticated banana, being totally different from its' wild brethren, is
likened to the difference between a chihuahua and a wolf (a wild dog).

With that said, how do we start "going wild"? It's not always simple for people
to walk through the forest, find wild health food and prepare teas, tinctures,
salads, etc, but there is something that we could do. "Bitters" are available in
food stores, and these might be the nearest to "wild" foods that are available
"domestically".

Some of the typical "bitter" greens that I personally include in my food regime
are: dandelion greens, arugula, collard greens, watercress and endive. Spinach
and kale may qualify as bitters nevertheless we're already getting those into
our smoothies aren't we? :)

With that said, how do we start "going wild"? It's not always simple for people to walk through the forest, find wild health food and prepare teas, tinctures, salads, etc, but there is something that we could do. "Bitters" are available in food stores, and these might be the nearest to "wild" foods that are available "domestically". Some of the typical "bitter" greens that I personally include in my food regime are: dandelion greens, arugula, collard greens, watercress and endive.
