About N. R. Murthy
Mr. N. R. Narayana Murthy is the Chairman of
 the Board and Chief Mentor of Infosys
 Technologies Limited.
He was born on August 20, 1946 in Karnataka,
 India.
He obtained his B.E. degree from University of
 Mysore in 1967 and his M.Tech. from IIT, Kanpur
 in 1969.
He founded Infosys in 1981 along with six
 software professionals.

• His first position was at IIM Ahmadabad as
  chief system programmer.

• After IIM Ahmadabad , he then joined Patni
  Computer Systems in Pune.

• Before moving to Mumbai , Murthy met his
  wife Sudha Murthy in Pune who at the time was
  an engineer working at Tata Engineering and
  Locomotive Co. Ltd. (Telco, now known as Tata
  Motors) in Pune.

• In 1981, he founded Infosys with six other
  software professionals.
• He served as president of the National
  Association     of    Software  and   Service
  Companies, INDIA from 1992 to 1994.
• Under his leadership, Infosys was listed on
  NASDAQ in 1999. He served as the Executive
  Chairman of the Board and Chief Mentor from
  2002 to 2006.
• Infosys was also ranked No. 14 among the most
  respected companies in the world by Reputation
  Institute's Global Pulse 2008.

LEADERSHIP STYLE

The style of Narayana Murthi has mixture of some
  styles that are given below……
• POSITIVE STYLE- Mr. Murthi has a positive
  style of leadership i.e. a leader promote his
  follower to work hard by offering them rewards.
  Mr. Murthi promote his employee as per their
  ability.He always believe in Honesty and Loyalty.

• DEMOCRATIC STYLE- Also known as
  participative   style.  The     authority    is
  decentralised.AS IN Case of Mr. Murthy, he
  founded INFOSYS with 6 other professionals.
  The decision are taken wholeheartedly. He was
  the CEO of the company for 21 years, from 1981
  to 2002.

• Under his leadership, Infosys was listed on NASDAQ
  in 1999.
• He served as the Executive Chairman of the Board
  and Chief Mentor from 2002 to 2006.
• Mr. Murthi is a good leader for his employers as for
  being a good leader one has a clear vision and a clear
  objective for himself and for his employers, that he
  had.

• He started Infosys at the share of $250 in 1981 and
  this time share of Infosys are more than $2 billion U.S
• Mr. Murthy articulated, designed and implemented the
  Global Delivery Model which has become the
  foundation for the huge success in IT services
  outsourcing from India.
• He has led key corporate governance initiatives in
  India.
• He is an IT advisor to several Asian countries.
• Mr. Murthy serves as an independent director on the
  boards of several global companies including Unilever,
  NV, Unilever, plc and HSBC

AWARDS
• Mr. Murthy is the recipient of numerous awards and
  honors.
• The Economist ranked him 8th in the list of the 15
  most-admired global leaders in 2005.
• He was ranked 28th among the world's most-
  respected business leaders by the Financial Times
  in 2005.
• In 2004, TIME magazine identified him as one of the
  10 global leaders who are helping shape the future
  of technology.
• In 2006, TIME magazine voted him as one of the
  Asian heroes who have brought about revolutionary
  changes in Asia in the last 60 years.

• He was featured in Business Week's "The Stars of
  Asia" for three consecutive years - 1998, 1999
  and 2000.
• Mr. Murthy was voted the "World Entrepreneur of
  the Year" by Ernst & Young in 2003.
• He was chosen as the "Business Process
  Innovator" by The Economist in 2007.
• He was awarded the "Padma Vibhushan", the
  second highest civilian award by the Government
  of India in 2008.
• The Government of France conferred the Officer
  of the Legion of Honor in 2008.

Lessons from N.R Murthy
•.
• Think Big. Don't Hesitate to Start small.
    In 1981, a determined Murthy started Infosys
  with Rs 10,000 he borrowed from his wife. In few
  years, Infosys went on to become one of the
  largest wealth creators in the country.
• Treat your People Good, but Your Best Better.
    Murthy always had a thing for good performers.
  And he rewarded them well. When Infosys
  decided to give its employees stock options,
  Murthy insisted that some shares be given to good
  performers through the 'Chairman's quota.'

• Sharing is Caring.
    After the IPO, Infosys decided to share a
  portion of its equity with employees. This helped
  them retain talent and gave employees a sense
  of ownership. Murthy is proud of having given
  away stocks worth over Rs 50,000 crore to
  employees.
• Talent Spotting and Division of Labour
    Murthy is known to have an eye for talent and
  a talent for dividing labor. Nandan was given
  sales responsibilities while Kris and Shibu did
  the tech stuff. N S Raghavan was asked to
  handle people and Dinesh was assigned quality.

• Hold on to Your People but don't stick.
    Letting go is never easy but its not good to
  cling on to your colleagues either. Amongst the
  founders, Ashok Arora, Nandan Nilekani and K
  Dinesh have quit Infosys. Infy veteran
  Mohandas Pai has also left Infosys.
• You might fail, but get started Learn from
  mistakes and move on.
    In 1976, Murthy founded Softronics, a
  company that lasted a year and a half. When he
  realized that his first venture wasn't taking off,
  he moved on.

  • 2. 2 About N. R. Murthy Mr. N. R. Narayana Murthy is the Chairman of the Board and Chief Mentor of Infosys Technologies Limited. He was born on August 20, 1946 in Karnataka, India. He obtained his B.E. degree from University of Mysore in 1967 and his M.Tech. from IIT, Kanpur in 1969. He founded Infosys in 1981 along with six software professionals.
  • 3. 3 • His first position was at IIM Ahmadabad as chief system programmer. • After IIM Ahmadabad , he then joined Patni Computer Systems in Pune. • Before moving to Mumbai , Murthy met his wife Sudha Murthy in Pune who at the time was an engineer working at Tata Engineering and Locomotive Co. Ltd. (Telco, now known as Tata Motors) in Pune.
  • 4. 4 • In 1981, he founded Infosys with six other software professionals. • He served as president of the National Association of Software and Service Companies, INDIA from 1992 to 1994. • Under his leadership, Infosys was listed on NASDAQ in 1999. He served as the Executive Chairman of the Board and Chief Mentor from 2002 to 2006. • Infosys was also ranked No. 14 among the most respected companies in the world by Reputation Institute's Global Pulse 2008.
  • 5. 5 VISSION AND MISSION • Vision “To be a globally respected corporation that provides best-of-breed business solutions, leveraging technology, delivered by best- in-class people." • Mission “"To achieve our objectives in an environment of fairness, honesty, and courtesy towards our clients, employees, vendors and society at large."
  • 6. 6 LEADERSHIP STYLE The style of Narayana Murthi has mixture of some styles that are given below…… • POSITIVE STYLE- Mr. Murthi has a positive style of leadership i.e. a leader promote his follower to work hard by offering them rewards. Mr. Murthi promote his employee as per their ability.He always believe in Honesty and Loyalty.
  • 7. 7 • DEMOCRATIC STYLE- Also known as participative style. The authority is decentralised.AS IN Case of Mr. Murthy, he founded INFOSYS with 6 other professionals. The decision are taken wholeheartedly. He was the CEO of the company for 21 years, from 1981 to 2002.
  • 8. 8 • Under his leadership, Infosys was listed on NASDAQ in 1999. • He served as the Executive Chairman of the Board and Chief Mentor from 2002 to 2006. • Mr. Murthi is a good leader for his employers as for being a good leader one has a clear vision and a clear objective for himself and for his employers, that he had.
  • 9. 9 • He started Infosys at the share of $250 in 1981 and this time share of Infosys are more than $2 billion U.S • Mr. Murthy articulated, designed and implemented the Global Delivery Model which has become the foundation for the huge success in IT services outsourcing from India. • He has led key corporate governance initiatives in India. • He is an IT advisor to several Asian countries. • Mr. Murthy serves as an independent director on the boards of several global companies including Unilever, NV, Unilever, plc and HSBC
  • 10. 10 AWARDS • Mr. Murthy is the recipient of numerous awards and honors. • The Economist ranked him 8th in the list of the 15 most-admired global leaders in 2005. • He was ranked 28th among the world's most- respected business leaders by the Financial Times in 2005. • In 2004, TIME magazine identified him as one of the 10 global leaders who are helping shape the future of technology. • In 2006, TIME magazine voted him as one of the Asian heroes who have brought about revolutionary changes in Asia in the last 60 years.
  • 11. 11 • He was featured in Business Week's "The Stars of Asia" for three consecutive years - 1998, 1999 and 2000. • Mr. Murthy was voted the "World Entrepreneur of the Year" by Ernst & Young in 2003. • He was chosen as the "Business Process Innovator" by The Economist in 2007. • He was awarded the "Padma Vibhushan", the second highest civilian award by the Government of India in 2008. • The Government of France conferred the Officer of the Legion of Honor in 2008.
  • 12. 12 Lessons from N.R Murthy •. • Think Big. Don't Hesitate to Start small. In 1981, a determined Murthy started Infosys with Rs 10,000 he borrowed from his wife. In few years, Infosys went on to become one of the largest wealth creators in the country. • Treat your People Good, but Your Best Better. Murthy always had a thing for good performers. And he rewarded them well. When Infosys decided to give its employees stock options, Murthy insisted that some shares be given to good performers through the 'Chairman's quota.'
  • 13. 13 • Sharing is Caring. After the IPO, Infosys decided to share a portion of its equity with employees. This helped them retain talent and gave employees a sense of ownership. Murthy is proud of having given away stocks worth over Rs 50,000 crore to employees. • Talent Spotting and Division of Labour Murthy is known to have an eye for talent and a talent for dividing labor. Nandan was given sales responsibilities while Kris and Shibu did the tech stuff. N S Raghavan was asked to handle people and Dinesh was assigned quality.
  • 14. 14 • Hold on to Your People but don't stick. Letting go is never easy but its not good to cling on to your colleagues either. Amongst the founders, Ashok Arora, Nandan Nilekani and K Dinesh have quit Infosys. Infy veteran Mohandas Pai has also left Infosys. • You might fail, but get started Learn from mistakes and move on. In 1976, Murthy founded Softronics, a company that lasted a year and a half. When he realized that his first venture wasn't taking off, he moved on.
