They are now starting to create new life. Perhaps
this is the start of an era in which new biological
species are created based on a digital design
This new research field, which goes by the name of
synthetic biology, has been gaining ground over the
past years. It is a mixture of molecular biology,
chemistry, genetic engineering, biotechnology,
engineering and computer science. Boiled down, the
idea is to look at biology through engineer’s eyes
and to analyze life forms and life processes as
functional units taken from biosystems.

Visions of how synthetic organisms might be used
range from the creation of oil-free fuels and
chemical-free cancer therapies, to the establishment
of whole new landscapes. But scientists in the field
are currently most concerned with basic research,
and it is still unclear whether such plans will ever
become reality.

Scientists have been motivated by the falling costs of
decoding and synthesizing gene sections, and the
realization that although genome sequencing
generates huge quantities of genetic data, it doesn’t
offer much insight into the question of how genetic
information can be translated into “life,” and which
inter-cellular actions and interactions play which role
in the process.

Among the projects the team is involved in is the
development of new micro-organisms for the
synthesis of high-quality chemicals for industrial use.
The most popular result from Panke’s institute is the
award-winning “e-lemming,” a bacterium whose
movements can be remote controlled by light.
