Overview
• What is climate change
• What causes it
• What are its impacts
• Mitigation
• Adaptation
• Institutional development
• Recap
3. 3
What is Climate Change?
• Increase in frequency of extreme weather
events like: rainfall, droughts, floods,
tornados, tsunamis, hurricanes etc.
• Extreme changes in weather :
– Temperature
– Humidity
– Wind velocities and temperatures
• Extreme changes in climate - seasons
and seasonal calendar
4. 4
What causes Climate Change?
• Natural causes like
– Changes in solar activity
– Meteorites, volcanoes, earthquakes etc.
• Man made causes like
– Pollution
– Deforestation
– Loss of bio-diversity
– Unsustainable use of natural resources
– Global warming due to Green House Gas emission
– Reservoir induced earthquakes, water logging &
micro-climate change
5. 5
Pollution
• Water pollution - Ground water pollution
• Air pollution
• Soil pollution
• Untreated Municipal sewage and solid waste
• Untreated Industrial wastes
• Hazardous / Biomedical waste
• Vehicular emissions
• e waste
• Marine pollution
6. 6
What are the Impacts of
Climate Change?
• On geological features – glaciers, rivers, oceans
• On natural resources
– Loss of biodiversity – flora, fauna
• On humans
– Food security - production and productivity
– Water security – quantity, quality & sustainability
– Livelihoods security – coastal areas susceptible to floods
– Health – increased incidence of infectious diseases
– Shelter – inundation / destruction of shelters
• On aquatic flora & fauna
– Availability and sustainability
– Quality
7. 7
Impacts on the poor and vulnerable
• The most vulnerable groups susceptible to
the impacts of climate change would be:
– The poor
– People along the coast line and river banks
– Old people, children, women and the disabled
– Tribals and their habitat
– Areas susceptible to droughts and floods
– Food, Shelter and Livelihoods affected
8. 8
Mitigation strategies
• Reduce use of products emitting
– Green House Gases
– CFCs, PCBs etc.
– Aerosols
– Plastics
• Reduce discharge of pollutants into
– Water including oceans
– Air
– Soil
• Disaster management strategies
– Capacity building, mock drills, improved logistics,
equipment, technology for preparedness
10. 10
Adaptation Strategies
• Build peoples’ capacities to
– Adapt to extreme weather events
– Conserve water & energy, their quality & improve their
efficiency of use
– Adopt water saving appliances – dual flush cisterns,
quarter turn taps etc
– Adopt rain water harvesting, ground water recharging &
grey water recycling techniques
– Use energy efficient, BEE star rated electrical appliances
and to prevent wastage of energy
– Protect plantations along coastline & river banks
– Demand strict enforcement of environmental legislations
11. 11
Adaptation Strategies contd.
• Build institutions and their capacities
– Strengthen CPCB, APPCB, MoEF, Mpl. Corporations –
for effective enforcement of environmental legislations
– Utilize IT and GIS for effective enforcement
– Sustainable natural resources management
– Monitor deforestation, poaching and afforestation
– Consult people in framing legislation for protection of
forests and wildlife
– Preserve seeds and germ plasm etc.
– Use Environmentally sustainable technologies
– Adopt sustainable development strategies
Adaptation Strategies contd.
13. 13
Strengthen National and
International institutions
• Enhance institutional capacities to negotiate for complete
elimination of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons
• Forest and Wild life conservation
• Climate conventions to effectively enforce ban on
plastics, trade on endangered species, fossil fuels
• Regulation of Marine food exploitation to protect interests
of coastal communities
• foster coordination, synergies and networking among
nations, national & international institutions, NGOs etc.
• Build capacities of Councils, ward committees, RWAs,
CBOs to prepare people to cope with climate change
• Make Govt. initiatives to be driven by the people
• Make environmental education part of school curriculum
14. 14
Recap
• Climate changes may be devastating like severe
droughts and floods
• We need to formulate strategies to mitigate the
impact of climate change
• Build peoples’ capacities adapt to climate
change and to cope with it
• Build institutional capacities to protect the
environment to mitigate climate change
• Local, national and international environmental
organizations and NGOs to work with synergies
to mitigate climate change and its impacts
