Curricular Statement 
The pupil are made aware of the concept of negative and their subtraction 
through activities explanation and examples. 
Content Analysis 
Fact : Negative numbers are represented by ‘-‘ symbol 
Concept : Concept of subtraction of negative numbers 
Learning out comes : 
The pupil will be able to 
 Recognise negative numbers 
 Draw numbers line neatly 
 Perform subtraction of two negative numbers on a number line 
 Develop interest in negative numbers and their subtraction.
Pre requisites : 
Ntural numbers ,negative numbers 
Subtraction of two numbers. 
Teaching learning resources : 
Common classroom aids 
Students to perform activity 
Introduction : 
Teacher recalls about negative numbers and 
ask the students can you tell me what is 9-4 
So you are familer with the subtraction 
of positive numbers. 
Today ,we are going to learn the subtraction 
of negative numbers using number line and 
to teach this I need your help for an activity 
involving students to represent number line. 
Presentation: 
Teacher gives instruction about the activity 
Teacher draws the line using chalk on the 
ground and marks an approximate midpoint 
to do note Zero(0) on the numbers line 
Teacher calls two Students and ask them to 
stand at the Zero position.The side is 
negative side. 
Teacher asks to class to say a number and 
the student 1 and 2 are moment that amny 
steps to the left for –ve numbers and right for 
the numbers. 
Student say immediately 
‘5’ 
Students are ready for the activity 
Students volunteer and take their position.
Initial position 
0 Student 1 
Student 2 
Students say number(-5) to the left 
-5 0 
0 student 1 
Another students says 3 to the left (-3) 
Teacher asks what symbol should be given 
final position 
-2 
Student 1 0 3 0 
-5 Student 20 
Can you tell me how we can write this as 
a statement? 
Teacher appreciates 
From the movement of the students can you 
tell me difference in their position 
If they are in the left side what symbol 
should be used? 
Teacher appreciates and says we arrine at 
the answer 
Students moves 5 steps to the left 
Students moves 3 steps to the left 
Student says ‘ - ‘ Sympol 
Students say 
-5-(-3) 
2 steps 
Students say minus 
So answer is -2 
Students understand the subtraction
-5-(-3) = -5+3= -2 
We can also say - x - = + 
Application : (Eg:1) 
Teacher writes a question on the board 
-8-(-4) 
Teacher gives the solution on a number line 
-8 -7 -6 -5 - 4 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

Teacher gives the question and ask the 
student to final the answer

Content Analysis Fact : Negative numbers are represented by ‘-‘ symbol Concept : Concept of subtraction of negative numbers Learning out comes : The pupil will be able to  Recognise negative numbers  Draw numbers line neatly  Perform subtraction of two negative numbers on a number line  Develop interest in negative numbers and their subtraction.

Teaching learning resources : Common classroom aids Students to perform activity Introduction : Teacher recalls about negative numbers and ask the students can you tell me what is 9-4 So you are familer with the subtraction of positive numbers. Today ,we are going to learn the subtraction of negative numbers using number line and to teach this I need your help for an activity involving students to represent number line. Presentation: Teacher gives instruction about the activity Teacher draws the line using chalk on the ground and marks an approximate midpoint to do note Zero(0) on the numbers line Teacher calls two Students and ask them to stand at the Zero position.The side is negative side. Teacher asks to class to say a number and the student 1 and 2 are moment that amny steps to the left for –ve numbers and right for the numbers. Student say immediately ‘5’ Students are ready for the activity Students volunteer and take their position.
