Temperature Testing of Materials:
Six different materials were tested to determine the relative Thermal conductivity/insulation qualities of each
material. This was done to assess the materials quality and relate this to an architectural or product design
application eg (Cladding on a building). A small box was constructed to represent a scale model of a room in a
domestic or commercial building. Each material was subjected to a heat source via a series of lamps(Lamp
placed on the outside of the box and directed to the side of the material being tested and temperatures
recorded inside the box). The materials were all of similar size including thickness.

The materials chosen and their original cross sectional sizes were.

Polymer High density Polystyrene 265 x 150 x 1.6 mm
                        Polymethyl Methyl Acrylate (Acrylic) 265 x 150 x 1.3 mm

Metal Galvanised Sheet Steel 265 x 150 x 1.0 mm
                        Aluminium Sheet 265 x 150 x 1.0 mm

Timber Manufactured Board (Plywwod) 265 x 150 x 2.3 mm
                        Manufactured Board (MDF) 265 x 150 x 2.3 mm

Each piece was subjected to a continual light energy. Measurements were taken at various times throughout a
double period (1.5 hours) and recorded. Different materials were tested on different days.

Research Criteria Aspects
    1. Strategies: Outline your strategies of collecting the information on tensile testing. What
Materials, equipment procedure did you use?

    2. Data Collection: What are the primary and secondary data involved in this investigation.
(Describe in detail) Is this a quantitative or qualitative data collection? Is there any other way of
looking at the data? Display the findings of this research graphically in at least three different ways.

    3. Data Processing and Analysis: How is error or uncertainty part of data collection of this
nature? How reliable is your data? Analyse the findings of your research and state how this can
affect design work. Explain how this experiment can help you with your projects and your
understanding of materials. How are experiments of this nature done in industry? Explain….

Evaluation Criteria Aspects
         1. Conclusion

Evaluation against Specification

E The results of the testing or expert appraisal are interpreted to critically evaluate whether the product or products
    meet the specification.

m Take studio images of your project being used in situ. Preferably by the target market group.

T Testing of the project and evaluation against specification are used to determine whether the project addresses the
    brief/ research question successfully

         2. Procedure

Evaluating the Procedure

E Evidence of a comprehensive evaluation of the procedures at each stage of the project. The advantages of the
procedure, its limitations and weaknesses and their significance are commented on.

Also how strong or how significantly weak the solution appears in relation to the procedure of the project. What areas
needed more time or focus.

Improvements to the procedures are recommended with reference to the weaknesses and limitations identified in
Evaluating the Procedure.

         3. Recommendations

Recommendations to Project

R If improvements to the data collection are recommended, modifications should address issues of precision, accuracy
    and reproducibility of the results.

a The modifications proposed should be realistic and clearly described in detail. Modifications/ improvements to the
product or products are suggested and explained (relating to the Evaluation against Specification) and free hand
sketches, CAD and photographs of model are used to show possible changes graphically.
