3. PHYSIOGRAPHIC INTRODUCTION OF INDIA
⢠India is the 7th largest country in the world with an area of 32,87,263 sq.km.(2.4%
of the total geographical area on the Earth).
⢠India extends from the snow-covered himalayas in the north to the sun urst coastal
villages of the south and a very fertile land land in the brahmaputra valley in the
east to the desert in the westa
⢠It is situated entirely in the northern hemisphere.
⢠India has a land frontiear of 15,200 km and a coastline of 7,516 km.
5. THE NORTHERN PLAINS
ďą The northern planes has been formed by the interpley of the three major
river systems, The Indus,The Ganga and The Brahmaputra along along with
their tributaries.
ďą The plain is formed of alluvial soil. The deposition of the alluvium in a vast
basin lying of the foothills of the himalaya over a millions of years ,formed
this fertile plain.
6. THE DESERTS
ď§ Desert is a large,arid,sandy,infertile region.
ď§ India on its western side have got some deserts also like, THE GREAT
THAR DESERT.
ď§ The amount of rainfall in deserts is generally less.
7. PENINSULAR PLATEAU
⢠A body or piece of land enclosed on three sides by water, jutting out from a larger
body of land.
⢠The peninsular plateau of India was formed due to the breaking and drifting of the
Gondwana land.
⢠The peninsular plateau is flanked by Aravalliâs on The Northwest, The Western
Ghats in The west and The dissected Eastern Ghats in The East
⢠The peninsular plateau or Deccan trap is famous for black soils.
8. THE COASTAL PLAINS
ď§ Coastal plains are characterized by an area of flat, low lying land situated adjacent to a water
body often a sea or ocean.
ď§ The total coastal line of India is around 4500 km.
ď§ The great peninsular plateau is flanked by narrow coastal strips on both the western and the
eastern sides along the Arabian sea and the bay of Bengal respectively.they are known as
coastal plains
ď§ There are two coastal plains in India
a. Western coastal plains
b. Eastern coastal plains
9. THE ISLANDS
⢠An Island is any piece of sub-continental land that surrounded by water
⢠Very small islands such as emerged land features on atolls arsssse called
Islets.A key or cay is another name for a small Island or Islet.
⢠There are two island groups of India-
1. The Lakshadweep islands
2. The Andaman and Nicobar islands
10. CONCLUSIONS
The reason for studying geography in biology is that
,biology and geography are inter-related âwhere
there is land,mountain,water,island,plains or deserts-
in short geographical things, there is biodiversity and
they together makes the field of biogeography and in
zoology paticularly it is known as zoogeography.
