– Digital	Tourist	Guides	provide	vast	amount	of	information	in	a	compact	
form	BUT the	limited	size	of	smartphones’	display	causes	
inconveniences	for	information	display
– Traditional	maps	present	limited	information	
• Hypothesis
– A	uniting	approach	of	the	traditional	maps	with	mobile	applications	
will	combine	advantages	and	eliminate	the	disadvantages	of	both	
systems	and	provide	a	more	attractive	application	for	data	exploration

enough	light,	the	application	fails	to	recognize	the	
objects
– Requires	higher	battery	consumption,	which	can	be	a	
serious	problem	for	tourists
• Drawbacks
– 30%	of	users	think	it	is	unpractical	in	movement.
– 15%	lack	of	indication	that	a	map	can	be	augmented
– 35%	the	approach	is	slow	and	battery	consuming

location	to	another,	or	that	steps	in	to	explain	interesting	facts

– Most	of	the	respondents	found	the	presence	of	3D	models	of	
landmarks	interesting,	but	more	nice-to-have	attribute	than

easier	to	take	the	right	direction	but	it	
would	be	difficult	to	understand	the	
distance
– Respondents	were	interested	in	the

• Alternative	approaches	to	present	the	information
• Conduction	a	larger	survey	using	a	system	that	
provides	all	features,	in	several	tourist	attraction	points	
and	university	campus	in	Trento
– In	this	study	we	found	out	that	is	important	to	consider	
destinations	of	the	respondents	(home	country	/	other	
countries)	because	aspects	such	as	internet	can	be	better	
evaluated
• Extend	target	population	to	include	real	tourists	in	
Trento
