construction of sentences using the word ‫.כל‬

2. The word “‫"כל‬
 The word ‫כל‬ has a basic meaning of each or every
in English. However depending on the placement
of the word in a Hebrew sentence, it can have
many meanings. We will discuss these in this
lesson.
 The word ‫כל‬ is an adjective that describes quantity
for a noun. If the noun that is modified by this
adjective is singular and indefinite, the word ‫כל‬ will
have a meaning of “every”.
 ‫תפוח‬ ‫כל‬ every apple
 ‫פיל‬ ‫כל‬ every elephant

3. The word “‫"כל‬
 However if the word ‫כל‬ precedes a singular definite
noun, its meaning will change. In this case, it
expresses the idea of “the whole” in English.
 ‫התפוח‬ ‫כל‬ the whole apple
 ‫הפיל‬ ‫כל‬ the whole elephant
 Plural nouns are a different matter. When the word
‫כל‬ is followed by a plural definite noun, it will take
on the meaning of “all”
 ‫התפוחים‬ ‫כל‬ all the apples
 ‫הפילים‬ ‫כל‬ all the elephants
