2. Today we are living in an Information Society, of which information is
the core ingredient. If we need to survive as an information scientist in
this society, we should be acquainted with the current flow of
information. Conferences, seminars & workshops are those that can be
handful to cope up with the global challenge.
3. Generally we can say that conference, seminar and workshop are the
narrower sense of the term meeting, which means an occasion when
people come together to discuss or decide something. But they are
varied in nature. These are briefly described here;
Conference - A large official meeting, usually lasting for a few days, at
which people with the same work or interests come together to discuss
their views.
4. In an conference, papers are invited on a particular theme. After the
reception of the paper, the persons whose papers are accepted can take
part in the session. A keynote speaker is invited to make the attendees
lucrative.
Seminar – It is an educational event that feature one or more subject
matter experts delivering information primarily via lecture and
discussion.
Workshop - A period of discussion and practical work on a particular
subject, in which a group of people share their knowledge and
experience. This format often involves students practicing their new
skills during the event under the watchful eye of the instructor.
5. The goal of the conference is to bring together librarians, information
engineers, educators as well as experts and information professionals in
other related fields, from both national and international level. The
specific objectives of the conference are;
1. To create awareness on the latest development;
2. To explore the emerging technologies for delivering quality
services;
3. To offer an opportunity to put forth innovative ideas;
4. To strengthen the academic collaborations and strategic alliances;
5. To facilitate interaction with experts;
6. To identify and promote best practices;
7. To outline policies and professional strategies;
8. To inspire young men to accept leadership;
9. To provide semi-organized networking opportunities;
6. Since the Library Association was formed at a conference in London in
1877, it has staged an annual conference every year with the exception
of the years 1914 and 1940 to 1945. The International Federation of
Library Associations (IFLA) came into being at the 50th anniversary
conference of the LA, with ALA as one of the founding members.
The first conference whose title in anyway referred to “Information
Science” was the second international congress on information system
sciences at Hot Springs, Virginia, in 1962. This conference, was an
important step in identifying scholars from various disciplines with
common goals of understanding information and the sciences related
to it.
7. Library and Information Science comprise an interdisciplinary field
concerned with all phases of the information transfer process. The true
scope of LIS is as yet unclear since the discipline is really in its emergent
stage. Nevertheless, indications of the scope of LIS may be given by
enumerating the sub areas that have been addressed thus far:
Global Scenarios of Library Education & Practice
Information Literacy
E – Learning
Digital Content Management System
RFID and Smart Card
Digital Preservation
Digital Libraries
E – Resource Sharing
Knowledge Management
Open Sources Software & Library Applications
Open Access for Scholarly Contents
8. It is mentioned earlier, that the field of LIS is ever growing and ever
spreading. Now we will address some international conferences on
some adjacent areas of LIS:
a. Knowledge Management
b. Digital Library
c. Information Literacy
d. Library Education
9. Increasingly questions about the future of Knowledge Management
arise. The subject field is relatively defused and scattered into diverging
concepts, perspectives and disciplines. The following conferences will
explore the trends about the future of KM;

11. With the advent of the Internet, the past decades have seen a
burgeoning of Digital Libraries. Researchers, scholars, and
professionals have come to recognize the importance of digital libraries
and the convenience they might bring to the society. The following

13. Information Literacy is defined as the ability to know when there is a
need for information, to be able to identify, locate, evaluate, and
effectively use that information for the issue or problem at hand. In
order to throw light upon different aspects of information literacy the
following conferences are organized:

17. Conferences provide a rare opportunity to get a feel for who the people
in the field really are. They are therefore a great way to confirm that
your chosen career path is right for you. Other benefits of conferences
are;
1. Learn from others in your profession;
2. Easier it will be to give your own presentation one day;
3. Get a feel for what’s current in your field;
4. Get ideas for projects, papers and presentations;
5. You can get network;
6. In the process of this networking you will be branding your
business;
7. Developing opportunities for collaborations;
8. Enhancing access to key research;
9. Raising the international profile and public acceptance;
10. Ensuring continued growth;
18. A conference on a broad subject, is not a gathering of specialists all
having the same research interests. Much of the communication which
takes place in the conference, is necessarily more in the nature of the
imparting of information than the exchange of the latest ideas. A
participant should leave a conference knowing more and
understanding more than on arrival.
