1. Panchakarma procedures are generally not recommended for children according to Ayurvedic classics as children's tissues are not fully developed.
2. Snehana or oleation therapy and swedana or sweating therapy are considered safe and important preparatory procedures for children prior to panchakarma.
3. Among the five main panchakarma procedures, Basti or medicated enema is said to be the most suitable and beneficial for children for treating various pediatric diseases. The other procedures like Vamana, Virechana, Nasya and Raktamokshana may be considered only in emergency situations for children.

4. पूवमकर्म
Deepana and Pachana: Prior to panchakarma procedure
deepana and pachana should be done for obtaining in
niramavastha of doshas.
Snehana
A). Snehana is very important for the making of Dosha in soluble
state and by which they easily get fluidity, made easy removal of
Dosha from natural orifices .
B). In pediatrics cases the Abhyangam has great importanc. to
make the baby Snigdha as it helps myelination of the nervous tissue
because they are under the process of myelination
6. C). If internal Snehana is compulsion thenSnehana
Pravicharana should be used.

7. स्वेदन
- It is a process where sweating induced artificially by which it
relieves heaviness, stiffness and coldness of the body.
Types: Kashypa mentioned 8 types of swedana karma-
" हस्तस्वेद : प्रदेहश्च नाडीप्रस्तरसङ्करा |
उऩनाहोअवगाहश्च ऩररषेकस्तथाअष््म: "|| (का.सू.२३:२५-२६
--Hastha Sweda, and Pata Sweda are very useful in neonates
and infants especially in Pain abdomen.
9. Shashtika shali pinda Sweda
: This is the common method of swedana used in paediatric
patients in which specific part or whole body made to
perspire by the application of shashtika shali (a variety of
rice) in the form of pottalis (boluses tied in a cotton cloth).
10. वर्नकर्म
A.According to Acharya Kashyapa,
Vamana is contraindicated-- below the age of 6.
B.Children, especially during ऺीरान्नाद अवस्था vomit
spontaneously due to small aggrevation of Doshas. So,
generally they do not require forced vomiting.
The ideal drug for Vamana is Madanaphala.
Madanaphala and Pippali can be made into a paste and
applied on mother’s breast to induce Vaman in child if
required.
11. Indications
a) Gastric problems - ajeerna (indigestion)
b) Kasa (Cough),
c) Shwasa (bronchial Asthma)
d) Madhumeha (Diabetes),
e) Unmada (Schizophrenia),
13. ववरेचन कर्म
①It is the procedure where vitiated doshas (mainly pitta)
are eliminated from lower gastro-intestinal tract
through the anal route.
②ववरेचन कमम administers very cautiously in paediatric
patients because their chances of severe complication
like dehydration.
③Virechana in a child with Pittaja Rogas, has been also
indicated but suggested to avoid it as for as possible
reserve the same only in emergency conditions.
16. बस्स्ि कर्म
गुदा मागम या अऩत्य मागम से औषधध , क्वाथ , स्नेह ,
मांसरस एवं रक्ताहद द्रव्य प्रयोग करना बस्स्त कमम
कहऱाता है|
Among all therapeutic procedures, Basti is superior
because it is like amruta(acc. to kashapa) in child
patient and the most appropriate remedial measure
for vata dosha.
Basti is best indicated for the child and told that it
imparts Ārogya to the child
17. BASTI TYPES
These are: (as per Kashyapa)
१. Karma Basti -- 30 in number (6 Niruha, 24 Sneha)
२ . Kala Basti -- 15 in number (3 Niruha, 12 Sneha)
३. Yoga Basti -- 8 in number (3 Niruha, 5 Sneha)
४. Chturbhadra kalpa-12 in number (4 Sneha + 4 Niruha +
4 Sneha)
५. Commonly used Basti Yogas: Madhutailika vasti, bala
guduchyadi vasti, patolanimbadi vasti, vaitarana vasti,
mustadi yapana basti, tikta kshira basti.
23. शशरोववरेचन
काश्यऩ क
े अनुसार (का.भस.४)-
' नस्य कमामणी बाऱांना स्तनऩानां ववशेषतः |
कटुतैऱ प्रयुञ्जीत घृतं वा सैंधवास्न्वतम्' ||
Aacharya Kaśyapa also advices the Nasya for both child
and mother.
Nasya can be given in Bāla and it is of mainly two
types. (Acc.to kashyapa)
Brihmana
Karśana
24. * Śodhana and the Pūrana Nasya are the other two
varieties of Nasya explained.
*Katu Taila Nasya has been explained for children along
with Madhu and Gomūtra by making the baby sit on the
lap of mother.
Marsha Nasya Matra (dose)
A.Uttama matra ---- 10 drops
B.Madhyam matra---- 8 drops
C.Hraswa matra ---- 6 drops
D.Pratimarsha nasya---2 drops
26. Nav pinasa (acute rhinitis)
After blood letting
Immediately after taking food, water
Kas (cough),
Shwas (bronchial asthma)
Contraindications
27. रक्िर्ोक्षण
In our Shastra the methods of Rakta Mokshana as shriga,
jaluka, alabu and shira vyadha
Children have aparipakwa Dhatu so in first step this
procedure not indicated.
If disease is not cured by Shamana and other method then
RaktaMokshana is indicated as in Gudakutta, ajagallika
neelika, mukhapaka, charmadala.
The jalauka is the only mean forRaktavasechana in
pediatrics cases.
