3. Sustainability
• Sustainable development is development that meets the
needs of the present without compromising the needs of
future generations to meet their own needs (Brundtland
1987).
• Sustainable agriculture is a system that can evolve
indefinitely toward greater human utility, greater efficiency
of resource use and a balance with the environment which
is favourable to humans and most other species (Harwood
1990).
• Lack of a precise definition of the term 'sustainable
development' is not all bad. It has allowed a considerable
consensus to evolve in support of the idea that it is both
morally and economically wrong to treat the world as a
business in liquidation (Daly 1991).

4. Student’s Philosophy
We as a student understand that sustainability
means using the natural resources effectively and
efficiently taking in consider the future
generations. The resources should be used
properly and we should think of measures to
prevent misuse and recycle it.

5. Caesars Entertainment Corporation
• American public gaming corporation that
owns and operates over 50 casinos and hotels,
seven golf courses.
• Based in Paradise, Nevada, is the largest
gaming company in the world.
• Previously known as Harrah’s Entertainment
Inc. but was changed to Caesars
Entertainment Corporation.

6. Different Properties
• Caesars Palace is a luxury hotel and casino
located on the Las Vegas strip. It has 3960 rooms.
It also other hotels in Atlantic City and Detroit
(Caesars Entertainment and Slutz 2011).
• Bally’s hotel and casino located in Las Vegas and
Atlantic City which has a monopoly theme
(Independent Traveler and Atlantic City NJ).
• Harrah’s chain of hotels and casino has 16
luxurious hotels in the US.
• It has 8 casinos named Horseshoe spread around
US.

7. Sustainable Practices
• The group has a organization-wide, multi-year program called
CodeGreen which strategizes to indentify, monitor, measure, assess,
manage and reduce the material impacts on the environment.
• Started in 2007, reduced impacts related to energy, greenhouse gas
emissions, water and waste.
• 5-year progress:
• 9% less energy consumption.
• 11% less carbon emissions.
• 7% less water consumption.
• All the waste diverted to recycling.
• 24% waste recycled in 2012.
• Has won nearly 90 awards for its sustainable practices.

8. Life Cycle
• Launched CodeGreen program in 2005 and invested
$70 million to meet robust energy
conservation, carbon reduction, water usage and waste
reduction goals.
• Saved $24 million in resources, 298 million pounds
carbon dioxide emission averted and 208 million kW
hours in energy saved each year.
• CodeGreen Scorecard, launched in 2010 is a report
which specifies all the progress in the program
comparing with previous years which will help in reach
their goals through 2025.

9. Criticism
• Before 2005, the hotel was losing its profit.
• Around 20,000 staff were fired off the 90,000
staff.
• Gary Loveman took over the CEO post in 2003.
• Many measures were considered to cut cost.
• CodeGreen program launched in 2005 which was
very expensive but gave the group a good
reputation and saved a lot of money.

10. Positive Practices
• At Caesars every employee is trained to find new ways to cut costs
and help the environment.
• A facilities director in Indiana resort collects used cooking oil and
reuses it in fueling vehicles and heating a small warehouse.
• In San Diego, the general manager created a committee that
organized a team of management employees to replace
incandescent light-bulbs with CFLs, train HK staff to adjust room
temperatures to cut down on heat and AC costs. This led to
reduction of energy by 3.3 million kW hours per year.
• Harrah’s resort in California, partnered with Clean The World, an
organization which collects used soaps and shampoos, sterilizes
them and donates them to impoverished families. In 2012, 1195
pounds of hygiene products were collected by the resort staff.

11. Manager’s Role
• Motivate employees to be effective in in using any
resources.
• Should encourage every staff member to think of new
ideas.
• Pitch an effective idea to higher management so that it
can be implemented and staff should get credit for it.
• Make guests learn about the different measures the
hotel takes to be sustainable and encourage them to
do their part.
• Keep a detailed report of the resources and money
saved for future references.

12. Present Practices
• The hotels are using alternative energies like wind and
solar to some extent to reduce consumption.
• Water recycling plants are being installed so that water
from kitchen sewage can be recycled and used in
gardening or staff lavatories.
• All the waste is being sorted properly and disposed
according to their nature.
• Employees are being trained to use the resources in
the best way.
• Guests are being educated on the impacts they cause
to the nature during their stay in a hotel.

14. Organizational Growth
• Though expensive to implement, it increases
profit after a few years.
• The hotel gets recognition in the market.
• Attracts clients who wants to stay in green
hotel.
• Earns different awards which increases the
goodwill of the property.

• Improves profitability.
• Creates new jobs.
• Promotes growth within current and new
