A Executive Summary
Our planet is dying. With the steady increase in the consumption of non-renewable energy, our world will soon have to
come up with solutions and innovative ways to find alternative forms of energy. Humankind has been given charge to care
for and protect our world and its resources. We have been very responsible with those duties. If we don't come together
and begin to restore our resources and change the environment, the planet will not be here for our future generations.
With dedication and a little creativity, we would like to present The Ecopalooza Project.
The Ecopalooza Project is a non-profit organization with the mission to promote the use of technology and
science in the Portland Community through creative thought. Fundraising projects, such as a solar powered concert
event, is geared towards raising awareness of the necessity for clean energy. This event's proceeds will assist in
launching the project to integrate a local high school into a future eco-friendly environment. BEF’s Solar 4R Schools
program, Gunderson, and Pacific Power will match a portion of the revenue generated from ticket sales with the proceeds
going towards the installation. All additional revenue gained from each benefit concert will continue to the overall goal of
purchasing and strategically installing solar energy panels at numerous local high schools. The donors are not only
important to the implementation of solar panels, but they are also important in sustaining the Ecopalooza method and
movement. This change will set an example for other communities to go solar and preserve our climate and future. The
initial outreach is to pilot a High School in Oregon to install solar panels.
With this solar installation, the school will join a network of more than 150 school projects throughout the country. To date,
these solar arrays have combined to produce more than 4 million kilowatt hours of clean, renewable energy. The Solar 4R
Schools installations are designed to introduce solar energy into the curriculum, providing hands on life learning
opportunity for the staff and students. As a commitment to this project, the raised funds will also donate refurbished
computers to children throughout the piloted community.
Education and Equipment
There are two forms of solar energy. The first is solar thermal conversion, which uses sunlight to create heat and
then electrical power. The second is photovoltaic conversion, which uses sheets of special materials to create electricity
from the sun (Stone, 2011). Ecopoloza uses thermal conversion.
The Ecopalooza project is an environmental 501(c) (3) non-profit organization, with the vision of creating 100%
clean renewable energy solar powered classrooms. This sector was selected because of the growing need in America to
cut cost and to be environmentally friendly. The solar panels that Ecopalooza will donate are 1.2 photovoltaic solar panels
equipped with stock pv modules. These panels are manufactured by Schott and are high powered modules that contain
125mm square poly-crystal silicon cells with a13.1% module conversion efficiency. The panels are also cost efficient,
coming with a 25 year warranty on power output.
The infrastructure and the roof of the buildings where the classrooms are located will be constructed in such a
fashion that solar panels will prove to be extremely difficult to remove without the proper tools and nearly impossible to
operate without proper tutelage, so we will be holding workshops to instruct those in charge of maintenance. The first
option is we can arrange solar panels in a school’s gymnasium. The gymnasiums have a sturdy metal roof with no
structures that would obscure the sun’s energy. This also offers easy installation of the solar units. Due to these factors,
the gymnasium would be an ideal place to set up the solar panels. The second option would be the outbuildings located
on the perimeter of the school. Similarly to the gymnasium, the outbuilding offers easy installation, is in an open field with
no obscurations, and gives easy access to electrical connections.

Renewable energy isn’t the only thing that high schools will benefit from. Education is also a large benefit that will
come in forms of workshops, data analysis, data monitoring, and seminars. Currently we have created six divisions of
renewable energy education, a teacher training workshop, a student training workshop, follow up teacher support, a
teacher connection workshop, data monitoring, and tools for students. The teacher training workshop will be composed as
of a three hour training session that will go through the fundamentals of renewable energy via curricular activities. This
workshop is essential because it brings the concept of an unfamiliar topic into classrooms for a better understanding. We
will then further solidify this educational foundation with a student training workshop. This student training workshop will
feature a professional renewable energy educator conducting in class presentations on renewable energy to students.
These presentations could potentially be in the form of scientific experiments including experiments with solar cells and
wind powered renewable energy. The last workshop that we are considering is the teacher connection workshop. This
workshop will be a daylong workshop for teachers that are already active in the Solar 4R schools program. These
workshops will allow teachers to communicate, voice their opinions, and to help improve the already established
renewable energy program.
Case Statement
Current scientific data suggests that there has been a steady increase in the usage of oil and other non-
renewable energy over the last fifteen years. According to the United States Energy Information Administration, the world
has seen an increase in the consumption of petroleum from 70 million barrels per day in 1995 compared to 85 million
barrels per day in 2010. This along with atmospheric and climatic data suggests that oil burning has a detrimental effect
on the climate, producing hotter than usual summers and milder winters. These relatively hotter summers and warmer
winters contribute significantly to the production and occurrence of increasingly stronger convective storms that produce
hurricanes and tornadoes that cost countries billions of dollars annually. Hurricanes and tornadoes are not the only threat
to civilization. Global warming also comes as another threat. As the hole in our ozone layer grows due to the burning of
fossil fuels, more ice caps and glaciers in the poles will continue to melt, resulting in an increase of the sea level and
potentially leaving major cities like New Orleans and a great part of southern Florida under water. As a result of careful
analysis of this data, the Ecopalooza fundraiser mission consists of utilizing multiple aspects of science in order to
decrease oil consumption, the use of non-renewable resources, and forms of energy that ultimately may have a
detrimental effect on not only nature but also on climatic weather patterns and most importantly humanity.
Since the Ecopalooza Project is a non-profit environmental organization used for charity and scientific purposes, it
will be exempt from paying taxes and our tax status will be 501(c) (3). According to the IRS, the following are exempt in
section 501 (c)(3): charitable, religious, educational, scientific, literary, testing for public safety, fostering national or
international amateur sports competition, and preventing cruelty to children or animals (www.irs.gov). Also, according to
the Internal Revenue Service, before the Ecopalooza is recognized for an exemption, the organization must be organized
as a trust, a corporation, or an association. Because Ecopalooza is a group of persons banded together for a specific
purpose, we will be required to produce written documentation such as articles of association which shows Ecopalooza’s
creation. At least two people must sign the document. After completing this, the organization must complete and file Form
1023. We will also need an Employer Identification Number (EIN) in addition to financial statements and a detailed
breakdown of revenue and expenses. Through the revenue generated by the fundraising concert, Ecopalooza can provide
schools with several conveniences through the introduction of solar panels including one hundred percent clean energy to
power classrooms, computer systems to assist with the project, and the ability to sell renewable energy.
Goals and Objectives
As stated previously, the mission and goal of the Ecopalooza Project is to successfully implement an array of
solar panels to a local high school. This will allow us to reach our objective of introducing science and technology that will
surely be a huge part of future energy to school curriculum. This will do several things. It will provide hands on, real life
learning opportunities for staff and students, and it will encourage innovation from students and staff that will possibly be
used to better renewable energy. By offering hands on, real life experience, it is possible that science and math scores of
students will increase substantially.
Our partnership with Bonneville Environmental Foundation will allow the Ecopalooza project staff to bring the
solar4schools program to one of many culturally diverse and undeserved communities in Portland Oregon. Our objective
of introducing science and technology to culturally diverse student populations will surely include all students as part of
solution of developing the future energy.
The government tells us that we need to subsidize renewable energy providers with taxpayer money. Global
warming advocates tell us to turn to eco-friendly renewable energy sources like solar power. They insist that viable

alternatives to fossil fuels (like solar) are being ignored because the energy industry is resisting conversion to clean power
to protect profits -- at the expense of the planet (Bell, 2011). Well, this is the opportunity schools have been waiting for.
We are here to positively impact lives while creating a pay it forward ripple effect for a better tomorrow. By
adjusting our lifestyles, awareness and level of accountability to one another, we can restore our planet’s resources and
create a healthy humankind. We will introduce and use one of several forms of renewable energy in order to help power
schools. It will bring about an awareness of renewable energy to the mass public and it will provide additional educational
opportunities to students and teachers. As we navigate this project throughout the world, we will accept any person, group
or organization that is willing to be on board for the better tomorrow.
Executive Summary-Concert

We have a strong, enduring partnership with Bonneville Environmental Foundation’s S4RS program and are delighted to
install a new system at a Portland Public School through the generosity of Ecopalooza concert fundraiser. In addition, we
will donate computer systems to expand the computer lab of the selected school to monitor data to support all 30+
students in one room. Our target school will have a zip code of an underserved community.

Meet the Team:
Rah-Miel Mitchell is the Program Manager for Ecopalooza. As the program manger he is responsible for managing the
project development and communicating time lines to team members for both pre-production planning as well as the
production of Ecopalooza. As the founder of the non-profit, Rah-Miel has a passion for environmental sustainability and
promoting the use of clean technology, especially by example. Having worked in the Computer Technology Industry prior
to his involvement with The Ecopalooza Project, he saw the effects that electronic waste had on our environment and third
world countries. He saw this as an opportunity to not only benefit our environment, but to also work with local schools by
refurbishing the computers and then donating them. He believes the use of clean technology will make a difference in
protecting the environment for our future.
Schahram Rezai is the Marketing Manager for Ecopalooza. His marketing expertise will be utilized to maximize visitor
engagement at the event by identify marketing outreach strategies and designing specific collateral materials for
attendees. Born in Switzerland, Schahram grew up in a community which showed interest in sustainable effort in recent
decades. He developed a knack for understanding the social problems that entail individual lifestyles moving towards
sustainability and he is a true believer that corporate social responsibility will be the key to educate future generations.

PROCUREMENT PLAN
Project Management: BEF charges a fixed project management fee, based on project size.
Pass Through: BEF passes through all project hard costs directly to our funding partners with no markup. Hard costs
include any installation or contract labor, non-stock PV modules, PV inverters, balance of systems components, data
monitoring equipment, and any other related hardware. When available, BEF will also apply for and pass through any up-
front incentive payments (state, federal, or utility) to our partners. BEF works hard to negotiate educational or non-profit
discounts whenever possible.
Fixed: BEF sells internally developed services and products at a fixed rate posted on our products and pricing list.
Consulting: BEF charges a consulting rate for all activities that fall outside of the scope of services listed on the Products
and Pricing Guide.
