SUSTAINABLE
RESOURCE RECOVERY
SOLUTIONS
ONE OF THE GREATEST CHALLENGES TODAY
IN CONSERVING OUR ENVIRONMENT IS TO
’CLOSE THE LOOP’ ON RESOURCE USAGE.
SITA IS RE-DIRECTING THE PERCEPTION OF
WASTE TOWARDS RECOVERY AND REUSE SO
AS TO SUPPORT THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY.
4 COMPANY PROFILE
RECYCLING AND RESOURCE
RECOVERY
MATERIAL RECOVERY FOR
REUSE AND RECYCLING
SITA recovers numerous recyclable
materials from the waste collected,
including paper and cardboard,
plastics, glass, metals, timber,
batteries and electrical equipment.
ORGANICS RECOVERY FOR
COMPOSTING
SITA works in partnerships with local
councils and companies to achieve
optimum recovery of food and/or
garden organics. We are Australia's
largest processor of urban-generated
organics, producing quality fit-for-
purpose compost and mulch
products that meet customer needs
in specific applications all around the
country.
Our SITA Organics products
represent 'closed-loop’ resource
usage, returning carbon and
nutrients to Australia's agricultural
soils.
TONNES OF PLASTIC WAS
RECYCLED IN AUSTRALIA
FROM 2010-2011
ENERGY RECOVERY
Dry materials such as mixed plastics,
timbers and textiles can also be
recovered. These dry items have a
high level of embedded energy and
through our SITA-ResourceCo
Advanced Resource Recovery (ARRT)
facility are turned into alternative
fuels for use in existing power
stations or cement kilns.
The feedstock materials are sourced
from construction activities,
refurbishments and site fit-outs,
manufacturing facilities and other
pre-sorted waste streams.
DISPOSAL
While we aim to maximise the
volume of waste that is sent for
recycling and resource recovery,
when hazardous or non-hazardous
waste cannot be recovered, it must
be treated and disposed of under
acceptable environmental
conditions.
SITA owns and operates Australia’s
most highly engineered landfills.
Our landfill operations are carefully
designed to minimise the amount of
space used. This maximises the
operational lifetime of the landfill and
limit the environmental and social
impacts of landfilling.
Biogas produced as waste breaks
down is captured and used to
generate green electricity that is fed
into the power grid.
EDUCATING THE COMMUNITY
SITA provides quality education
resources to help our customers and
the community learn more about the
importance of sustainable resource
recovery.
This includes guided tours of our
facilities, school recycling, waste
education programs, waste audits,
technical forums to discuss
emerging issues, and tailored
programs to suit individual customer
needs.

(ARRT) FACILITIES
ARRTs offer a more sustainable, higher
order resource recovery solution than
waste disposal methods such as
conventional landfills, bioreactor
landfills and incineration. Using
specialist technologies, our facilities
recover and recycle valuable resources
back into the economy. Organics can be
composted for use in mine sites and
other rehabilitation projects to
replenish severely degraded soils, while
dry materials can be manufactured into
alternative fuels that replace fossil fuels
in our customers' industrial furnaces.
SITA owns and operates 7 ARRT
facilities around the country –
approximately half of all the ARRT
facilities in Australia.

ORGANIC RESOURCE
RECOVERY FACILITIES
SITA Organic Resource Recovery
Facilities are open-air composting
systems that only accept source-
separated organic material, such as
garden organics, liquid grease trap and
some commercial organic feedstocks,
including timber and sawdust.
These materials are processed into high
quality compost products for use in
agriculture, and public open spaces
such as sporting fields and park garden
beds, which improves the social
amenities of local communities. Other
quality composted products are used to
improve soil fertility and reduce the
environmental harm associated with
chemical fertiliser and pesticide usage
in vegetable, fruit and wine production.

COMPANY PROFILE 7
MATERIALS RECYCLING
FACILITIES (MRF)
A MRF is where collection vehicles
unload recyclable materials, such as
plastic containers, aluminium cans,
glass, paper and cardboard, that
have been collected from residential
or commercial premises. The
materials are manually and
mechanically sorted, baled and sent
as commodities to global markets.
RESOURCE RECOVERY
FACILITIES
A Resource Recovery Facility provides
a consolidation point for unsorted
material collected from residential or
commercial premises and public drop-
off facilities. Some resource recovery
takes place through segregation and/or
processing onsite.
Material that is unable to be processed
onsite is loaded into larger vehicles for
transportation to an ARRT, MRF or an
Organic Resource Recovery Facility.
Residual materials are transported to
landfill.
Often transfer stations start out as a
site for the temporary acceptance of
waste and, through the introduction of
sorting and processing techology,
become Resource Recovery Facilities.
ENGINEERED LANDFILLS
SITA recognises that landfills play
an important and necessary part in
managing Australia's waste. Even
ARRTs generate some residual waste
which must be disposed of safely.
Secure, engineered landfills are the
community’s best environmental
management option for waste that
cannot yet be recycled or reused. SITA
owns and operates Australia’s most
highly engineered solid waste landfills.
Biogas generated from organic waste
that breaks down at SITA’s landfills is
captured and converted into electricity.
Long-term care, through ongoing
monitoring of capped and closed
landfills, is an important part of SITA’s
commitment to environment
protection and rehabilitation programs.

TRANSFORMING
ORGANIC WASTE INTO
VALUABLE RESOURCES
WE DELIVER AN ENVIRONMENTALLY
RESPONSIBLE SOLUTION FOR THE MANAGEMENT
OF FOOD AND GARDEN ORGANICS, ENSURING
THAT NUTRIENTS ARE RETURNED TO THE EARTH
TO PROMOTE FUTURE PLANT GROWTH.
THE ARRTOF ORGANICS
®
SITA operates numerous large scale
composting facilities across Australia.
We are the largest processor of urban
generated food and garden organics,
producing around 500,000 tonnes of
high quality compost every year. Our
sites follow rigorous quality assurance
processes to ensure maximum product
quality.
The SITA Organics range of high-quality
organic composts, mulches and soil
conditioners offers a sustainable
alternative to chemical fertilisers for
application on sporting fields and park
garden beds; vegetable, fruit and wine
production; agricultural crops and
pasture; road and mine-site
rehabilitation; and home gardens.
Choosing sustainable products for
Australian soils reduces our impact on
the environment by:
• Naturally replenishing nutrients;
• Reducing water usage;
• Reducing dependence on chemical
fertilisers and pesticides;
• Conserving virgin soils; and
• Supporting 'closed-loop' solutions
that divert these valuable
resources from landfill.
SITA ORGANICS ARRT
PRODUCT RANGE
SITA Organics produces the following

10 COMPANY PROFILE
W
e are proud to be able to
provide environmental
solutions to support
communities, individuals,
businesses and councils in their
choice to live and operate
sustainably.
SITA is committed to improving
environmental and social outcomes
for our business, our customers and
the communities which we service.
CONSERVE NATURAL
RESOURCES AND ENGAGE IN
THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY
• Optimise recycling and recovery
rates
From the waste generated by our
customers, SITA strives to increase
the proportion which is reused,
recycled or recovered. The forms of
waste that cannot be converted into
resources are disposed of under
conditions that respect the
environment.
SITA not only provides environmental
services essential for the population's
well-being, we also manage natural
resources by re-introducing them into
the economy in the form of re-usable
materials and energy.
INNOVATE TO RESPOND TO
ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES
• Improve energy efficiency
through all operations
• Increase and promote
renewable energy generation
• Reduce the degradation of soils
Climate change and soil degradation
are two major environmental
challenges facing us today. As a
socially responsible company and a
leader in resource recovery, SITA
innovates to respond to these
environmental challenges.
Our landfills are equipped with
biogas capture systems and we are
constantly adding to the number of
our collection vehicles running on
alternative fuels (Soy Biodiesel and
CNG).
SITA also contributes to avoided
greenhouse gas emissions through
material recovery, organics recovery
and alternative fuel production.
The principal threats to which
Australian degraded soils are
exposed include erosion, reduction
in organic matter and soil structure.
Soil degradation can be reduced and
reversed through the use of
compost. Through constant
innovation, SITA contributes to
increasing the recovery of valuable
food and garden organics by
processing them into recycled
organic products for beneficial re-
use on Australia's depleted soils.

  • 8. S ITA provides innovative solutions for the collection, sorting, reuse/recycling, recovery, treatment and safe disposal of waste generated by our customers. COLLECTION AND SORTING DOMESTIC (MUNICIPAL) WASTE We provide reliable and cost effective collection services to suit the needs of local authorities, including unparalleled management tools for benchmarking, monitoring, cost control and environmental reporting. COMMERCIAL & INDUSTRIAL AND CONSTRUCTION & DEMOLITION WASTES We optimise sorting and recovery, create value and reduce the environmental impact of our customers by offering responsible, customised, sustainable and cost- effective waste management solutions. MEDICAL WASTE Our specialised business SITA-MediCollect offers a complete range of collection services. We are responsible and compliant with relevant legislation when handling and treating all clinical and related wastes. SUSTAINABLE RESOURCE RECOVERY SOLUTIONS ONE OF THE GREATEST CHALLENGES TODAY IN CONSERVING OUR ENVIRONMENT IS TO ’CLOSE THE LOOP’ ON RESOURCE USAGE. SITA IS RE-DIRECTING THE PERCEPTION OF WASTE TOWARDS RECOVERY AND REUSE SO AS TO SUPPORT THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY. 4 COMPANY PROFILE RECYCLING AND RESOURCE RECOVERY MATERIAL RECOVERY FOR REUSE AND RECYCLING SITA recovers numerous recyclable materials from the waste collected, including paper and cardboard, plastics, glass, metals, timber, batteries and electrical equipment. ORGANICS RECOVERY FOR COMPOSTING SITA works in partnerships with local councils and companies to achieve optimum recovery of food and/or garden organics. We are Australia's largest processor of urban-generated organics, producing quality fit-for- purpose compost and mulch products that meet customer needs in specific applications all around the country. Our SITA Organics products represent 'closed-loop’ resource usage, returning carbon and nutrients to Australia's agricultural soils. TONNES OF PLASTIC WAS RECYCLED IN AUSTRALIA FROM 2010-2011
  • 9. ENERGY RECOVERY Dry materials such as mixed plastics, timbers and textiles can also be recovered. These dry items have a high level of embedded energy and through our SITA-ResourceCo Advanced Resource Recovery (ARRT) facility are turned into alternative fuels for use in existing power stations or cement kilns. The feedstock materials are sourced from construction activities, refurbishments and site fit-outs, manufacturing facilities and other pre-sorted waste streams. DISPOSAL While we aim to maximise the volume of waste that is sent for recycling and resource recovery, when hazardous or non-hazardous waste cannot be recovered, it must be treated and disposed of under acceptable environmental conditions. SITA owns and operates Australia’s most highly engineered landfills. Our landfill operations are carefully designed to minimise the amount of space used. This maximises the operational lifetime of the landfill and limit the environmental and social impacts of landfilling. Biogas produced as waste breaks down is captured and used to generate green electricity that is fed into the power grid. EDUCATING THE COMMUNITY SITA provides quality education resources to help our customers and the community learn more about the importance of sustainable resource recovery. This includes guided tours of our facilities, school recycling, waste education programs, waste audits, technical forums to discuss emerging issues, and tailored programs to suit individual customer needs. Using specialist technologies, our facilities recover and recycle valuable resources back into the economy. Organics can be composted for use in mine sites and other rehabilitation projects to replenish severely degraded soils, while dry materials can be manufactured into alternative fuels that replace fossil fuels in our customers' industrial furnaces. SITA owns and operates 7 ARRT facilities around the country – approximately half of all the ARRT facilities in Australia. THE BROADEST NETWORK OF FACILITIES IN AUSTRALIA WE ARE LEADING THE CHANGE FROM TRADITIONAL WASTE DISPOSAL TO ECONOMICALLY SUSTAINABLE RESOURCE RECOVERY SOLUTIONS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH OUR CUSTOMERS. 6 COMPANY PROFILE ORGANIC RESOURCE RECOVERY FACILITIES SITA Organic Resource Recovery Facilities are open-air composting systems that only accept source- separated organic material, such as garden organics, liquid grease trap and some commercial organic feedstocks, including timber and sawdust. These materials are processed into high quality compost products for use in agriculture, and public open spaces such as sporting fields and park garden beds, which improves the social amenities of local communities. Other quality composted products are used to improve soil fertility and reduce the environmental harm associated with chemical fertiliser and pesticide usage in vegetable, fruit and wine production. • 11. SITA IS COMMITTED TO USING EFFECTIVE, EFFICIENT AND ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE WAYS TO RECYCLE AND RECOVER RESOURCES FROM ALL THE WASTE STREAMS GENERATED BY OUR CUSTOMERS. COMPANY PROFILE 7 MATERIALS RECYCLING FACILITIES (MRF) A MRF is where collection vehicles unload recyclable materials, such as plastic containers, aluminium cans, glass, paper and cardboard, that have been collected from residential or commercial premises. The materials are manually and mechanically sorted, baled and sent as commodities to global markets. RESOURCE RECOVERY FACILITIES A Resource Recovery Facility provides a consolidation point for unsorted material collected from residential or commercial premises and public drop- off facilities. Some resource recovery takes place through segregation and/or processing onsite. Material that is unable to be processed onsite is loaded into larger vehicles for transportation to an ARRT, MRF or an Organic Resource Recovery Facility. Residual materials are transported to landfill. Often transfer stations start out as a site for the temporary acceptance of waste and, through the introduction of sorting and processing techology, become Resource Recovery Facilities. ENGINEERED LANDFILLS SITA recognises that landfills play an important and necessary part in managing Australia's waste. Even ARRTs generate some residual waste which must be disposed of safely. Secure, engineered landfills are the community’s best environmental management option for waste that cannot yet be recycled or reused. SITA owns and operates Australia’s most highly engineered solid waste landfills. Biogas generated from organic waste that breaks down at SITA’s landfills is captured and converted into electricity. Long-term care, through ongoing monitoring of capped and closed landfills, is an important part of SITA’s commitment to environment protection and rehabilitation programs. • 14. 10 COMPANY PROFILE W e are proud to be able to provide environmental solutions to support communities, individuals, businesses and councils in their choice to live and operate sustainably. SITA is committed to improving environmental and social outcomes for our business, our customers and the communities which we service. CONSERVE NATURAL RESOURCES AND ENGAGE IN THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY • Optimise recycling and recovery rates From the waste generated by our customers, SITA strives to increase the proportion which is reused, recycled or recovered. The forms of waste that cannot be converted into resources are disposed of under conditions that respect the environment. SITA not only provides environmental services essential for the population's well-being, we also manage natural resources by re-introducing them into the economy in the form of re-usable materials and energy. INNOVATE TO RESPOND TO ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES • Improve energy efficiency through all operations • Increase and promote renewable energy generation • Reduce the degradation of soils Climate change and soil degradation are two major environmental challenges facing us today. As a socially responsible company and a leader in resource recovery, SITA innovates to respond to these environmental challenges. Our landfills are equipped with biogas capture systems and we are constantly adding to the number of our collection vehicles running on alternative fuels (Soy Biodiesel and CNG). SITA also contributes to avoided greenhouse gas emissions through material recovery, organics recovery and alternative fuel production. The principal threats to which Australian degraded soils are exposed include erosion, reduction in organic matter and soil structure. Soil degradation can be reduced and reversed through the use of compost. Through constant innovation, SITA contributes to increasing the recovery of valuable food and garden organics by processing them into recycled organic products for beneficial re- use on Australia's depleted soils. MAKING THE PLANET SUSTAINABLE IS THE BEST JOB ON EARTH PRESERVING THE ENVIRONMENT HAS NOW BECOME A MAJOR GLOBAL ISSUE.
