4. TRIGEMINAL NERVE
- It is the largest cranial nerve
- it the fifth cranial nerve
- It is a mixed cranial nerve :
Sensory Motor
Skin of the face 1-Muscle of mastication
2- Anterior belly of digastrics
3- Mylohyoid muscle
4- Tensor plataie & Tensor tympni

5. TRIGEMINAL NERVE COURSE
- Origin
Sensory root Motor root
From 3 nuclei
1-mesencapgalic
2-principal sensory

8. EPIDEMIOLOGY
In USA In Egypt
In 1968
- it was reported that 107 men &
200 women were diseased
- It was reported that 1 % of patient
with multiple sclerosis develops
trigeminal neuralgia
-From 2009 : 2013 total number of
patient is 32,285 of both sex
- But the high percentage is
present in female

9. EPIDEMIOLOGY (CONT.)
In 90 % o
patient the
decease occur
after the age of
40
Females are
affected up to
twice as often
as males range
( 3 :2 ).

16. TREATMENT (SURGICAL)
1- Microvascular decompression
- This can be done by removing blood vessels which
compress on the nerve

17. TREATMENT (SURGICAL)
2- Percutaneous balloon compression for
trigeminal neuralgia
- This pressure from the balloon damage the nerve & inhibits
it signals

18. TREATMENT (SURGICAL)
3- partial sensory rhizotomy
- This include part of trigeminal nerve is cut at
the base of the brain

19. TREATMENT (SURGICAL)
4-Gamma knife radiation
it is used for destruction tumor which may
