2. N o sooner had the car left to take its owner to his early morning tennis session that
a buggy rolled to a halt outside the house. The driver, a pale and sweaty man, peered
outside. He was blessed with a natural talent in looking like the kind of person you did
not want appearing outside your house, especially early in the morning. This was
fortunate for Kato, for it contributed to his successful career as legal summons
executive (recently promoted and now on overseas assignment).
Kato was not a morning person himself, but he had a long list of people to confront that
day. This town of plagiarists, copyright-violators, and inspiration-thugs slept late into
the day and was most likely to be at home at dawn. It was also a good idea to let the
young intern with him know that in this job, comforts such as a leisurely start to the day
did not exist. But there were compensations: for instance, the satisfaction of personally
delivering bad news to the doorsteps of reprobates.
âThis seems to be the house of âSingh, Sâ, said Kato, looking around. âYou got the
papers, kid?â
Aftab, the intern, nodded. He pulled out some papers from a cream envelope, and
appeared to be checking that he had everything. But he continued to fiddle with them,
unwilling to step out.
Kato had seen this before. One of the perils of seniority was being saddled with namby-
pambies, of having to âshow them the ropesâ. Such phrases always made Kato feel like
a master executioner. He found himself drifting into a daydream involving a pair of
gallows and some unknotted nooses, but snapped himself out of it. It was the heat, he
reminded himself. He longed for some tranquility instead of this noisy, sun-lit city.
âSee, kid, itâs just as they tell you in training. You walk up, you knock, you ask for the
guy â in this case, Mr. Singh. You serve him the papers. If he has any questions, you tell
him the answers are in them. If they press on, you point to the toll-free helpline
number. If they begin to sob, you simply walk back, without leaving yourself vulnerable
to an attack from the rear.â
Yeah, the agency had got it down to a business process.
âIâve heard other agents have had things thrown at them. Just last weekâŚâ
Kato cut in. âThat happens, yes. But these war stories are often exaggerated. Get going
kid, we got lots of other places to go to.â
3. He watched Aftab reluctantly pull himself out of the buggy, and drag himself down the
walkway past the gate, and to the front door. Kato looked at the print-out in his hand,
trying to figure out the route to the next villain in fake-town.
Even before he could finish, he heard footsteps and looked up to see a relieved Aftab.
âDone already? Good start, mister.â
âNo, noâ, said Aftab, trying to catch his breath. Heâs fled back, thought Kato. There
were no signs of blood, so perhaps whatever was thrown at him had missed its target.
âI couldnât deliver the notice â he wasnât there. Mr. Singh, I mean. Oh, heâs not Mr.
Singh. Gulzar sir has gone to play tennis. I mean he must be Mr. Singh, but heâs not
there.â
The scaffolds, the blindfolds, the last mealsâŚthe images came flooding back into Katoâs
head. The guillotines and electric chairs patiently awaited their turn.
âRubbish! What are you talking? â sober up, fella. Explain yourself.â
Aftab was a roly-poly law school graduate whose fifteen-plus years of formal education
had rendered him unskilled in presenting a cogent explanation of anything outside the
syllabus. Yet he tried.
âSir, what I am trying to say is like this. Gulzar sir lives in this house. I saw a photo of him
inside. In the living room, behind the person who answered the door. That person who
told me âsir is not there, he has gone for tennisâ.â
âSo where does Singh live?â
âNo, no, this is his house. I mean, I think his real name is Singh. Only he doesnât look like
a Sardar, if you know what I mean.â
Kato didnât, but let that pass.
âSo heâs the man, but he isnât there?â
Aftab nodded with gusto.
âHeâs gone to play tennis?â
Aftab repeated his previous performance.
4. âSays here on the papers heâs a chap in his seventies â plays tennis? Is he trying to pull a
fast one? Evasion tactics?â
âI am also surprised, sir. Most people here go for morning walks, but I have seen photos
of Gulzar sir, and he looks the fitness-type.â
They sat in silence for a bit. Agency rules meant that the notice had to be handed to the
recipient himself, unless circumstances were extenuating.
âHis name is Gulzar, you say.â
âYes sir. He is a famous celebrity â writes songs for films.â
âI know that, boy â everyone on this list is that kind of person. Gulzar, eh - any Russian
connection?â
âI think it means âgardenâ in Urdu. It must be a pen-name.â Aftab mused. âHeâs a poet,
and itâs a nice metaphor. But sir, Gulzar sir is a world-famous person â why are we
giving him a notice?â
Metaphors â that was the problem, thought Kato. People wandering about the garden
of words. Plucking flowers without permission and decorating their poems and prose.
All this in full view of the sign that said âdo not walk on the grassâ.
With the sigh of someone betraying a confidence, he whispered: âDo you know whom
weâre representing?â
âSome âLord Moonâ.â
ââLord Sasi Artemis Moon the Luminous (of Mahtab House), to give him his full title.
Perk up, Aftie boy, youâve been working for the moon himself.â
Aftabâs round eyes dramatically increased in diameter.
âThe moon? The planet? I mean, the satellite? Seriously? What sir, youâre pulling my
leg, isnât it?â
Kato shook his head.
âYouâre not joking, sir? I didnât even know he existed in human form. Well!â
Aftab sat in silence digesting this revelation.
âBut what problem does he have with Gulzar?â
5. âNot just with Singh, but many others. Not just here in Bombay, but in Hollywood, in
Moscow, in Tokyo. It was recently brought to the cognizance of the Lord that many
people on the mother planet have been using and misusing his name without
permission. Being a celestial and owning the legal rights to his name and image, he is
asserting his right to be fairly represented, and fairly compensated.â
Over the course of his legal schooling, Aftab had become aware of the moral
inadequacies of several members of his future profession. Clearly some smart-aleck,
perhaps from their own agency, had sniffed out this non-existent opportunity and
persuaded the poor celestial to hire them to go after some unassuming people.
âLetâs take your Mr. Czar, or Mr. Singh or whatever other alias heâs got.â He pulled out
the papers from the envelope in Aftabâs hands.
âSee here: in his case, these cases of copyright violation go as far as back as 1963. He
writes then (and Iâm quoting from the translation): ââŚthe Moon steals a glance after
parting the clouds. He smiles at my uneaseâ. Is Lord Moon some kind of Peeping Tom?
And here, your friend also wishes the moon should be confronted by an eclipse. How
rude â hoping for an eclipse is really the worst threat you could hurl at the Lord.â
âOh, come on! Youâre not serious?â
âHow would you feel if someone hoped your face would be blackened?â
âI didnât mean that. Are the original lyrics there too?â
Kato showed him the verses.
âWhat lovely lines!â exclaimed Aftab.
Kato frowned.
6. âTake this then. Writes he: âOur house will be where the road goes past the moon.â
Do you know the Moon is the master of seven planetary estates? He doesnât live in
some housing colony. Or this: âThe beggar-woman takes the moon as a begging bowl.â
What impertinence! Sometimes he talks about the Moon as a pillow, sometimes he
asks for the Moon to be caged and brought forth. One lady even gets rashes because
she tries to swallow his Lordship! Arenât there stories about a monkey-god trying to
catch the Sun? â you wait till Lord Sun sues the pants off the author for threatening
that.â
âMr. Kato, sir, with no disrespect, sir. You are taking this too literally. This is what poets
do â itâs called poetic licence.â
âHow did you pass law school, you nincompoop? Of course, Iâm taking this literally â
thatâs how the law functions. Unless you have a banana state here and a fruit salad for
the law book. This is slander, boy. Or is it libel? I donât know â I always get the two
mixed up. And what license, eh? I bet he has no papers to prove that. The Lord Moon
says heâs not given any such rights to anyone.â
Aftab looked unconvinced.
âOK Aftie, let me ask you something: how would you feel if someone used your name in
a story or a poem and then said they wish they could steal your light or distribute parts
of you around?â
âIâd feel flattered, sir. My aunt once wrote a poem about me on my birthday, but we had
this incident with the cake that dayâŚâ
âSpoken like a true pauper. People like Lord Moon, people far more important than
you, have a lot to lose â their image is everything to them. How would you know? You
donât see these poets using names of soaps or televisions in songs, do you?â
He looked at the advertising boards around them. âIs there a song referring to
Vodafone? Show me a song saying âI wish you were like Odomosâ. Or like, whatâs that,
Zandoo? You know why? Theyâd get sued like hell by these companies.â
âAarrghh!â said Aftab. He snatched the papers from Kato.
They sat in silence, glowering at the dashboard.
S ometime later, the silence gave way. Aftab had begun singing softly.
7. âWow, thatâs so niceâ, he said aloud. Then he pulled out another page.
âWhat does that mean?â asked Kato, breaking in.
Aftab turned to look at Kato, surprised.
âI am not very good at translation, but let me see. It is something like this: The night has
a bindi â what Indian ladies wear on their forehead, you know â so the bindi is the
moon.â
He scratched his head.
âItâs really hard to explain outside the full poem. OK, letâs take another line. Here, the
situation is that the heroine has had a fight with her husband. So she tells him, see,
these nights are without any taste; that without you, the moonâs golden light seems
false to me, it isnât the same anymore. So sir, according to me, Gulzar is only praising
the moonâs colour, no?â
Kato looked unimpressed. âThat may be so. But in another song he says âwe have taken
down the earrings of the Moonâ â the Moonâs security people feel it shows them in poor
light. And I agree. The moon is not the lawless place it used to be.â
âSir, we have a saying here, beg your pardon if you please sir. It says âthe monkey will
not know the taste of gingerâ. And before you go wild at me, sir, thatâs a metaphor and
itâs got nothing personal against you. Well, perhaps it does. But you seem to have no
heart, at least not one that isnât legal, sir, and you need a real heart to savour the taste
of poetry.â
At this, Kato made a sudden lunge at Aftab. The intern ducked, then opened the door,
dropped the papers and was about to make a dash for the open when he saw there was
another car parked in the drive way. It had not been there before.
Kato had seen the same thing, and he too had stopped in his tracks. He smiled and
gestured to the papers. Aftab picked them up and handed them over, while keeping his
distance.
8. âBut Iâm not coming with you, sir.â
âIâll show you how itâs done, softie-Aftie. And youâve got a lot to answer for. Once Iâm
back.â
Kato began walking up to the house. His swagger was purely for Aftabâs benefit.
A ftab watched as Kato went up the walkway to the door and rang with the zest of
someone home-delivering righteousness within 30 minutes. No sooner had the door
been answered that Katoâs mouth opened wide and far. Outside the gates, Aftab
watched the strut morph into a stutter. Having never been fond of Biology in school,
Aftabâs young brain had years ago egged him on to studying law. That had been a good
choice, for his brain was struggling to over-rule even the minor illusion that Katoâs eyes
had popped out from his sockets for a quick bounce-about.
His attention thus entangled, he missed the return of his supervisor. Katoâs face looked
like it had been freshly whitewashed.
âWhat happened, sir?â
Without a word, Kato got into the car. Aftab did the same. At some distance behind
them, the equally puzzled house door closed.
âI donât believe that!â said Kato after a while.
Aftab said nothing, preferring to wait for more information. It duly came after five
minutes.
âI donât believe that!â
âWhat do you not believe?â Despite wanting to, he didnât add the word âyou idiot'. But
the sentiment lingered in the air.
âHe looks the same! Heâs identical! That canât be. Thatâs not right, is it, Aftie?â
Aftab touched Katoâs forehead.
âYou donât have any temperature. I didnât see you take a drink. You couldnât have gone
mad in two minutes, could you?â
There was a frayed edge to Aftabâs voice.
9. âThere he was, at the door.â panted Kato. âThe exact same face. The silver hair. The
deep voice. Those white clothes â those starched-as-iron clothes. Even those bloody
Arabian-nights footwear, man, even those slip-ons.â
âSame as whom?â
âLord Moon, you madman, the Moon himself. How can that be? What kind of magic is
this? Pinch me, boy, sound the alarm, I want to wake up.â
Aftab didnât decline the invitation. He smacked Kato.
âDamnâ sobbed Kato, âIâm not in a dream.â
âOf course you arenât. Are youâre saying Gulzar sir looks like the Moon? Our client?â
âIâve seen photos of him, the Moon. I know what Iâm saying. It sounds ridiculous, I know.
Are they twins or something? Thatâs crazy, really crazy.â
âThat reminds me of some movie Iâve seen.â
âWhat?â
âNothing.â
âWhat do I do? I must be mistaken. I must have hallucinated. I should go again.â He
made an attempt to get out but his hands were shivering.
Aftab looked around, trying to see if he could spot some kind of TV camera. In the
meanwhile, Kato had begun whimpering. A policeman at the far end of the road looked
briefly at the car.
Aftab turned to his co-passenger.
âI think you need something strong, something stiff. Have you ever had a cutting here,
sir?â
Kato shook his head.
âIt will do you a lot of good. There must be a stall nearby.â
âWhat after that? I donât know what to do next. Suppose I go to the next guy and he
also looks white and silvery? The agency will think Iâve gone nuts. Iâve never defaulted
before.â
10. âLet that be. Whoâs on your list next? Whereâs the list?â
Kato did as ordered. âItâs someone called âSameerâ.â
âSameer? Great - letâs go there. Iâve never really liked his lyrics. Thatâll cheer us both
up.â
The intern fixed Kato with a newly acquired intensity.
âLet me drive.â he commanded.
The buggy sped off just as the poet Gulzar began sipping his morning tea in the house
nearby.
