4. Introduction
The word “women social activists” has actually got a broad concept lying
behind it.
Specifically it can be said that women who actively takes part in activities
that are intended to achieve social change are called women social activists.
They strive throughout the years for the betterment and development of
society.
They have raised voice for social evils like female foeticide, dowry, child
marriage, exploitation of women, castism, racism, etc.
Even they do work for social cause like floods, natural disasters ,to create
awareness about certain diseases and stop spreading it.
5. History
The first feminist document was Mary Wollstonecraft's Vindication of the
Rights of Women (1792).
Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Coffin Mott, Susan Brownwell are prominent
names in early social women activists.
Some women social activists work not only for uplifting the standards of living
of men and women but also the animals, birds and heritage buildings of
nation.
6. Indian Women Social Activists
The concept of Indian women activists has its roots in the 19th and 20th
centuries, when women education was in its full swing in India.
Then social reforms groups such as Arya Samaj, Brahmo Samaj, Prarthana
Samaj and others encouraged women participation in social and religious
issues.
With changing times the contribution of women activists became more
important .
India has produced many influential and strong women activists like Indira
Gandhi ,Sudha Murty, Arundhati Roy, Mallika Sarabhai, Aruna Roy, Kiran Bedi,
etc.
Apart from these there is long list of such women activists who continue to
motivate innumerable Indian women.
7. Sudha Murthy
Sudha Murthy is an Indian social worker and
author.
She began her professional career as a
computer scientist and engineer. She is the
chairperson of the Infosys Foundation and a
member of public health care initiatives of the
Gates Foundation.
She has founded several orphanages,
participated in rural development efforts,
supported the movement to provide all
Karnataka government schools with computer
and library facilities.
8. Murthy is a prolific fiction author in Kannada and English. She has published
several books, that espouse her philosophical views on charity, hospitality
and self-realization .
The wide range of Sudha Murthy’s social work covers the sectors of
healthcare, education, empowerment of women, public hygiene, art and
culture, and poverty alleviation at the grassroots level.
Infosys Foundation is a public charitable trust founded in 1996 and Mrs.
Sudha Murthy is one of the trustees. Through Foundation she has built 2,300
houses in the flood affected areas. She has handled national natural disasters
like tsunami in Tamil Nadu and Andaman, earthquake in Kutch – Gujarat,
floods in Orissa, Andhra Pradesh.
9. Kiran Bedi
Kiran Bedi is an Indian social activist and a
retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer.
Bedi joined the police service in 1972 and
became the first woman officer in the IPS. Bedi
held the post of Director General at the Bureau
of Police Research and Development before she
voluntarily retired from the IPS in December
2007.
10. She has also founded two NGOs in India: the Navjyoti Delhi Police Foundation
for welfare and the India Vision Foundation for prison reformation, drug
abuse prevention and child welfare in 1994.
In early December 2010, Bedi and others formed India Against Corruption (or
"Bhrashtachar ke Virudh Janyudh") as a way of receiving public support and
input on the group's alternate Lokpal Bill.

11. Mallika Sarabhai
Mallika Sarabhai (born 9 May 1954) is an
activist and Indian classical dancer from
Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India.
Daughter of a classical dancer Mrinalini
Sarabhai and renowned space scientist Vikram
Sarabhai, Mallika is an accomplished Kuchipudi
and Bharatanatyam dancer
12. As well as a dancer, She is a social activist. She, along with her mother,
manages the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts located at Ahmedabad.
Always an activist for societal education and women’s empowerment, Mallika
began using her work for change. Mallika has created numerous stage
productions which have raised awareness, highlighted crucial issues and
advocated change, several of which productions have toured internationally
as well as throughout India.
13. Saina Nehwal
Saina Nehwal ( born 17 March 1990 in
Dhindar, Hisar district, Haryana) is an
Indian badminton player who attained a
career best ranking of 2 in December
2010 by Badminton World Federation.
She is the first Indian to win a medal in
Badminton at the Olympics. She
achieved this feat by winning the Bronze
medal at the London Olympics 2012 on 4
August 2012.
14. She is the first Indian to win the World Junior Badminton Championships and
was also the first Indian to win a Super Series tournament, by clinching the
Indonesia Open on 21 June 2009.

Women activists have found ways to participate in social movements.
They establish organizations, go for awareness programs, write documentaries
and even now a days social media has played important role in such activities.
Many of them like Kim Shamoun, Stefanie Grey have undertaken activities
through social media.
