    Ideas from last meeting
   A) Establish Formal Learning Outcomes
        Institutional: Imagination, Professionalism, Preparedness
        Program Specific: Set by program with outside advising
   B) Improve Support Structures
        Assessment, planning, multiple student models, new learning
        models, permanent curriculum committee, increase
        interdisciplinarity, improve faculty conditions, define long-
        term eLearning strategy
   C) Update Program Curriculums/Consider New Programs
        Consistent/robust course descriptions, assess currency, better
        integrate liberal arts, industry advisory boards, evaluate
        program mix

   The Essential Character of Making Things
      Craft, concept and thinking are synthesized in the act of making
      Thoughtfully working with our hands is a creative act
      The shops must be integrated into curriculum
      Shops should evolve to incorporate mechanical engineering,
      electronics, software, media, and DIY culture
   Deep Quality
      Move from surface quality to highly refined realizations of
      powerful ideas
      Focus on criticality, research, strategy, systems design, invention,
      risk taking, and strong conceptual development
      Graduate programs should influence undergrad

      excellence in art and design and a socially responsible mission
      Explore local and global communities
      Engage in lively discourse with art and design communities

   Making for Emerging Mediums
      Technology and cultural changes catalyze new mediums that
      must be incorporated into curriculums
      Research and invention of new approaches should be integral
      to the academic life of ACCD
      Teach adaptability to new constraints, opportunities, skills and
      concepts
      Embrace risk taking
   Constant Innovation in Programs
      Culture must support constant change in curriculum
      Potential new degrees: Interactive Design, Design Research,
      Sustainable Design, Pro-Social Design, Theory & Criticism

   Fluid Curriculum
      Increase opportunities for students and faculty to cross disciplines
      Open up interdisciplinary degree opportunities
      Decrease required credits, offer more electives
      Offer a range of curriculum models for students
        High School Grad - Additional terms for liberal arts, dorms,
        develop maturity & work habits, traditional academic calendar
        Professional - Faster track, good credit transfer policy
        Foreign - Full ESL support, dorms, intensive acclimation term
        Graduate - Early transfer from undergrad, low-residency option

   Align admissions with curriculum & values
      Revise admissions criteria and methods
      Increase quality, preparedness, diversity, and fit to curriculum
      Increase dialog between admissions and programs
      Raise scholarship levels (duh!)
      Get branding, marketing, catalog and website right
   Life-Long Learning
      Educate our students to have life-long learning skills
      Integrate self-study “labs” into curriculum as requirement
      Create eLearning Center with physical and online presence

   Outcomes Based Education
      Accreditation, field complexity, and educational excellence
      Clear, frequently updated, and published learning outcomes
      Curriculum and pedagogy must be aligned with outcomes
      Assessment must be formal and regular
   Teaching Excellence
      Improve faculty respect, security & community
      Establish faculty development initiatives - teaching & learning
      models, new pedagogical methods, collaborative teaching,
      advanced skills & technologies, etc.
      Formal faculty involvement with decision making - governance

3) Conclusions

    Art Center Has a Tremendous Opportunity
   Be ambitious and establish a leadership position in
   advanced art/design education for the next 25 years
   An imperative to engage in R&D to create curriculums
   for the future
   May require rethinking entire curriculums
   Integrate faculty fully into curriculum development
   Will take time, experimentation, collaboration and
   perseverance
   Keep the dialog going

  • 7. © 2010 Art Center College of Design CURRICULUM & PEDAGOGY 2) Values We advocate these new or renewed values: Fluid Curriculum Increase opportunities for students and faculty to cross disciplines Open up interdisciplinary degree opportunities Decrease required credits, offer more electives Offer a range of curriculum models for students High School Grad - Additional terms for liberal arts, dorms, develop maturity & work habits, traditional academic calendar Professional - Faster track, good credit transfer policy Foreign - Full ESL support, dorms, intensive acclimation term Graduate - Early transfer from undergrad, low-residency option

Get branding, marketing, catalog and website right Life-Long Learning Educate our students to have life-long learning skills Integrate self-study “labs” into curriculum as requirement Create eLearning Center with physical and online presence
  • 9. © 2010 Art Center College of Design CURRICULUM & PEDAGOGY 2) Values We advocate these new or renewed values: Outcomes Based Education Accreditation, field complexity, and educational excellence Clear, frequently updated, and published learning outcomes Curriculum and pedagogy must be aligned with outcomes Assessment must be formal and regular Teaching Excellence Improve faculty respect, security & community Establish faculty development initiatives - teaching & learning models, new pedagogical methods, collaborative teaching, advanced skills & technologies, etc. Formal faculty involvement with decision making - governance
  • 10. © 2010 Art Center College of Design CURRICULUM & PEDAGOGY 3) Conclusions Art Center Has a Tremendous Opportunity Be ambitious and establish a leadership position in advanced art/design education for the next 25 years An imperative to engage in R&D to create curriculums for the future May require rethinking entire curriculums Integrate faculty fully into curriculum development Will take time, experimentation, collaboration and perseverance Keep the dialog going
