2. CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION
CHAPTER II STUDY LIBRARY
CHAPTER III RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
3. 1.1 BACKGROUND
The process of learning in the classroom about increasing the
activity of the students especially in mathematics learning.
In teaching and learning activities, the method is required by the
teacher. Approach to learning and implementing strategies or tips
as well as methods of learning approaches including the factors
that helped determine the level of efficiency and success of
student learning.
That makes the math student is considered a difficult subject is the
language used by the teacher. In this course students are more
familiar with the language of their peers rather than a language
teacher.
4. 1.2 Research Question
The formulation of the problem is taken in this paper are as
follows:
How Peer Tutor application of methods that can improve
student learning activity?
How Peer Tutor application of methods that can improve
student learning outcomes?
5. 1.3 Research Objectives
The purpose of this study are as follows:
To find out how the Peer Tutor application of methods that
can improve student learning activities.
To find out how the Peer Tutor application of methods that
can improve student learning outcomes
6. 1.4 Benefit of Research
Expected benefits from implementation of this study can be stated as
follows:
For Students
With the learning process that uses his own friends as a tutor will
provide a free opportunity for students to ask, transfer and absorb the
subject matter so that it can help students to master the subject matter.
For Teachers
For consideration in the selection of strategies / learning models so
that appropriate mathematics learning objectives achieved.
For Researchers
Through this study the researchers gained insight and experience in
designing and implementing learning by making use of peer tutors.
7. 1.5 Term Limits
Peer tutors are students one or more designated and assigned to
assist specific students who have difficulty learning (Surya,
1984: 112).
Learning outcomes are the capabilities of the student after he
received a learning experience (Sudjana, 2009:22).
8. 1.6 Research Study Limitation
In order for this research focus and research objectives
achieved, the problems in the study was limited to studies
conducted in class VII Bengkulu City Junior High School 14
School Year 2012/2013
9. 2.1 The Nature of Teaching and Learning
The essence of learning is an activity that expect changes in
behavior on individual self-learners.
M. Ali (1987:14) that in general, learning can be defined
as a process of change in behavior due to interaction
with the environment.
Ahmadi (2004:128) that reveals the process of learning
is an individual effort to acquire a new behavior changes
as a whole as a result of the individual's own experience
in the interaction with the environment.
10. 2.2 Learning with a Peer Tutor Methods
1. Peer tutoring is one method of learning which is a peer tutor or
some person designated and assigned to assist specific students
who have difficulty learning.
2. Student selected as the tutor should be considered in terms of
capability in mastering the material and the ability to help
others. This means that tutors are students who belong to both
academic achievement and have good social relationships with
peers.
3. Peer tutors are known to learning among peers or students, it
can happen when students are better able to complete his own
work and help other students who are less fortunate.
11. 2.3 Role and Benefits of Learning
with a Peer Tutor Methods
A. The Role of Peer Tutors in Learning
Here, the role of students designated as a tutor to help his friends
in solving math problems. Peer tutor acts as a substitute teacher and
teacher here only act as a supervisor.
The criteria that must be considered in selecting a tutor, namely:
1. Tutors can be accepted or approved by the students who will be
assisted so that students do not have any fear or reluctance to ask.
2. Tutor can explain the material to be taught to his friends.
3. Tutors are not snobby, cruel or hard-hearted towards their peers.
4. Tutor has enough creativity to provide guidance, which may explain
the lesson to his friends.
12. B. Benefits of Learning
As for the benefits of learning with Tutor Peer method is
as follows:
1. Train students to work together, tolerance, respect others
and develop skills of students.
2. Exercising leadership, discipline and responsibility.
3. To encourage student learning.
4. Generating courage students to convey their opinions and
the difficulties faced by others.
13. 2.4 Application of Method of Peer Tutor in Learning
Tutorial method is given with the help of tutors. The
teacher pointed to a few students to become tutors.
Teachers provide instructional materials to students
who became tutor, then tutor students who are required to
study these materials.
Peer Tutor learning this on its implementation by
dividing the class in small groups. Teachers formed a group in
which each group was given a tutor who has been determined.
14. 2.5 Learning Outcomes
Learning outcomes the main yardstick to determine the
success of one's learning. A person who is a high performance can be
said that he had succeeded in learning.
So, The study is a proof of one's success in learning the
lessons in school are expressed in terms of the values obtained from
the evaluation. Learning outcomes in this study tests the students are
given teaching with peer tutorial method.

16. 3.1 Types of Research
This type of study is a Class Action Research (PTK).
Suhardjono and Arikunto (2009: 57) argues that the PTK is a
study conducted by the teacher, in collaboration by researchers
in the classroom or at school where he taught with emphasis
and refinement or improvement of processes and practical
learning.
17. 3.2 Research Subject
The subjects of this study is a class VII student
Bengkulu City Junior High School 14 School Year
2012/2013
18. 3.3 Factors Investigated
Factors that will be examined in this study are:
1. Learning outcomes of students after the implemented
learning with peer tutoring methods.
2. Active students in the learning process by the method
of peer tutor.
19. 3.4 Place and Time Studies
The study was conducted in a class action class VII
Junior High School 14 City that Bengkulu on the road Zainul
Arifin Bengkulu on the second semester of the school year
2012/2013.
20. 3.5 Procedure of Research
A. Early Reflection
Before taking action, the researchers first observed at
the beginning of class VII SMP N 14 the city of Bengkulu.
B. Preparation of Action
There are three alternative actions that can be given to
tutors, among others:
1. Tutors are asked to learn their own perspectives.
2. Tutor obtain direct guidance from the teacher (researcher) of the material
to be taught.
3. In addition to the direct guidance of the tutor teacher (researcher), tutor
also provided worksheets to facilitate tutors in understanding the
material and can be used for the tutor to explain the material on
participants tutorials.

22. 3.6 Assessment Instrument
A. Observation Sheet
Observation sheet used to obtain data to evaluate teaching
and learning methods Peer Tutor of the student activity sheets
are used to observe the activity of students during the learning
process in every cycle.
B. Learning Test Result
The test is a method or procedure used in the context of
educational measurement and research in the field.
23. 3.7 Data Analysis Techniques
1. Observation Sheet
Data obtained from observations by teacher observation
sheet used be analyzed using a score of observation as in the
following table:
Category Notation Score
Less L 1
Enough E 2
Good G 3
24. 3.7 Data Analysis Techniques
2. Test
Data were analyzed using the average value of the class, absorptive
capacity of student and exhaustiveness learn classical.
1. The average value of the class
2. Exhaustiveness classical learning
25. 3.8 Indicators of Success Measures
The indicator of the success of the action as follows:
1. Indicators of success measures for student learning activities. If
the observations of the student activity each cycle with an
average score of the observer is the criterion score on.
2. Indicators of success measures for student learning outcomes. If
the average value of all the students increased in every cycle
and achieve completeness and the percentage of classical
learning .
