3. WHAT IS
PTSD?
PTSD is an acronym for post traumatic stress disorder
“Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric disorder
that can occur in people who have experienced or witnessed a
traumatic event such as a natural disaster, a serious accident,
a terrorist act, war/combat, rape or other violent personal
assault.”
“PTSD has been known by many names in the past, such as
“shell shock” during the years of World War I and “combat
fatigue” after World War II. But PTSD does not just happen to
combat veterans. PTSD can occur in all people, in people of
any ethnicity, nationality or culture, and any age. PTSD affects
approximately 3.5 percent of U.S. adults, and an estimated
one in 11 people will be diagnosed PTSD in their lifetime.
Women are twice as likely as men to have PTSD.”
4. SYMPTOMS ASSOCIATED WITH PTSD

irritability, hostility,
hypervigilance, self-
destructive behavior, or
social isolation
Psychological: flashback,
fear, severe anxiety, or

6. HACKSAW RIDGE
William Thomas Doss(left) is the
father of Desmond Doss who the
film Hacksaw Ridge is based around.
William Doss had Post Traumatic
Stress Disorder after seeing battle in
World War I. It is evident throughout
the film and William compensated
for his PTSD by drinking alcohol as a
means of escaping his own thoughts.
8. William Thomas
Doss
Mr. William Doss served in World War 1 and
received a Silver Star. “The Silver Star Medal is
the United States Armed Forces's third-highest
personal decoration for valor in combat. The
Silver Star Medal is awarded primarily to
members of the United States Armed Forces for
gallantry in action against an enemy of the
United States.” One of the main causes of PTSD
is after experiencing severe traumatic events
that are found in war related zones in which
William Doss was exposed to.
