8. Dr. Spencer
Reid
One of the characters that stands out in this tv show is Dr.
Spencer Reid. Reid has the special skill to recall images he see's
and books that he reads in great detail after only seeing them
for a few minutes. This is known as a eidetic memory.
This special gift allows reid to use his brain like an internet
search engine to gather information quickly and efficiently
to help the BAU decode the puzzles in many criminal's minds.
Reids eidetic memory gives him the ability to remember
specific details that most people forget and is often confused as
a photogenic memory which is corrected by him in several
episodes.
9. ExamplesSeason 1 Episode 5
• Reid is at a desk with a person involved in a crime investigation in which he is given a book. Reid
begins to skim his finger down each page and flips through each page within a matter of seconds.
The man watching reid stops and asks"Excuse me, can you actually read that fast?" In which Reid
replys with "Our conscious minds can process 16 bits of information per second, our unconscouse
minds however, can process 11 million." In return the man gives him a blank stare and Reid
proceeds with " Yes, I can actually read this fast."
Season 2 Episode 4
• Reid recalls a poem that hes heard before which relates to a crime. Agent morgan says "I thought
you had a photogenic memory" in which reid corrects him by saying "Eidetic memory, and that's
primarily related to things I read."
Season 4 Episode 8
• Reid connects a series of missing women by figuring out the connection was through the
fibonocci sequence. 1 woman then 2 women then 3 women then 5 women taken from separate
locations. Each number added with the one before it equals the next number. Which
geometrically is a logarithmic spriral which is found to be a pendant that the suspect had
around his neck and turns out to be the key to where the victims were held.
