2. What is Journal Zone?
But I just like it
because my work is better!
My teacher says that Journal Zone is:
An online journal which supports reflective thinking
through
• cognitive scaffolding
•Sentence starters for goal-setting, planning,
reflecting
• collaboration
•students comment on the journal entries of others
•they take responsibility for all projects
• multiple representations of knowledge
•students use text, graphics, animations to represent
their ideas
3. Why Use It?
We use these journals to ‘think about’ our
learning
- our goals, strategies, and plans.
Through writing about what we are studying
we become better learners.
Reading and participating in other students’
journals helps us all.
4. Console
The Console is the main working area where we view
and participate in various journals.
Journals have many pages. Each has three sections.
5. Getting Started
A teacher sets up projects using web-based administration
tools by:
• organizing an overall project theme & group topics
• dividing students into project groups
• setting various preferences for the project
6. Getting Started
Journal Zone
software connects to
LCSI’s server
All the journal pages are
saved on the server and
are available to other
students
7. Logging in
To login, I type my
name and password and
click OK (thumbs up!)
8. Navigator
The Navigator appears
showing the projects to
which I have access.
When I click on the project
I want, the groups and group
members are displayed.
There’s my journal - in bright blue!
9. Journal Entries Ok… so now I need to
think about just exactly
what I want to study.
My teacher says I am
to come up with a
‘driving question’.
Maybe these Journal
Starters will help me to
get started.
I’ll work hard but I
hope the other kids will
help me out.
10. Commenting Ok! I have read his journal
entry. I have some ideas!
I used to struggle with
getting started too.
I’ll use these Comment
Starters to help me give him a
really useful comment!
12. Graphics Libraries & Tools
These tools make
graphics easy!
So I can spend
my time on ideas
for my project.
Background and Object Libraries
Graphics Palette
Animation Editor
13. Journal & Presentation Tool
So now that I have done all my thinking and planning…
made all my mistakes… listened to my friends… I can
make my project presentation in Journal Zone too.
14. Although Journal Zone has rich
multimedia features, it is
predominantly about thinking…
thinking more deeply about
learning and about the task at
hand.
