What are the things behind it…??
• Where??
• Why??
• When??
• How and Problems faced..
• Possible or not??
• Can it ??
• Is it??
• Final Conclusion….
2
Where???
The City of Dreams
DUBAI
3
Palm Island ( Palm Jumeirah )
• Location
4
Why???
• Dubai is famous for its GOLD,TRADE and OIL RESERVES
5
• By 2018 its main income Oil Reserves will get over.
• To over come this problem the crown prince SHAKE MOHAMED BIN RASHEED
AHAMAD has a 2 billon dollar plan to convert Dubai into a luxurious tourist
destination.
• To put Dubai in map he had constructed one of the luxurious hotel, top class golf and
race coarse and was planning for world’s tallest building.
6
• The crown prince idea was to increase the tourism from 5 million to 15 million
• But Dubai's tourism mainly depends upon the coastal area but there was not
enough space for 15 million people so he decided to construct an island on
Persian gulf.
7
When??
• The Palm Jumeriah was started on AUGUST 2001 and crown prince
idea was to finish it by 2006.
• World's best engineers were needed for the project. Dutch, who have
increased Holland's land by 35%. they were booked .
• To blend in with surroundings crown prince wanted the island to be
built only by using sand and rocks.
• Which is 94 million cubic meter of sand and 5.5 million cubic meter of
rocks.
8
Construction Machineries Used
9 barges, 15 dumpers, 4 dredgers, 30 heavy land base machines and 10 cranes
were used.
9
Steps Involved in the construction
Step 1 : Estimation of WAVE STRENGHT
Step 2 : Construction Of BREAKWATER
Step 3 : Sand Filling and Compaction
Step 4 : Construction of Buildings
10
How and problems faced ??
Step 1 : To estimate the strength of the waves , the rise in water level due
to global warming .
• Research team worked out that Arabian gulf is only 160 Km wide and only 30
meters deep, hence too short and too shallow for catastrophic waves to built
up.
• Breakwater was to be constructed having height up to 3 meters and 11.5 Km
long.
11
Step 2 : Construction of Break water :-
• Dredgers would collect sand from the sea and dump it where break water was
to be constructed
• For the construction 5.5 million cubic meter of rock was needed. They were
taken from quarries of UAE.
12
• Each piece of rock weighed about 6 tons which is excavated from 16 quarries
across UAE.
13
• Break water constructions was started from august 2001 .
• But on September 2001 WTC was attacked .
• Suddenly the tourism to middle east stopped.
• Over coming the problem the break water was made to rise.
14
Step 3 : Sand Filling :
• 94 million cubic sand was needed for the construction of this island .
15
Position of Palm Island :
• There were only two straight lines in the Palm Island rest of them were curve.
• On land it was impossible to tell the shape of the Palm .
• By the help of GPS it was made easy.
16
Possible or Not ??
• Suddenly the constructed was stopped
• The water was appearing to be stagnate by this design.
17
Compaction :
• The sand was just sprayed but was not compacted .
• First they thought of roller compacting later they considered earthquake effect
and allowed Vibro Compaction method.
• Liquification would have happened if vibro compaction was not done.
18
Can it??
• By march 2004 Phase 1 was finished and by 2006 the whole construction of the
buildings must be done.
• Before it was estimated for 60,000 people but later it was made double because
of demand.
19
Erosion :
• Due to wave action there will be sand erosion.
• Due to the construction of the Palm Island the beach sand is eroded in
someplace and deposited in someplace.
• This is checked by using dredgers.
20
Is it??
• The environmentalists were worried about the carol reef and the aquatic life
which was another source of income.
• But the studies proved that the break water had given shelter to many type of
fishes and the carol reef is created by itself , hence it was planed to improve.
• Thus, the environmentalist had no objection to the project.
21
Final Conclusion
• By this success of Palm Island the Crown Prince planed for another palm
shaped island which is three times bigger than Palm Jumeirah and named it as
“PALM JEBEL ALI”.
• And constructed the islands which looks like the world from space and named
it was “THE WORLD”
