PUMC Goal Areas
The following five goal areas and subtending
goals were developed by the Church Council
between January and March of 2009. All
Church Council members were invited to
provide input to the prioritization process.
These results were reviewed and agreed to at
the Church Council/Committee Planning Retreat
held on Saturday, March 28.
In addition to the goals, all input received during
the goal review and prioritization process is
included.
4. 4PUMC 2009/2010 Planning Process04/30/2009
Additional ideas from 1/5/09 brainstorm or survey input (# = votes if applicable):
Reach out to “unchurched,” “out-of-church,” “over-churched” (7)
Set up a program for members who have not attended for 6 consecutive weeks to be called or
visited by another member.
Develop process to match visitors with members for most effective follow up and outreach
** Moved from “Serving in the Community” goal area
5. 5PUMC 2009/2010 Planning Process04/30/2009
Additional ideas from 1/5/09 brainstorm or survey input (# = votes if applicable):
Make sure we are offering ways for the unchurched to come worship with us (7)
Create additional ways to teach/nurture children and youth through the worship experience (3)
Provide education about worship [its purpose/goal/function] and how that relates to the way(s) we
go about it now, and how we might in the future
Explore interfaith worship experiences with people of other faiths (e.g., Jewish, Muslim)
Create ways to reach out to young adults college age to late 20s
Eliminate the children’s sermon because of lack of attendance
Have youth sing at 9:30 service and offer Sunday School classes during both services
6. 6PUMC 2009/2010 Planning Process04/30/2009
Additional ideas from 1/5/09 brainstorm or survey input (# = votes if applicable):
Try to get enough small groups established so that all congregants who will/wish to participate have a small group to attend;
encourage and enable participation of the congregation in small group ministries (7)
Support needs of the elderly / See that elderly members feel involved (5)
Offer more opportunities for spiritual growth (3)
Support and develop a program of Stephen Ministry (3)
Linking into larger United Methodist Church
Doing things together with lots of opportunities for service, fun and fellowship will make a livelier church than “structured”
friendliness.
Small groups that are limited in term, like a walking group, short study, craft project would be a nice option. Set a time period,
six weeks or so. Mix generations. How about a cook for good health group to accommodate all of us who need to eat more
healthfully?
7. 7PUMC 2009/2010 Planning Process04/30/2009
Additional ideas from 1/5/09 brainstorm or survey input (# = votes if applicable):
Establish a member disciple growth curriculum and plan, applicable to all members (5)
Implement education for all age levels at both services (5)
Create an Internet Mission – Christian Education/Q&A/etc. via website (3)
Encourage hiring of Christian Ed. Minister to develop vital programs for children and youth that
complement our excellent church school program and are sensitive to the lifestyles of today’s youth
and families
Offer “Spanish as a Second Language” classes to increase our ability to reach out to the Latino
population. Include members of the Spanish-language Sunday School class to help teach.
Discern the needs of adult education [related to nurturing] and seek to meet those needs
Provide/sponsor education which is open to the community
Teacher support – workshops, training for new teachers, “days off,” fellowship/spiritual opportunities
Make better use of all church facilities, especially the new youth room (12 votes for “finish the Youth
Room”)
8. 8PUMC 2009/2010 Planning Process04/30/2009
Additional ideas from 1/5/09 brainstorm or survey input (# = votes if applicable):
Increase our visibility within the community – host outside speakers, etc. (8)
Outreach to Latino residents in town to encourage participation in Spanish speaking class (5)
Cross fertilization with Princeton University, Princeton Theological Seminary, Westminster Choir
College, etc.(6)
Support community housing projects like Habitat for Humanity (3)
Visiting older people in communities (3)
Develop a program to appeal to non-member students (arts-based maybe?)

PUMC Goals
At the Church Council Planning Retreat, we divided into five small
groups, each group focusing on one of the five goal areas. These
small groups were formed as follows:
Goal: Reaching People Through Membership, Membership and
Growth Committees
Goal: Reaching People Through Worship, Worship Committee
Goal: Nurturing People in our Congregation, Trustees
Goal: Teaching God’s People, Education and Youth
Goal: Serving God’s People, Outreach Committee
The small groups began to develop specific objectives and action
plans to tackle the goals within each Goal Area. Work will continue
at the Committee and Church Council levels throughout the
remainder of this calendar year. The work completed at the Church
Council Retreat by each small group follows.

PUMC 2009 Goal Worksheet: Membership
SMART Objectives:
1. Establish a database to allow PUMC
to track who is active in the life of the
church. Include tracking those who
participate in worship. Also capture
those who participate in other church-
related activities, e.g. adult education,
youth activities, Church School, etc.
2. Determine whether Fellowship
Friends program should be extended
to those who fall somewhere between
first time visitors and those who have
made the commitment to become
members of PUMC.
Goal Area:
Reaching People through Membership
Goals:
1. Reach out to and follow up with inactive
members to see why they have become
inactive and invite them back to PUMC.
2. Proactive pursuit of visitors
a. Develop/implement a new visitor follow-up
program
b. Have people greet and introduce visitors on
Sunday mornings
3. Improve membership attendance, tracking
and reporting process
Committee or Mission:
Membership

PUMC 2009 Goal Worksheet: Growth
SMART Objectives:
1. Establish a robust Sunday morning greeter
program in order to create a welcoming
atmosphere for first-time (as well as repeat)
visitors to PUMC. The Sunday morning
greeter program will also provide a vehicle
for gathering information about our visitors.
n Possibly have greeter program involve
establishment of “Visitors Table” in Sanford
Davis Room.
2. Establish pew pads (aka Ritual of
Friendship) and sign-in sheets for the
various adult education and other Church
School morning activities). This will provide
information for the database (Membership
Objective) and visitor follow-up program.
3. Work with PUMC staff to develop a
stronger follow-up program for
communicating with visitors – more than
PUMC’s current practice of sending visitors
a one-time note and brochure.
Goal Area:
Reaching People through Membership
Goals:
1. Reach out to and follow up with inactive
members to see why they have become
