1. H1N1 OFFENSE 2013
• There are two ways to beat cover 2: physical running (not allowed in
flag) or deep routes. So, we must throw deep (or at least establish
that threat).
• Defense will either switch to cover 3, or underneath zone defeners
will abandon their zone to follow a man deep. Either way, this creates
space underneath for short passing/QB running lanes.
• OR: they switch out of zone into man….then its all up to yall to make
plays.

2. MONDAY NIGHT:
WHAT WORKED

3. • Receivers run more or less vertical routes
• Generally, corners would roll up to cover outside receivers, safeties kept their eyes on
middle guy coming up seam

4. • This leaves big spaces underneath…lots of open grass
• Only the two middle linebackers are left below, they must cover both checkdowns off the
line or the QB run
• Generally this gave Jake some wide running lanes to the outside and he exploited them for
a lot of yards

5. WHAT DIDN’T
WORK

6. • Receivers run at random….just a mess
• Instead of being spread out and forced deep, defense is able to maintain disciplined cover 2
posture, keeping eyes on QB
• Checkdowns, QB have no open grass to run to

7. “MIKE”
• So, our basic play should be “Mike” (named after Mike Leach…air raid genius)
• Two safeties cannot cover three receivers…something’s gotta give
• How they adapt determines what we do next….

8. “EIGHTS”
• Suppose they switch to a 3-2 zone
• Now the quick passing game comes into play
• We can run all curls, and 3 underneath zone defenders must cover 4 receivers

9. • They could switch to man coverage
• If we can’t distribute the ball in man passing situations, we could run a rocket sweep
• Receivers on right side run slants or cross (doesn’t matter)…take men with them away fro
the play

10. MIXING IT UP

11. • If they begin to send two rushers and keep a one high safety look…or if for any reason we
the pass rush begins disrupting the offense….we may need to bring a extra “back” to the
formation.
• This helps contain the rush and gives us flexibility

12. • Originally “Mills,” this has been the foundation of Steve Spurrier’s offense since the 90s.
• Four men blocking on line in order to give time for deeper routes to develop
• Blocker (doesn’t matter who) chips and then releases for “Bust up the sidelines” (BUS)
route.
• Key read is the safety. If he follows post, ball should be thrown to dig simultaneous with
cut.

13. • If they shift too far to right side…run speed option to left
“SPEED”

14. “BOBBY”
• Or “shallow cross”…Petrino’s favorite play
• We have receivers running into three different vertical levels…shown in red
• But zone is only two levels…high and low
• This should create mismatch
