2. Romans 3:29Is God the God of Jews only? Is He not the God of the nations too? Yes of the nations too, since there is only one God Who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith.
3. John 18:1-111 When He had finished praying, Jesus left with His disciples and crossed the Kidron valley. On the other side there was an olive grove, and He and His disciples went into it. 2 Now Judas, who betrayed Him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with His disciples. 3 So Judas came to the grove, guiding a detatchment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.
4. 4 Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to Him, went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?” 5 “Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “I am He,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) 6 When Jesus said, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground. 7 Again he asked them, “Who is it you want? And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”
5. 8 “I told you that I am He,” Jesus answered. “If you are looking for me, then let these men go.” 9 This happened so that the words He had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.” 10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.) 11 Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?”

8. Heavenly Father, we have sinned. We have sinned in the evil we have done, and in the good we have failed to do. And even in the good that we have done, we have sinned in our motives. We have been motivated to do good for our own sake – our own reputations, our own self-satisfaction – rather than for your glory.
9. And then we have sinned by being proud of this ‘good’ that we have done. Father, forgive us. Forgive us for the pride, the self-righteousness, self-sufficiency, self-reliance and self-centeredness that taints everthing we do. We are so much like the people of whom your Word says, “every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time”.
10. Oh Father, change us. Help us to see the extent of our own sinfulness, so that we are rightly humbled. And help us to see the extent of your mercy, so that we are rightly motivated to do good by a thankfulness to you for that mercy. In all that we do, may we do it for you. Amen.
