Music Concert essay
Extra–Credit
Dance Theater Music Art On the 3 November 2012, my classmates and I were to attend a music
dance concert in the Feddersen Recital Hall in Mount San Antonio College. we were being seat in
the circle, where I can observed most things from the floor above. The hall is quite a small grand
but in simple and elegant way, and with simple lighting. I love it although it is not as large–scale as
others performance at Los Angeles downtown. Before the performance begins, there was whispered
in the hall as the spectators were discussing what to anticipate from this dance concert and most of
them dress in semi formal. As for the performers, they carefully and delicately tune their...show more

The reason that i loved this song is because i can tell what is the story they are telling even though
i do not have to look at the name of this song. The song is very vigorous and hurried, they had
succeeded to perform the story of this theme. The second songs that i love named Waiting in the
Sky by David Bowie. At the begin, there is one person with a small television at the middle of the
stage. After a while, people came out one by one with dancing. The background light was blue, and
people all dancing with sportswear. There is two part of this theme. The first part people are
dancing ballet with the song of 1960s. The background music was soft and slow. The music began
gradually fast, and people has became faster by follow the rhythm. The song has turned to second
part, the background music is pop–music; the song is very happy and lively with their cheery
dancing. They seems like a small group people having fun together with happiness. I like this one
because their dancing has specially express two different stories to spectators. P.3 The last song was
the song that i loved the most in this performance. The background music is pop–music, performers
all dressing fashion in this theme. People were dancing hip–hop and street–dance that i really love.
In this theme, The beat is very prominent and performers dances very rhythmically, that has made me
very want to follow

many aspects. Some of these aspects include choreography, technique, and roles of men and women.

Topic: This article delves into the idea of the femme fatal. The author illustrates this idea through
self–photographs composed by artist Countess de Castiglione.
Thesis: Within this article the artist Countess de Castiglione tells a story of the femme fatal through
self–taken photographs. This is important and a great feat because she does not show her face in
any of the photographs. By doing this she conceals the audience or onlooker from becoming
personal with her and looking at her through the male gaze. In each of the photographs her legs are
positioned in a different way. Each photograph is choreographed through her legs to tell the story.
Relevance: This article will aid in my argument of ballet being seen under only one gaze. This is
because I will be able to relate what artist Countess de Castiglione did with her photographs to
ballet specifically the female body. I will also be able to incorporate some background concerning
what modern dance did as they concealed the face. I will also be able to express a connection
between dance and another art form for my

Argumentative Essay On Dance
As dance being known as an art form that can portray symbolic meanings and influence society, not
many dance companies are grasping at the opportunity to address many of these social issues that
our culture is facing. "I feel as though [major dance companies] do the happy–go–lucky dances and
never do the gritty, what's really going on in dances, says high school junior Jenae Rogers from
George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology. The modern world has been brought
up against multiple issues, ones that relate close to home, and ones that might not particularly
pertain to us. Despite not being able to primarily fix these issues, we can certainly draw attention
to it. Social commentary is the act of using rhetorical means to provide commentary on issues in
society. Betty Cooper, Chamber Dance Company's Program Director, explains that "As an
ephemeral art form, people tend to let dance wash over them like a sunset, and don't necessarily
expect more of it than to be poetic. But dance is a medium that is as potent for social commentary
as the spoken and written word." Many outsiders feel as though dance is just a hobby, but dancers
and dance companies can do a lot to help spread awareness of certain issues. Police brutality, gender
diversity, and eating disorders or weight shaming can all be addressed in major dance companies.
Dance gives us the ability to share our thoughts on social issues that do not get the attention they
need in order to be helped. Nonetheless,

How To Write A Dance Analysis
The first piece was entitled "You, Me, & Us". Due to having troubles catching the MARTA bus, I
missed a good portion of this performance and had to view the rest of the performance on the
teleprompter. The dancers were moving in a circle with a person in the center and all of the dancers
were wearing earth tones. The music was very serene and at the conclusion of the performance, all
of the dancers hugged each other. From what I saw, this performance represented how all humans
are interconnected on this Earth, this can be seen by all of the dancers hugging in the end and also
the title of the piece. The next piece was entitled "Satin and Tulle". It began with a dancer in pointe
ballerina shoes and a leotard coming out towards the audience and dropping pointe ballet shoes in
front of us. The dancers were pulling what seemed to be the ribbons on a pointe ballet shoe out
from backstage onto the stage. The ribbons were the focal point on this performance. The dancers
then became tangled up in the ribbons, almost as if the dancers were lost within their passion of dance
, and continued to dance in perfect unision. The dancers would place the ribbons around their necks,
like the dancers wanted to harm themselves. With the music, I noticed that whenever the music
became very loud and busy, the dancer would...show more content...
After the striking of bells, the music began to play and it was very soothing. The dancers were
moving with fluidity on stage without any sudden movements. Throughout the piece, two dancers
would be dancing together while the rest of the dancers were on the floor with their feet in the air.
This piece seemed to signify friendship and how no matter where you go or how many people you
may meet–signified by a dancer from the pair dancing with the other dancers as a group–you will

My overall response to the dance concert is spectacular because each dance piece was moving,
remarkable, and motivational. Each dance had an astounding affect on me and allowed to me

Brief Study of Recent History and "One Heart, Two Worlds", for the Spring 2016 Studio 115Dance

75). Modern dance is all about the concentration on innovation. The dance, "One heart, Two worlds"
has a huge connection with the choreographers, Doris Humphrey, and Charles Weidman, a
technique of "music visualization". When it came to creating dances, Humphrey was interested in
group dynamics. She also had a strong connection with music, therefore, music visualization is "a
way to see the music through the dance, sometimes having the dances follow rhythmic patterns
(pg.81). Also, the choreographer, Isadora Duncan, created dances centered on the emotion of
Mother, depicting a sorrowful and broken figure. This emotion relates to the duo dance scene, the
girl connecting with the world of dreaming and the harsh world of reality; however, in the end, she
appears to be broken when separated from her dream. Also, Duncan went against the traditional
form of ballet by creating dances in ways that were more natural, like movements of the trees or
ocean as well as being inspired by not restricting movement by providing the dancers with loose
costumes. The dance "One Heart, Two Worlds" also depicts movements in a more natural way such
as the nature of

Concert Review
I attended this concert at CU Denver's King Center, Concert Hall. Although the architectural design
and surrounding did not attest to much artistic creativity, the actual concert was better than my
expectations. I did have lower expectations because it was presented by students instead of
professional musicians or dancers as in my last concert review. The ensemble, a collaborative
outcome from MSU Denver and other dance/cultural music groups from denver, was actually a mix
of African and Indian/East Asian music and dance. The two teams alternated between each other
giving the audience a great deal of contrast of movement and sound. My favorite were the second
and fifth performances, African and Indian respectively.
The second performance by...show more content...
They presented a story of a goddess teasing a boy with a magical ball, then throwing it into a pond
where a monster is asleep. The boy then awakens this monster trying to reach the ball. The story is
meant to encourage people to face their fears and fight for what they want. I liked how they used the
same movements when they were describing the story before starting their performance which they
later used during the dance. For example, one of the dancers showed the same throwing movement
which she later used in the performance. The dance was accompanied by an Indian chant like song
over the speakers. It had the same simplistic nature as the African music discussed above which I
again noticed that it put the focus on the dancers. They music and movement was much slower and
calmer than the Africans, which makes sense when seen in light of the Eastern Asian spiritual
philosophy of

Before the show begins, I am in two places at once. I am seated with the rest of the audience,

Abba melodies from "Super Trooper" to "Take a Chance on Me." The backup vocalists and lead
musicians take their places on stage. Finally Kristal Jackson enters from stage left, costumed as one

According to "Access all Eras: Tribute Bands and Global Pop Culture," successful tribute bands take
note of the way that "audiences respond to popular music" and reproduce the essential details of the
original performance (21). The book notes that most professional tribute shows "exactly replicate
clothes, hairstyles and instruments" (5). Just as importantly, tribute bands try to find "the tribute
act's essence...those aspects of the tributed act that make it unique," such as the mannerisms, speech,
and behaviour of the original performers (21). For example, the band Abba originated in Sweden,
and despite being an all–Canadian cast, the performers in the tribute band Abbamania attempt to
replicate the Swedish accent of the original artists. Of course, these minor details are not nearly as
important as the sound of the music which the tribute band produces. Aside from its unique violin
overture, the Abbamania show remains faithful to the original arrangements of Abba songs. This
faithfulness is one of the distinctive differences between tribute bands and cover artists (3).
However, one of the more notable differences between the original Abba performance and the tribute
band is the framing of time in each

Dance Performance Evaluation
On November 3, 2017, I want to see a live performance performed by a student in the Dance
Department at the University of California, Riverside. Before the performance stated, I was
excited because I had never attended a live dance performance. I was pretty satisfied because I was
really engaged with the work of Hyoin Jun. I thought that his dance was really unique since I had
never seen this type of dance before.
The performance started with the performer dragging himself on the floor. It was as if the floor
were his partner. At first I was confused because I did not understand why he was traveling like
that. I noticed that at the beginning, he started off by making an "X" shape cross the stage. I found
this very odd at first but then I began

Break Dancing Essay Topics
Break Dancing Most people have heard of break dancing and have been amazed and mystified by
the extraordinary movement, but what is it really and where did originate from? Many people
have influenced the history of break dancing and will continue to. From being a recreational sport
it has become competitive and addictive to hundreds of people all around the world as some of
the greats of the business like Kujo to the new learners experiment and progress further the sport
will never die out. Break dancing was created in the 1980s where it was powered by the media for
a couple of years until it crashed out of the lime light. But it continued and became one of the four

This led to people rehearsing their moves and creating and better ones that were more complex by
increasing speed, form and the complicity of moves. As money could not be made from break
dancing music was promoted which in turn led to break dancing hitting clubs and parties as the
music took off songs like "Get on the Good Foot" by James Brown lead to huge developments
economically. Break dancing once again came back into the light. By the 1980s a man named
Afrika Bambaataa appeared out of no where on to the scene a master DJ releasing "Looking for
the Perfect Beat" which was enjoyed by all music critics reaching number 4 in the American
charts and he evidentially became a record producer. Afrika Bambaataa then started a new crew
know as The Zulu Kings. They made hundreds of appearances all over New York and getting
thousands of supporters. The old style of break dancing was much simpler then you see today, the
moves were more around fast moving leg work which was composed of floor work or floor rock this
is now known as old–style breaking. The movements were speeded up so that they looked far more
complex then they actually are and it wasn't long till most people had there own style battling each
other. As the gangs only started practicing break dancing they renamed their group into crews which
is the more update word that is used today.

Analysis Of Dance With My Father
"Dance With My Father", a song written and produced by Luther Vandross in 2003, was voted
Song of the Year during the 2003 Grammy Awards. Alongside Richard Marx, Luther Vandross wrote
the song based on his personal experiences and feelings (Walden, 2011). The heart–touching,
soul–snatching lyrics of the song recall childhood memories, Luther Vandross shared with his
deceased father who passed away when Luther Vandross was only seven years old. The lyrics give
listeners very detailed, and in–depth examples of the memories Luther Vandross had of his father,
who used to dance with him and his mother. Considered by Luther Vandross as his career hit song,
"Dance With My Father" is a tribute to his father, Luther Vandross, Sr., who died as a result of
complications of diabetes (Walden, 2011). According to his co–writer, Richard Marx, "Dance With
My Father" was an emotional piece of work for Luther Vandross, because it was "a subject matter
Luther Vandross hadn't written before" (Billboard, 2004). With a background of strings and
interplay of piano and drums, Luther Vandross sings about a series of fond, unforgettable
memories, with his late father (Flick, 2003). In an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, Luther
Vandross' mother Mary Ida says "I was amazed at how well Luther remembered his father, how we
used to dance and sing in the house"(Ebony, 2003). Interviewer Barry Walters of Rolling Stone
Magazine qualifies the memories invoked in the lyrics as painful and private

The story of Elena Gallegos is a really amazing story on ballroom dancing and how she got into it

time in Atlanta Georgia.Elena Gallegos really seemed to love ballroom dancing. Her parents

Reflection On Improvisation In Dance
When I think back to what I originally thought improvisation was and to what I think it is now, I am
amazed at how much my ideas about improvisation have changed. At the beginning of this course, I
remember making it very clear that I believed that improvisation was any movement that a dancer
does in a setting that is not planned or pre–choreographed. I also said that improvisation was when a
dancer moves in a way that is random and without thought. Improvisation to me was freedom in
movement. In a way, what I thought about improvisation was true to some degree but not true in the
most degree. What I have found is that improvisation is indeed when a dancer dances in an
unplanned state, but improvisation is not thoughtless. In fact, when a...show more content...
As we have moved through the semester, my ideas about why we participate in improvisation have
also changed. When I wrote my 1st written assignment, I remember saying that improvisation was
strictly used as a way to get dance ideas out, to see how a dancer' body is moving and naturally
operating, and to dance without a real purpose. I have found that I am not wrong about why we
choose to improvise, but improvisation is so much more than a superficial dance thing. On page
nine of Free Play: Improvisation in Life and Art, Nachmanovitch says about improvisation, "The
real story is about spontaneous expression, and it is, therefore, a spiritual and a psychological
story rather than a story about the technique of one art form or another." When we improvise, yes
we are dancing to figure out what our bodies can do, but the way that we choose to dance during
improvisation, tells us so much more about our own selves. We improvise in order to showcase our
authentic inner feelings, thoughts, emotions, and what we subconsciously think dance should be.
Essentially, the purpose of improvisation is to tell a personal story. Every time we improvise, the
current story may have similarities to a previous story, but every improvisation, in the end, is a new
personal story. On page twenty–seven of Free Play: Improvisation in Life and Art, Nachmanovitch
states, "As our playing, writing, speaking, drawing, or dancing

Dance Concert Essay
The 2017 Spring Works Dance Concert, presented by Purdue's Contemporary Dance Company,
displayed various dance pieces that had diverse choreographic structures and appeared to be created
from compositional processes that were very similar to the processes we explored in class. All of the
choreographers in this concert exhibited their own works through exclusive compositional tools. For
example, in the work "Unlocking Energy", choreographed by Mary Beth Van Dyke, the sustained
arm movements initiated throughout her piece appeared to glide from one motion to the next with
ease. The arm movements in this piece differed considerably when compared to the hand gestures in
"12th Drowned", choreographed by Kathleen Hickey. The hand gestures in "12th...show more

For example, the unique production elements, such as: white wigs and upstage lighting, enabled the
audience to immediately become engrossed in the dark meaning of the piece. Additionally, the
compositional tools such as: even phrasing, and fast tempos displayed throughout the piece, made
the overall energy of "State of Affairs" elevated. At times, it appeared, that even during the parts of
the movements that contrasted with the music, the audience could not look away from the dancers'
movements. Without any one of these elements, I believe the piece could be understood in a very
different way, which is not bad but is also not supportive of what the work is trying to portray
overall. Ultimately, Carol Cunningham–Sigman's piece, as well as the rest of the pieces in the
concert, made the 2017 Spring Works Dance Concert, a hard concert to

Jean Wolfmeyer School Of Dance Critique
From kindergarten until high school, I was a member of the Jean Wolfmeyer School of Dance.
Up to 5 days per week, I would be at the dance studio taking classes, rehearsing for shows, and
helping out in the less advanced classes. Regardless of skill level, Jean never hesitated to speak the
brutally honest truth about students' performances and she never settled for anything less than
perfection. Jean would often preach that she is only the instruction manual and she cannot make us

that motivated dancers to perform well, it was her relentless work ethic and commitment to her
studio. As a 70 year–old women, Jean held classes as much as 7 days per

Analysis Of Pablo Picasso And The Three Dancers
During heart–breaking times, the despair can sometimes be revealed in the form of dance. Artists
often work this art form into their paintings, sculptures, music videos, and drawings, revealing how
the power of dance can reflect upon those emotions. Likewise, in the painting Les Trois Danseuses,
more commonly known as The Three Dancers, the artist, Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) portrays three
distorted dancers. The painting was created between Picasso's Cubism and Classicism periods, in the
year of 1925. Picasso exemplified the heart–breaking suicide of his friend, Carlos Casagemas, who
had been involved in a triangular love affair illustrated within the painting (Tate para 1). Similarly,
within the painting Dancers at the Barre, by the...show more content...
The background appears to be an open balcony window, possibly allowing the dancers to reflect on
their experiences. A sense of fresh air, a cleansing of themselves, may also be interpreted, further
portraying the dance itself. Although the three dancers appear to be polar opposites, they are
brought together through the art of dance, each holding hands and changing their rhythms.
The use of scale and shape, variety, repetition, and color aid in exemplifying the underlying theme
of tragedy within Picasso's painting. The image emphasizes the variety of shapes, which causes
the concept of chaos to be highlighted. This chaos reveals the different aspects that each of the
dancers possesses. A rather prominent variety in shapes and colors provides interest by causing
little focus on one specific frame. An array of colors provides for character within each dancer.
The leftmost dancer shares colors with the other two, creating a sense of being a part of each.
Bold reds, dull pinks, and bright blues cause this dancer to be portrayed as the most chaotic, along
with the random patterns and variety of shapes that captivate the dancer's body. Possibly
resembling how hardships and successes can affect an individual. A combination of dark colors
and white with jagged, geometric lines, the dancer on the far right appears to resemble the efforts
of good and evil; however, in this case, the dark seems to be

presented wonderfully combined movements, technique and emotion. Ms. Donna Wood uses tragic

In the second section background lightening became blue and the stage color gets brighter. Still
we can see and feel some dark sides of lightening. Music tempo was faster and stronger and Ms.
Donna Wood has stronger movements. The most interesting in this section was singing human
voice. She starts to sing and has a little smile on her face. Most of her movement shape was very
sharp, edgy and angled especially her arms at first. She represents them to be united and get free.
By jumping and crossing arms, she sinks to earth and then she rises. Strong steps and ecstatically
raised arms, dances freely off the stage, toward freedom. In short, in this part of work the young
women life get better and better, but still it wasn't completed. In the third section Ms. Donna
Wood looks like an African goddess and her body has an unexpected gracefulness. Even stage
color was bright reddish, warm atmosphere around the dancer, like a sunrise in the morning. Stage
would fill with colors. Music and performer are singing together. A sound of music tempo gets
faster. She has the happiest face ever, no pain and no slavery. She jumps, she swings her leg and
arms, and even she pulls her dress up and shows her leg an entire dance. Sound and lightening create
the environment and good mood. She uses high level of dance than in previous two sections. She

"SLIP" Contemporary Dance Critique As I began watching the dance, I immediately felt a
connection between the elements of movement and the music of the piece as if the music was words
on a page and the movements like illustrations. I also began noticing Laban characteristics of flow
and space throughout the duo's dance that coupled with the music to create imagery of a couple
struggling to find strength in their relationship.
I felt that the dance was extensively dependent on the music, specifically the lyrics. As the
repetition of the lyrics began, the dancers began the repeat similar movements; for example, when
the lyrics repeat "slip, slip, slipping down", the dancers physically slip away from each other as
when she slowly slides to the floor only to be caught by his grasp. The music coupled with the
lyrical movements of the dance made me feel as if the dance was telling a story of a couple. The
music starts with a smooth swaying rhythmic feel steadily intensifying as the dance progresses.
The movements of the duo matched the music starting smooth and steady but becoming sharp
and direct in certain aspects of the dance, such as when he holds her in his arms almost as if she
is lifeless and swaying to the music; however, in contrast later as the beat picks up, her
movements are direct with sharp angular lines of her legs as she separates from her partner. I feel
like the music allowed them to tell a story of a couple passionately in love but struggling to continue
on. The intimate nature of the dance and consistent push and pull effect from the dancers alludes
that they are in a relationship. The entire dance the couple is intertwined with each other, slipping
away separately but pulled back in by the partner, until ultimately he slips through her grasp as he
forcefully pulls away leaving her lying on the floor.
Throughout the majority of the song, the dancers expressed free flow such as when they began the
dance with wave like motions of their arms intertwined with the beat of the music. The fluidity of
the movements continued as the male dancer lifted the female into the air and across his shoulders,
she then slid down him as if her body was free and he was in control. The movements are
lightweight and

Dance Critique
The traits I have obtained from dance can best be explained through the lessons I have
experienced. The most valuable lesson is that critiques can either damage or improve someone; the
amount of change the critique makes is for the receiver to choose. Dancing teaches that I will
always be making mistakes, but a positive mindset is key. To grow as a dancer, I must respectfully
listen to the critiques and make a valid effort to improve, not only for myself, but also for the team.
Dancing has shaped me into a confident, determined person that will be able to apply lessons learned
throughout my life.
Teamwork is the most important trait when having a team that wants to excel at their sport, and I
believe at Chilton, we go beyond the expectations. To work as a team, you must have a certain
bond with each teammate to feel comfortable enough to correct them if something they are doing
is incorrect. Something I really stress to the freshman on the team is that they should feel
comfortable to telling me what I am doing wrong, even if I am a senior. To help the team,
everyone must take part and be a leader in their own ways, whether it be teaching a girl
choreography she missed or improving their own leaps. These skills learned from dance can be

Dance Criticism Elements
In the book Writing Dance in the Age of Postmodernism, Sally Banes offers four examples of dance
criticism. Banes says, "a writer must tell what the dancer did, what they communicated, and how
remarkable that was" (24). To do so, she reveals a dance critic can perform elements of description,
interpretation, evaluation, and contextualization through their reviews. Interpretation appears to be
the most appealing category within dance criticism. Interpretation encompasses what the dance
means. Essentially, it is what the choreographer and dancers are trying to communicate with the
audience. The category of interpretation can often be the most difficult to determine in dance and
for me that is what makes it the most appealing aspect of dance criticism. Since movements don't
come with a defined vocabulary, there is no guarantee of a clear communication of ideas between
the choreographer and viewers. I think this is what makes a performance so particularly exciting
for the viewer. The interpretive aspect of dance allows the viewer to actively participate in the
performance. In relation to their own personal experiences, they can bend what they see according
to what they know and in some instances may learn something new about the world or themselves
through the dance performance. Banes offered a good example by Jack Anderson that I was
enthralled by (28). Anderson applied such connotation to the description of the performance. I am
able to read the review and can bring it to

  • 1. Dance Performance Review Essay P.1 November 4, 2012 Music14 Music Concert essay Extra–Credit Dance Theater Music Art On the 3 November 2012, my classmates and I were to attend a music dance concert in the Feddersen Recital Hall in Mount San Antonio College. we were being seat in the circle, where I can observed most things from the floor above. The hall is quite a small grand but in simple and elegant way, and with simple lighting. I love it although it is not as large–scale as others performance at Los Angeles downtown. Before the performance begins, there was whispered in the hall as the spectators were discussing what to anticipate from this dance concert and most of them dress in semi formal. As for the performers, they carefully and delicately tune their...show more content... The reason that i loved this song is because i can tell what is the story they are telling even though i do not have to look at the name of this song. The song is very vigorous and hurried, they had succeeded to perform the story of this theme. The second songs that i love named Waiting in the Sky by David Bowie. At the begin, there is one person with a small television at the middle of the stage. After a while, people came out one by one with dancing. The background light was blue, and people all dancing with sportswear. There is two part of this theme. The first part people are dancing ballet with the song of 1960s. The background music was soft and slow. The music began gradually fast, and people has became faster by follow the rhythm. The song has turned to second part, the background music is pop–music; the song is very happy and lively with their cheery dancing. They seems like a small group people having fun together with happiness. I like this one because their dancing has specially express two different stories to spectators. P.3 The last song was the song that i loved the most in this performance. The background music is pop–music, performers all dressing fashion in this theme. People were dancing hip–hop and street–dance that i really love. In this theme, The beat is very prominent and performers dances very rhythmically, that has made me very want to follow Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Scope: Dance Research Journal, Vol. 21, No. 2, (1989), pp. 15–24 Published by Congress on Research in Dance Topic: This article delves into comparisons and differences of contemporary and older forms ofballet . Thesis: This article is mainly concerned with comparing contemporary ballet with the earliest forms of ballet. By showing these comparisons the reader is able to understand how ballet evolved under many aspects. Some of these aspects include choreography, technique, and roles of men and women. In addition, the authors also go into some broad theories in art and relate them back...show more content... "The Legs of the Theorist." Dance Research Journal, 32(2), (2000), pp. 120–124. The author illustrates this idea through self–photographs composed by artist Countess de Castiglione. Thesis: Within this article the artist Countess de Castiglione tells a story of the femme fatal through self–taken photographs. This is important and a great feat because she does not show her face in any of the photographs. By doing this she conceals the audience or onlooker from becoming personal with her and looking at her through the male gaze. In each of the photographs her legs are positioned in a different way. Each photograph is choreographed through her legs to tell the story. Relevance: This article will aid in my argument of ballet being seen under only one gaze. This is because I will be able to relate what artist Countess de Castiglione did with her photographs to ballet specifically the female body. I will also be able to incorporate some background concerning what modern dance did as they concealed the face. I will also be able to express a connection between dance and another art form for my Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Argumentative Essay On Dance As dance being known as an art form that can portray symbolic meanings and influence society, not many dance companies are grasping at the opportunity to address many of these social issues that our culture is facing. "I feel as though [major dance companies] do the happy–go–lucky dances and never do the gritty, what's really going on in dances, says high school junior Jenae Rogers from George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology. The modern world has been brought up against multiple issues, ones that relate close to home, and ones that might not particularly pertain to us. Despite not being able to primarily fix these issues, we can certainly draw attention to it. Social commentary is the act of using rhetorical means to provide commentary on issues in society. Betty Cooper, Chamber Dance Company's Program Director, explains that "As an ephemeral art form, people tend to let dance wash over them like a sunset, and don't necessarily expect more of it than to be poetic. But dance is a medium that is as potent for social commentary as the spoken and written word." Many outsiders feel as though dance is just a hobby, but dancers and dance companies can do a lot to help spread awareness of certain issues. Police brutality, gender diversity, and eating disorders or weight shaming can all be addressed in major dance companies. Dance gives us the ability to share our thoughts on social issues that do not get the attention they need in order to be helped. Nonetheless, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. How To Write A Dance Analysis The first piece was entitled "You, Me, & Us". Due to having troubles catching the MARTA bus, I missed a good portion of this performance and had to view the rest of the performance on the teleprompter. The dancers were moving in a circle with a person in the center and all of the dancers were wearing earth tones. The music was very serene and at the conclusion of the performance, all of the dancers hugged each other. From what I saw, this performance represented how all humans are interconnected on this Earth, this can be seen by all of the dancers hugging in the end and also the title of the piece. The next piece was entitled "Satin and Tulle". It began with a dancer in pointe ballerina shoes and a leotard coming out towards the audience and dropping pointe ballet shoes in front of us. The dancers were pulling what seemed to be the ribbons on a pointe ballet shoe out from backstage onto the stage. The ribbons were the focal point on this performance. The dancers then became tangled up in the ribbons, almost as if the dancers were lost within their passion of dance , and continued to dance in perfect unision. The dancers would place the ribbons around their necks, like the dancers wanted to harm themselves. With the music, I noticed that whenever the music became very loud and busy, the dancer would...show more content... After the striking of bells, the music began to play and it was very soothing. • 5. Dance Concert Critique My overall response to the dance concert is spectacular because each dance piece was moving, remarkable, and motivational. Each dance had an astounding affect on me and allowed to me repelled into the performance. These impressions came from me analyzing the dance pieces, "A Brief Study of Recent History and "One Heart, Two Worlds", for the Spring 2016 Studio 115Dance Concert Series at USM's Dance and Theatre Building on May 4th. The first performance, "A Brief Study of Recent History" was choreographed by Elizabeth Lentz–Hill and introduced by the dancers Jennifer Alafat, Megan Bradberry, Shaquille Hayes, etc. While the second piece, "One Heart, Two Worlds", was choreographed by Dejonelle Gleeton and the performers were Brittain Allgood,...show more content... 75). Modern dance is all about the concentration on innovation. The dance, "One heart, Two worlds" has a huge connection with the choreographers, Doris Humphrey, and Charles Weidman, a technique of "music visualization". When it came to creating dances, Humphrey was interested in group dynamics. She also had a strong connection with music, therefore, music visualization is "a way to see the music through the dance, sometimes having the dances follow rhythmic patterns (pg.81). Also, the choreographer, Isadora Duncan, created dances centered on the emotion of Mother, depicting a sorrowful and broken figure. This emotion relates to the duo dance scene, the girl connecting with the world of dreaming and the harsh world of reality; however, in the end, she appears to be broken when separated from her dream. Also, Duncan went against the traditional form of ballet by creating dances in ways that were more natural, like movements of the trees or ocean as well as being inspired by not restricting movement by providing the dancers with loose costumes. The dance "One Heart, Two Worlds" also depicts movements in a more natural way such as the nature of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Concert Review I attended this concert at CU Denver's King Center, Concert Hall. Although the architectural design and surrounding did not attest to much artistic creativity, the actual concert was better than my expectations. I did have lower expectations because it was presented by students instead of professional musicians or dancers as in my last concert review. The ensemble, a collaborative outcome from MSU Denver and other dance/cultural music groups from denver, was actually a mix of African and Indian/East Asian music and dance. The two teams alternated between each other giving the audience a great deal of contrast of movement and sound. My favorite were the second and fifth performances, African and Indian respectively. The second performance by...show more content... They presented a story of a goddess teasing a boy with a magical ball, then throwing it into a pond where a monster is asleep. The boy then awakens this monster trying to reach the ball. The story is meant to encourage people to face their fears and fight for what they want. I liked how they used the same movements when they were describing the story before starting their performance which they later used during the dance. For example, one of the dancers showed the same throwing movement which she later used in the performance. The dance was accompanied by an Indian chant like song over the speakers. It had the same simplistic nature as the African music discussed above which I again noticed that it put the focus on the dancers. They music and movement was much slower and calmer than the Africans, which makes sense when seen in light of the Eastern Asian spiritual philosophy of Get more content on HelpWriting.net

I am also "backstage" while my sister Kristal applies makeup and slips into tall white gogo boots. The manager and our long–time family friend, Garry, introduces "the Largest Production of Abba in the World" in his standard announcer voice (Abbamania). The lights are dimmed, the violinists begin playing an upbeat mashup of several Abba melodies from "Super Trooper" to "Take a Chance on Me." The backup vocalists and lead musicians take their places on stage. Finally Kristal Jackson enters from stage left, costumed as one of the female lead singers of Abba. To me, the women on stage looks a lot like...show more content... According to "Access all Eras: Tribute Bands and Global Pop Culture," successful tribute bands take note of the way that "audiences respond to popular music" and reproduce the essential details of the original performance (21). The book notes that most professional tribute shows "exactly replicate clothes, hairstyles and instruments" (5). Just as importantly, tribute bands try to find "the tribute act's essence...those aspects of the tributed act that make it unique," such as the mannerisms, speech, and behaviour of the original performers (21). For example, the band Abba originated in Sweden, and despite being an all–Canadian cast, the performers in the tribute band Abbamania attempt to replicate the Swedish accent of the original artists. Of course, these minor details are not nearly as important as the sound of the music which the tribute band produces. Aside from its unique violin overture, the Abbamania show remains faithful to the original arrangements of Abba songs. This faithfulness is one of the distinctive differences between tribute bands and cover artists (3). However, one of the more notable differences between the original Abba performance and the tribute band is the framing of time in each Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Dance Performance Evaluation On November 3, 2017, I want to see a live performance performed by a student in the Dance Department at the University of California, Riverside. Before the performance stated, I was excited because I had never attended a live dance performance. I was pretty satisfied because I was really engaged with the work of Hyoin Jun. I thought that his dance was really unique since I had never seen this type of dance before. The performance started with the performer dragging himself on the floor. It was as if the floor were his partner. At first I was confused because I did not understand why he was traveling like that. I noticed that at the beginning, he started off by making an "X" shape cross the stage. I found this very odd at first but then I began Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Break Dancing Essay Topics Break Dancing Most people have heard of break dancing and have been amazed and mystified by the extraordinary movement, but what is it really and where did originate from? Many people have influenced the history of break dancing and will continue to. From being a recreational sport it has become competitive and addictive to hundreds of people all around the world as some of the greats of the business like Kujo to the new learners experiment and progress further the sport will never die out. Break dancing was created in the 1980s where it was powered by the media for a couple of years until it crashed out of the lime light. As money could not be made from break dancing music was promoted which in turn led to break dancing hitting clubs and parties as the music took off songs like "Get on the Good Foot" by James Brown lead to huge developments economically. Break dancing once again came back into the light. By the 1980s a man named Afrika Bambaataa appeared out of no where on to the scene a master DJ releasing "Looking for the Perfect Beat" which was enjoyed by all music critics reaching number 4 in the American charts and he evidentially became a record producer. Afrika Bambaataa then started a new crew know as The Zulu Kings. They made hundreds of appearances all over New York and getting thousands of supporters. The old style of break dancing was much simpler then you see today, the moves were more around fast moving leg work which was composed of floor work or floor rock this is now known as old–style breaking. The movements were speeded up so that they looked far more complex then they actually are and it wasn't long till most people had there own style battling each other. As the gangs only started practicing break dancing they renamed their group into crews which is the more update word that is used today. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Analysis Of Dance With My Father "Dance With My Father", a song written and produced by Luther Vandross in 2003, was voted Song of the Year during the 2003 Grammy Awards. Alongside Richard Marx, Luther Vandross wrote the song based on his personal experiences and feelings (Walden, 2011). The heart–touching, soul–snatching lyrics of the song recall childhood memories, Luther Vandross shared with his deceased father who passed away when Luther Vandross was only seven years old. The lyrics give listeners very detailed, and in–depth examples of the memories Luther Vandross had of his father, who used to dance with him and his mother. Considered by Luther Vandross as his career hit song, "Dance With My Father" is a tribute to his father, Luther Vandross, Sr., who died as a result of complications of diabetes (Walden, 2011). According to his co–writer, Richard Marx, "Dance With My Father" was an emotional piece of work for Luther Vandross, because it was "a subject matter Luther Vandross hadn't written before" (Billboard, 2004). With a background of strings and interplay of piano and drums, Luther Vandross sings about a series of fond, unforgettable memories, with his late father (Flick, 2003). In an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, Luther Vandross' mother Mary Ida says "I was amazed at how well Luther remembered his father, how we used to dance and sing in the house"(Ebony, 2003). • 12. Reflection On Improvisation In Dance When I think back to what I originally thought improvisation was and to what I think it is now, I am amazed at how much my ideas about improvisation have changed. At the beginning of this course, I remember making it very clear that I believed that improvisation was any movement that a dancer does in a setting that is not planned or pre–choreographed. I also said that improvisation was when a dancer moves in a way that is random and without thought. Improvisation to me was freedom in movement. In a way, what I thought about improvisation was true to some degree but not true in the most degree. What I have found is that improvisation is indeed when a dancer dances in an unplanned state, but improvisation is not thoughtless. In fact, when a...show more content... As we have moved through the semester, my ideas about why we participate in improvisation have also changed. When I wrote my 1st written assignment, I remember saying that improvisation was strictly used as a way to get dance ideas out, to see how a dancer' body is moving and naturally operating, and to dance without a real purpose. I have found that I am not wrong about why we choose to improvise, but improvisation is so much more than a superficial dance thing. On page nine of Free Play: Improvisation in Life and Art, Nachmanovitch says about improvisation, "The real story is about spontaneous expression, and it is, therefore, a spiritual and a psychological story rather than a story about the technique of one art form or another." When we improvise, yes we are dancing to figure out what our bodies can do, but the way that we choose to dance during improvisation, tells us so much more about our own selves. We improvise in order to showcase our authentic inner feelings, thoughts, emotions, and what we subconsciously think dance should be. Essentially, the purpose of improvisation is to tell a personal story. Every time we improvise, the current story may have similarities to a previous story, but every improvisation, in the end, is a new personal story. On page twenty–seven of Free Play: Improvisation in Life and Art, Nachmanovitch states, "As our playing, writing, speaking, drawing, or dancing Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Dance Concert Essay The 2017 Spring Works Dance Concert, presented by Purdue's Contemporary Dance Company, displayed various dance pieces that had diverse choreographic structures and appeared to be created from compositional processes that were very similar to the processes we explored in class. All of the choreographers in this concert exhibited their own works through exclusive compositional tools. For example, in the work "Unlocking Energy", choreographed by Mary Beth Van Dyke, the sustained arm movements initiated throughout her piece appeared to glide from one motion to the next with ease. The arm movements in this piece differed considerably when compared to the hand gestures in "12th Drowned", choreographed by Kathleen Hickey. The hand gestures in "12th...show more content... Additionally, the compositional tools such as: even phrasing, and fast tempos displayed throughout the piece, made the overall energy of "State of Affairs" elevated. At times, it appeared, that even during the parts of the movements that contrasted with the music, the audience could not look away from the dancers' movements. Without any one of these elements, I believe the piece could be understood in a very different way, which is not bad but is also not supportive of what the work is trying to portray overall. Ultimately, Carol Cunningham–Sigman's piece, as well as the rest of the pieces in the concert, made the 2017 Spring Works Dance Concert, a hard concert to Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 15. Analysis Of Pablo Picasso And The Three Dancers During heart–breaking times, the despair can sometimes be revealed in the form of dance. Artists often work this art form into their paintings, sculptures, music videos, and drawings, revealing how the power of dance can reflect upon those emotions. Likewise, in the painting Les Trois Danseuses, more commonly known as The Three Dancers, the artist, Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) portrays three distorted dancers. The painting was created between Picasso's Cubism and Classicism periods, in the year of 1925. Picasso exemplified the heart–breaking suicide of his friend, Carlos Casagemas, who had been involved in a triangular love affair illustrated within the painting (Tate para 1). Similarly, within the painting Dancers at the Barre, by the...show more content... The background appears to be an open balcony window, possibly allowing the dancers to reflect on their experiences. A sense of fresh air, a cleansing of themselves, may also be interpreted, further portraying the dance itself. Although the three dancers appear to be polar opposites, they are brought together through the art of dance, each holding hands and changing their rhythms. The use of scale and shape, variety, repetition, and color aid in exemplifying the underlying theme of tragedy within Picasso's painting. The image emphasizes the variety of shapes, which causes the concept of chaos to be highlighted. This chaos reveals the different aspects that each of the dancers possesses. A rather prominent variety in shapes and colors provides interest by causing little focus on one specific frame. An array of colors provides for character within each dancer. The leftmost dancer shares colors with the other two, creating a sense of being a part of each. Bold reds, dull pinks, and bright blues cause this dancer to be portrayed as the most chaotic, along with the random patterns and variety of shapes that captivate the dancer's body. Possibly resembling how hardships and successes can affect an individual. A combination of dark colors and white with jagged, geometric lines, the dancer on the far right appears to resemble the efforts of good and evil; however, in this case, the dark seems to be Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Music tempo was faster and stronger and Ms. Donna Wood has stronger movements. The most interesting in this section was singing human voice. She starts to sing and has a little smile on her face. Most of her movement shape was very sharp, edgy and angled especially her arms at first. She represents them to be united and get free. By jumping and crossing arms, she sinks to earth and then she rises. Strong steps and ecstatically raised arms, dances freely off the stage, toward freedom. In short, in this part of work the young women life get better and better, but still it wasn't completed. • 17. "SLIP" Contemporary Dance Critique As I began watching the dance, I immediately felt a connection between the elements of movement and the music of the piece as if the music was words on a page and the movements like illustrations. I also began noticing Laban characteristics of flow and space throughout the duo's dance that coupled with the music to create imagery of a couple struggling to find strength in their relationship. I felt that the dance was extensively dependent on the music, specifically the lyrics. As the repetition of the lyrics began, the dancers began the repeat similar movements; for example, when the lyrics repeat "slip, slip, slipping down", the dancers physically slip away from each other as when she slowly slides to the floor only to be caught by his grasp. The music coupled with the lyrical movements of the dance made me feel as if the dance was telling a story of a couple. The music starts with a smooth swaying rhythmic feel steadily intensifying as the dance progresses. The movements of the duo matched the music starting smooth and steady but becoming sharp and direct in certain aspects of the dance, such as when he holds her in his arms almost as if she is lifeless and swaying to the music; however, in contrast later as the beat picks up, her movements are direct with sharp angular lines of her legs as she separates from her partner. I feel like the music allowed them to tell a story of a couple passionately in love but struggling to continue on. The intimate nature of the dance and consistent push and pull effect from the dancers alludes that they are in a relationship. The entire dance the couple is intertwined with each other, slipping away separately but pulled back in by the partner, until ultimately he slips through her grasp as he forcefully pulls away leaving her lying on the floor. Throughout the majority of the song, the dancers expressed free flow such as when they began the dance with wave like motions of their arms intertwined with the beat of the music. The fluidity of the movements continued as the male dancer lifted the female into the air and across his shoulders, she then slid down him as if her body was free and he was in control. The movements are lightweight and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. My First Dance Essay Dance Is My Life and Forever It Will be The day I tried out for my first dance was one of the most exciting and terrifying days ever. I had been in dance classes before then but never on a team like this. This team competed, traveled, and performed at halftimes for basketball and football games. I couldn't wait to try out but, was worried I wouldn't make the team. I new there were girls better than me that had tried out the previous years. My best friend kaybree was also trying out for hey team the same year, we were both hoping that we would get to dance together on the competing team. When I got home from tryouts I couldn't wait to see if it made the competing team. Once my couch ,Crista, posted the results on the Dance Unlimited door rushed and told my mom to check and see what team I made. I was sure I made the team I wanted but, when she checked she say that I had made the performance team instead of competing team. As soon as she told me I was little disappointed but excited that I made one of the teams. I couldn't wait to see want team KayBree made! I called her to see what team she made, as soon as she answered She shouted "what team did you make?" I answered "performance team what team did you make?" • 19. Dance Critique The traits I have obtained from dance can best be explained through the lessons I have experienced. The most valuable lesson is that critiques can either damage or improve someone; the amount of change the critique makes is for the receiver to choose. Dancing teaches that I will always be making mistakes, but a positive mindset is key. To grow as a dancer, I must respectfully listen to the critiques and make a valid effort to improve, not only for myself, but also for the team. Dancing has shaped me into a confident, determined person that will be able to apply lessons learned throughout my life. Teamwork is the most important trait when having a team that wants to excel at their sport, and I believe at Chilton, we go beyond the expectations. To work as a team, you must have a certain bond with each teammate to feel comfortable enough to correct them if something they are doing is incorrect. Something I really stress to the freshman on the team is that they should feel comfortable to telling me what I am doing wrong, even if I am a senior. To help the team, everyone must take part and be a leader in their own ways, whether it be teaching a girl choreography she missed or improving their own leaps. These skills learned from dance can be ...show more content... By getting my chance to be a captain this year, I had to step up to be someone the girls would look up to and respect. My current leadership qualities have not always appeared due to my introverted personality, but by maturing, it has been easier to provide advice and guidance to others regarding tasks that I have struggled with in the past. My growth from being a shy freshman to a supportive, focused senior has been a true transformation that has helped me become more active in Chilton High School extracurriculars, and will also aid me in succeeding in higher education by making it easier to cultivate personal connects with Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. Dance Criticism Elements In the book Writing Dance in the Age of Postmodernism, Sally Banes offers four examples of dance criticism. Banes says, "a writer must tell what the dancer did, what they communicated, and how remarkable that was" (24). To do so, she reveals a dance critic can perform elements of description, interpretation, evaluation, and contextualization through their reviews. Interpretation appears to be the most appealing category within dance criticism. Interpretation encompasses what the dance means. Essentially, it is what the choreographer and dancers are trying to communicate with the audience. The category of interpretation can often be the most difficult to determine in dance and for me that is what makes it the most appealing aspect of dance criticism. Since movements don't come with a defined vocabulary, there is no guarantee of a clear communication of ideas between the choreographer and viewers. I think this is what makes a performance so particularly exciting for the viewer. The interpretive aspect of dance allows the viewer to actively participate in the performance. In relation to their own personal experiences, they can bend what they see according to what they know and in some instances may learn something new about the world or themselves through the dance performance. Banes offered a good example by Jack Anderson that I was enthralled by (28). Anderson applied such connotation to the description of the performance. I am able to read the review and can bring it to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
