Cancer
What is cancer? Cancer is the abnormal and uncontrolled growth of cells that if left untreated can
ultimately cause death. The word cancer came from the Greek word for crab, karkinos. The early
Greek physicians who first described cancerous tumors had no notion of their cause or true nature,
but they were struck by the resemblance if some invasive tumors to crabs: a hard mass with a claw
like extensions and an aggressive nature. Cancer causes about 550,000 deaths a year. Although
many people believe that cancer is one disease, there are actually in fact over a 100 different forms
of cancer. Some cancers can be cured, but not all of them have cures. Even though each type has its
own characteristics, all cancers share one...show more content...
The first form of cancer I am going to talk about is Breast Cancer. This is one of the most common
cancers found in women and also has caused almost the same amount of deaths in women as lung
cancer. Breast cancer can also occur in men, but it rarely does. In the United States, about one out
of every nine women will develop breast cancer during her lifetime. Breast cancer increased
during the 1980's but now appears to have leveled off; each year about 175,000 American women
are diagnosed with breast cancer. Although death rates declined during the early 1990's, about
44,000 women die from breast cancer each year. Less than 1% of breast cancer cases occur in
women under the age of 30, but a women's risk doubles every 5 years between the ages of 30 and 45
and then increases by 10–15% every 5 years after the age 45. More than 75% of breast cancer is
diagnosed in women over 50.
**"The way breast cancer behaves varies greatly. Cancer may stay confined to the breast for years,
or it might spread to the nearby lymph nodes or even more distant areas before there is even a
detection of a lump. The most common type of early breast cancer begins in the cells lining the
ducts of the breast. The ducts connect the milk–producing glands to the nipple. Less often, cancer
begins in milk–producing tissue, which is made up of lobes and smaller sections called lobules.

People tend to usually tremble when hearing the unpleasant word "Cancer". Imagine being the one
diagnosed with this horrible illness. More and more people in today's society are struck with certain
health issues such as diabetes, obesity, heart diseases and many more. Cancer is the at the top of this
horrible chain of problems. Based on my experiences, someone that is diagnosed with cancer, does
not realize how life can change so rapidly for them. Their whole lifestyle changes and they have a
different outlook on life. Not until a person experiences a family member going through cancer, is
he/she able to understand how important spending time with family really is. I got the news that
my aunt, Andrea, a close family member was diagnosed with cancer during the month of July,

age of 63. Her house was flooded and both of her dogs...show more content...

surreal. Who would have imagined that someone you were so close with would have to face this
battle. When a family member gets diagnosed with this you are lost for words, and feel as if
nothing you say or do will help the situation. She is still undergoing chemotherapy and numerous
hospital visits, but keeps a positive attitude through it all. One day she said "I think cancer is a
blessing, everyone should experience it once in their lifetime to understand how precious life
actually is." That just shows how well she keeps her positivity through all of this. Andrea reminds
herself everyday that she is going to be just fine and that she is blessed with an amazing family and
friends that support her. She is aware that cancer can taking over her body, but she is still living life

women? Tobacco and Alcohol use is the leading cause of this type of cancer. In this essay, I will
be talking about Esophageal cancer. I will cover the topics of what it is, causes of the disease,
how to treat it, how to prevent it, and the many effects it has on your body. Cancer is a disease that
no one wants, but it is a disease everyone is willing to fight if it means getting your life back. What
is esophageal cancer? Well, esophageal or esophagus is the tube that connects the throat to the
stomach. The cancer starts in the inner layer and continues to grow outward. There are two types of
esophageal cancer. The first one is Squamous Cell Carcinoma. The second type is Adenocarcinoma.
Squamous is a cell in the body that are thin and flat and they look like fish scales. They are found
in the tissue of the body and they form the surface of the skin and is a lining on the hollow organs
of the body and of the respiratory digestive tracts. Squamous cell carcinoma can be located on
anywhere on the esophagus, but it is mostly found in the neck area and upper chest cavity.

Cancer
Cancer is a disease in which cells grow out of control and invade, erode, and destroy normal tissue.
Damaged genes cause this development of cancer. These damaged genes are often a factor caused
by such things such as the environment, and can be influenced by inherited factors. As the very
early damaged cells divide they can evolve into a malignant cell population, and lose the control
mechanism that govern normal cell division. These malignant cells can then go on to form solid
tumours that start to destroy normal tissue. These can then spread to other parts of the body by
releasing these tumour cells. Once these cancer cells spread, they grow in other parts of the body and

These are known as mutagens. These carcinogens can cause errors, duplication or rearrangement in
DNA sequences that contribute to the progression of cancer. An example of a carcinogen is tobacco.
Tobacco smoke contains at least twenty carcinogens, which are known to cause lung cancer.
Age can be a factor when asked what causes cancer. This is because cancer becomes more common
as we get older. 85% of cancers are diagnosed in patients over fifty–five. This is because as we get
older we become more susceptible to some types of carcinogens. Age is also a cause as it takes a
long time for a cell to become cancerous, as there has to be a number of changes to the genes
within a cell, before it turns into a cancerous cell. Therefore the longer we live; the more time there
is for us to become susceptible to these mistakes in our genes.
Our genetics are also another cause of cancer. If we are born with one of these genetic mutations,
which can cause cancer, we are said to be genetically predipositional. This is known as many of the
genes that control cell growth, and DNA repair are associated with inherited cancer susceptibility.
The genes, which are susceptible to leading to cancerous mutations, are called proto–oncogenes.
They are called oncogens as the word "onco" means cancer. An example of this is the faulty genes,
BRCA1 and BRCA2. If a woman carries one of these genes, she is

6. Chemotherapy: A Treatment for Cancer Essay
There are many different type of cancers, there are also many different types of treatments. One of
the most known types of treatments would be chemotherapy. Chemotherapy can be used for a wide
range of different types of cancers and diseases, and each of the different types of cancers or
diseases require a different group, and sometimes order, of chemicals to properly treat the cancer or
disease. These chemicals include: Alkylating agents, Antimetabolites, Anthracyclines, Topoisomerase
inhibitors, mitotic inhibitors, corticosteroids, and more. Each of these drugs previously listed have
its own cancer type(s) or disease(s) that it can assist in treating. Some of these cancers include:

According to the oral cancer foundation, "Chemotherapy is the use of chemicals to destroy cancer
cells. Chemotherapy works by interfering with the cancer cell's ability to grow. It is one of the
three main methods utilized to treat cancer." With cancer being a potentially fatal disease it is
important to diagnose it as soon as possible. the oncologist have to study the chemicals used so
that they can determine what chemicals will treat the cancer or disease the best and what
chemicals can be mixed together without any major side effects. The drugs can be divided into
groups based on how they work, their chemical structure, and their relationship to other drugs.
Before chemotherapy the survival rate of people with cancer was lower. Cancer cannot be
eliminated by natural resources; however, there is a way for someone who has had it to prevent it
from coming back. It has been proven that if you get cancer it is likely to come back between 6 to
10 times. You can prevent this by eating healthy. By eating healthy you strengthen your immune
system allowing it to be able to fight and destroy the cancer cells living in your body. Chemotherapy
has helped society by helping save millions, maybe even billions of peoples' lives. In my opinion I
think that scientist, chemist, and oncologist

Any agent that causes cancer is called a carcinogen. Carcinogens are generally classified into three
groups– chemical, biological, and physical. Chemicals that cause cancer have many different
molecular structures and can be just about any type of chemical. Some substances that cause
cancer are complex chemicals and gases, certain metals, drugs, hormones, substances in molds and
plants and many more. Many nitrosamines, or simple organic oxides of nitrogen, are
carcinogenic. That and hydrocarbons are carcinogens in cigarette smoke and increase the risk of
lung cancer. Also another chemical gas, vinyl chloride, gas has been found to be an agent of
sarcoma of the blood vessels in the liver. Many drugs as well as alkylating agents used to treat
cancer are carcinogenic. Even though these chemicals break the DNA of cancerous cells, which kills
them, it also induces cancer in normal cells. Some hormones created in humans can also cause cancer.
High levels of estrogen, which is marked as a female hormone, can increase the chances of getting
a cancer of the uterus (in women). Aflatoxin B is a substance produced by the mold Aspergillus
that causes a number of cancer, but generally liver cancer. Many carcinogens have not been
discovered but research is being done to discover other carcinogens to keep people aware and safe.

Cancer Cancer is a disease that can change the life of a person no matter their age or nationality.
Cancer can range from being life threatening to a low risk of death. Cancer cells are cells that do
not follow the regular cell growth and division pattern. They go through cell division and produce
rapidly. Cancer cells differ from regulating cells in the body because normal cells eventually die.
Cancer cells, on the other hand, do not die when they should causing it to be very hard to cure
cancer in your body. One thing I learned in researching cancer is that in order for cancer to appear
in our body it has to avoid being detected by our immune system. The cancer cells have to avoid
being detected by the immune system because if they are detected the immune system will try and
fight off the abnormality. If your immune system does not detect the abnormality in cells, the cancer
cells will grow and reproduce causing cancer to spread rapidly. The cancer cells that are not
detected they can create colonies and spread rapidly. There are many ways that you can get cancer.
You can get cancer from smoking, sunlight, your diet, mold, viruses, and inheritance. Out of those

Skin Cancer
What is it and how to prevent it
Skin cancer is the most prevalent of all cancers. There are three types of skin cancer: basal cell
carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma. In this presentation I plan to discuss
a little about each of these cases as well as tell ways to prevent and treat them. The first most
common skin cancer is basal cell carcinoma. This cancer develops in the basal or bottom layer of
the epidermis, which is the top layer of the skin. The cause of this cancer is a gene called patched
or PTC, which helps to control cell growth and development. If this gene is missing, defective, or
damaged by ultra violet radiation, unrestrained cell proliferation may result. Basal cell...show more

About 48,000 new cases are diagnosed annually in the United States. About 7,700 people die
from this disease each year. Melanoma may suddenly appear without warning but it may also
begin in or near a mole or other dark spots in the skin. The most important step you can make is to
have any changing mole examined by a dermatologist so that any early melanoma can be
removed while still in the curable stage. Heredity can also play a role since a person has an
increased chance of developing melanoma if a family member has had melanoma. Warning signs
of melanoma include: changes in the surface of a mole, scaliness, oozing, bleeding or the
appearance of a new bump, spread of pigment from the border into surrounding skin, and change in
sensation including itchiness, tenderness, or pain. In conclusion, skin cancer is a danger to all
whom work or dwell in the sun while at its peak. To prevent skin cancer of any kind, the Skin
Cancer Foundation recommends that people avoid the sun at its peak, which is from10am–4pm. Use
sunscreen regularly. Any skin changes or abnormalities should be reported to a physician. In the
event that you do develop skin cancer, there are surgical methods used to remove cancerous tissue.
In some cases tissue is destroyed through the application of intense cold or cryosurgery. In advanced
cases, surgical removal of tissue along with radiation, chemotherapy, or both may be

10. Introduction and Conclusion to Cancer
1.What Is Cancer?
CANCER, a 6 letter word that makes our world upside down.
Cancer is not just one disease, but a large group of almost 100 diseases. Its two main characteristics
are uncontrolled growth of the cells in the human body and the ability of these cells to migrate from
the original site and spread to distant sites. If the spread is not controlled, cancer can result in death.
2.How does cancer occur? The body is made up of trillions of living cells. These cells grow, divide,
and die in an orderly fashion. This process is a tightly regulated one that is controlled by the DNA
machinery within the cell. When a person is a baby or a child or within his or her mother's womb,
cells divide rapidly to allow for growth. After the person...show more content...
* Likelihood of recurrence – Benign tumors seldom occur after surgery, whereas malignant tumors
recur much more commonly. Surgery to remove a malignant tumor is more difficult than surgery
for a benign tumor. Using the fingerlike analogy above, it is much easier to remove a tumor that
has a clear fibrous boundary than a tumor that has penetrated nearby tissues with these fingerlike
projections. If cells are left over from these fingers, the tumor is more likely to come back. *
Systemic effects – Malignant tumors are more likely to have systemic, or total body, effects than
benign tumors. Due to the nature of these tumors, symptoms such as fatigue andweight loss are
common. Several types of malignant tumors also secrete substances that cause effects on the body
beyond those caused by the original tumor. An example of this is the paraneoplastic syndrome
caused by some cancers, resulting in a wide array of physical symptoms from hypercalcemia (an
elevation of calcium in the blood) to Cushing's syndrome(which in turn causes symptoms such as
rounding of the face, stretch marks and weakened bones). * Death toll – Benign tumors cause around
13,000 deaths per year in the United States. The number of deaths that can be blamed on malignant
(cancerous) tumors is over 575,000.

Genetic Changes and Cancer
Cancer is a genetic disease caused by certain changes to genes that control the way our cells
function, especially how they grow and divide. Genes carry the instructions to make proteins, which
do much of the work in our cells. Certain gene changes can cause cells to evade normal growth
controls and become cancer. Genetic changes that promote cancer can be inherited from our parents
if the changes are present in germ cells, which are the reproductive cells of the body (eggs and
sperm). Such changes, called germline changes, are found in every cell of the offspring. In general,
cancer cells have more genetic changes than normal cells. But each person's cancer has a unique
combination of genetic alterations.
Inherited genetic mutations play a major role in about 5 to 10 percent of all cancers.Researchers
have associated mutations in specific genes with more than 50 hereditary cancer syndromes, which
are disorders that may predispose individuals to developing certain cancers. Genetic tests can tell

I think that everybody should do a genetic test at a very early age in order to know what is going
on with their genes. Even if a genetic test is positive, a genetic counselor, doctor, or other health care
professional trained in genetics can help an individual or family understand their test results. These
professionals can also help explain the incidental findings that a test may yield, such as a genetic
risk factor for a disease that is unrelated to the reason for administering the test, so they can clarify
the implications of test results for other family members. Doing a genetic test is crucial because on
an expanded panel, certain cancer can be entirely reversed with an early intervention like dietary

As one of the most prevalent causes of death globally, cancer has been a main focus for bioengineers.
While it is understood that, to treat cancer, malignant tissue must be resected, many issues arise
when these tumors are not removed thoroughly, when the tumors are not determined accurately, or
when more time has passed for the cancer to spread to other parts of the body. Currently, there are
various technologies and applications that are being researched such as the application of
microfluidic devices (Han, Park and Kim). Many of these emerging technologies are important to
continue studying and developing for numerous biomedical applications, including cancer diagnosis.
While there are various technologies and applications that are currently being studied, many of these

Although bacteria can colonize tumors and have been used in successful human trials in cancer

Alongside these high quantities runs the risk of higher levels of toxic exposure for the patient.
There has yet to be a successful administration process that will be agreeable with patients and will
cooperate with the already existing clinical methods of cancer treatment. Therefore, the main issue
is to be able to administer the bacteria directly into the bloodstream in lower concentrations. The
article proposed using various strains of probiotics administered orally to selectively colonize

Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells. If the
spread of these abnormal cells is not controlled, cancer can cause death. Most cancers take the form
of tumors, although not all tumors are cancers. A tumor is simply a mass of new tissue that serves
no physiological purpose. It can be benign, like a wart, or malignant, like cancer. Benign tumors are
made up of cells similar to the surrounding normal cells and are enclosed in a membrane that
prevents them from penetrating neighboring tissues. They are dangerous only if their physical
presence interferes with bodily functions. A malignant tumor, or cancer, is capable of invading
surrounding structures, including blood...show more content...
These symptoms are not always warning signs of cancer. They can also be caused by less serious
conditions. It is important to see a doctor if any of these symptoms occur. Only a doctor can make a

Observation is the most widely available examination for the detection of cancer. It is useful in
identifying suspicious lesions in the skin, lip, mouth, larynx, external genitalia and cervix. The
second most available detection procedure is palpation. It is particularly valuable in detecting lumps,
nodules, or tumors in the breast, mouth, salivary glands, thyroid, subcutaneous tissues, anus, rectum,
prostate, testes, ovaries and uterus and enlarged lymph nodes in the neck, axilla or groin.
Internal cancers require an extension of observation through endoscopes, x–rays, magnetic resonance
imaging, and ultrasound. Laboratory test, such as the Pap smear, and occult blood testing of the
feces have also proven helpful for some of the cancers. However, concerns regarding effectiveness
and yield play a particularly important role in decisions to screen for cancers not easily responsive to
earlier detection through physical examination. The performance of these tests is usually measured
in terms of sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values. The type, periodicity,

It is estimated that cancer will cause the death of 7.6 million people worldwide in this year alone.
Another 4.4 million people will find out that they have the disease but are not expected to die
because of it. Cancer cells either continuously reproduce uncontrollably or do not die when they are
supposed to. These cancer cells can then spread, or metastasize, throughout the body. Cancer cells
can metastasize in the human body through blood circulation, lymph node spread, and
micrometastases. Cells can enter small blood vessels and get into the bloodstream. Cancer cells that
do that are called circulating tumor cells. The circulating blood sweeps up cancer cells as the blood

It can also trap damaged or harmful cells such as cancerous cells. Most cells that go through the
lymph system after being broken off are killed. The cells that survive can settle in a new area and
grow, forming new tumors. The spread of cancer cells throughout the body by lymph node spread
is another example of metastasizing. Micrometastases is when the cancer spread or metastasize is
to small to see. Some of these types of cancers can be detected by blood samples but they cannot be
discovered on any type of scan. If a doctor finds or thinks that it is likely that micrometastases are
present, extra measures such as chemotherapy will have to start being taken. The aim to to get rid
of any of the cancerous cells before they are even large enough to discover on a scan. All three of
the cancer spreads listed above are extremely dangerous. It is bad enough when someone has cancer
in just one prat of their body. When they find that it has moved and expanded to other areas, it it just
devastating. Pathologists need to know about all of the different types of metastases so that they can
better assess the situation and try to keep the cancer from spreading. This is because the pathologist
is the one who actually diagnoses the cancer, a regular doctor does not. Either way, understanding
how cancer spreads through the body can increase the likelihood that the cancer could be contained

Causes of Cancer
Cancer is a non–inflammatory disease, which can be defined as abnormal cell divisions and
growth in a specific part of the living body. There are many different types of cancer, which are
classified and named according to the type of affected cells. In normal cases, each cell has
controllable limited growth and divisions in addition to limited life span. When this life span
completed, the cell will die. In cancer cell (abnormal cell), the cell growth become out of control
with unlimited divisions, and this cell does not die. The continuous abnormal division of cancerous
cell will form cancer mass. The cancerous cell can invade the neighbor cells or tissues in the body,

2.The Age
There is a positive relationship between age and cancer formation. The old people are more
susceptible to have cancer than the young people because they have weak immune systems, and they
also have been exposing to cancer–causing agents more than the young people and children.
Although the age and cancer are positively related, it is not necessarily that each old person will
have cancer.
3.Life styles and bad habits
There are many factors that could be included in bad life styles and habits, and may cause cancer.
The most harmful agents are tobacco and alcohol. There is no doubt that tobacco–smoking and
alcohol–drinking people may have cancer during their life. Some specific cancer types are mostly
related to tobacco and alcohol consumption (such as mouth, esophagus, stomach, lung, liver, and
kidney cancer), but this doesn't mean that tobacco and alcohol cause just these types of cancer, or
these types of cancer occur as a result of the consumption of these materials. Obesity and exercises
are another risk factors that may lead to cancer. People who are obese or do not exercise become
more susceptible to cancer because these factors can affect the immune and the endocrine systems.

showed that exposure to single weak–estrogen compounds isn't a big risk but a combination of two
or more chemicals result in extremely high estrogenic
chemicals. Many women, who took diethylstilbestrol (DES) to prevent miscarriages, increased the
risk for breat cancer in their children.
There are lost of ways to prevent cancer or try to prevent it. One of these is reducing your fat
intake. One study shows that the result of this is that the level of estrodiol, the potent form of
estrogen decreases. Another way to fight breast cancer is to eat plenty of fruit and vegetables. Many
fruits and vegetables contain chemicals that may be cancer fighters. A concentrated form of
limonene, a substance found in citrus skins, has been found to shrink breast cancer in animals. Some
studies have shown that if you breast–fed for more than four months it lowers your risk of the
cancer. In a recent study women who have underwent breast reduction have a low risk of getting
