- Conventionally ID is a blend of key design principles such as Scale, Proportion, Symmetry, balance, rhythm etc.., Functionality, Aesthetics ; Whereas GI, in addition to balancing these three features, Consciously focusing on Environment Aspects; Today, we will discuss them in detail; There are four key aspects vizâŠ.
- Concern for people Materials that we choose are softer on nature Energy efficient interiors & water use optimisation; When we take progress report in college, People may do exceedily well in maths, still if they fail in any language they will not be promoted; Similarly there should be holistic approach towards green & projects should meet all the four requirements; Materials: Only Ideas Tiles â recycled tiles (1) Wood based materials â composite / certified wood;(2) Paint â low VOC paints; Water fixtures â look for this numbers; Concept of sun pipes â try to bring light Salvaged materials-Avani Energy Efficieny Always buy BEE rated appliances- energy differenc slide; Bring bring daylighting â large wwr, orientation; Lighting design â connected lighting 0.4 W/sq.ft or lower; Do away with GLFS lamps- global trend LED - Viswashyama IAQ; Paints To extent possible â avoid carpets- go for bamboo products If carpet cannot be avoided -Recycled carpets which do have adhesives; Insist on good exhaust; 50 CFM in toilets & 100 CFm in kitchen; Burning happens in kitchen â carbon is deposited- your exhaust extremely based on sq.ft; Cross Ventilation- Plan / Sketch; Indoor plants â which can take away the toxins; Design Aspects: Daylight proportional Colors; Jalli walls; Donât obstruct windows with storage spaces; Western/ Southern- Better glass / Shading devices/glass will also reduce sound db; address issue of noise; House towards the road side â acoustics will be importance; Blinds â Cotton- rapidly renewable material; People use Hard wood compared to conventional â use wood which is 100 years old; so that we will not touch virgin forest; Paints- Can show VOC Nippon; -------------------
- The 2nd important concept is that Materials that we select for our interiors; Conventionally; We highly depend on virgin bldg materials & high embodied energy; This is because, we select Natural timber â teaks, beech's, oak, tiles, plywood, laminate , veneers, imported furniture & decorative light fixtures, furnishings; - lot of transportation cost involved; Contrast in GI; we select same materials, however, we give emphasis in selecting the materials which are having recycled content & reusable in nature; We select tiles with recylced content, MDF which has 30-40% recycled content, flyash concrete, cement; steel with default 25% recycled content; aluminum; gypsum etc.., which will ultimately resultant is less dependency on virgin materials; Nowadays, there are a plethora of materials for home interiors that are eco friendly in nature; Re-using an item is a good awy to start with when you want to opt for an eco friendly dĂ©cor scheme. Look for products made with sustainable, earth-friendly materials that combine functionality, style and eco-conscious thinking;
- Some innovation in reusing of materials include; Reusing bottle for vertical landscaping; pet bottles for partition, light fixtures etc.;
- Wood Applications are most common in our home interiors; We select natural timber â white beech, Sycamore, Oak, Burma teakâŠdo you believe, Teak trees requires 30-40 y to grow for maturity; White beech takes 20-30year and Oak tree takes 120 years for maturity; Also, for your info; during 1975-2000, we lost almost 610 million acres of forest; India lost 387 sq. km of forests between 2009-2011 as Forest Survey of India;
- Architects had a tough time accepting this in 2001 ITC, Wipro â Rs 75 L worth of junk material refurbished and re-used Reverence to old materials â in our psyche Not difficult to put this into practice What is required is the will power and determination

- Lets take each in details; The first one is a priority â Concern for people First comes to our mind is the Ventilation; Conventionally the kitchen & toilets are not priority for IAQ; If you can notice in your kitchen, we do lot of cooking, burning, use of lot of Oil, which ultimately results in carbon deposits on wall; Also give way to infections; Hence in order to eliminate â In GI, we give emphasis on exhaust system & forced circulation; As thumb rule⊠Can any one guess ? Which space in a home is impacted with bad Hygiene? Cooking Burning, Oil in cooking Foot Waste Vegetables Carbon deposits on the wall;
- The next thing is Paints; conventionally, the choice of paint is left to the painter & what he will do; Selects Lowest priced & nearest vendors; without knowing, occupants are prone to health effects; Also, we cannot occupy them the next day of paint or polish; Whereas GI; We can occupy the premises the next day of paint; Since the paint that we select is odour less, do not have health effects, paints are carefully selected with Low VOC; Thumb rule: for the best paints, the VOC is in the range of 50-100 g/L; When you buy paints next time, please check for VOC on the paint cans;
- Another issue in our homes is we require air purifiers in home; what we normally use is Sprays, Air Freshners; Which are detrimental to health â have risk of asthma, allergies to the people inside; Hence in GI, we recommend to use some selected indoor plants;
- Areca Palm; Snake Plant Money Plant â am sure more of them will be having this in their indoors;
- Cross Ventilation- the most imp aspect in a green home; often we have windows on one orientation and leave other walls for extra storage space & funiture; Whereas in GI; we give lot of emphasis to have openings in atleast two faces; This will enable the rooms get flushed naturally & always have fresh air ; This will enhance the occupant comfort & well being;
- Conventionally Interior Design focus on Functionally & Aesthetics Green ID; will take care of environment without any compromise on Functionality & Aesthetics;
