Prtotype and-test-improving efficiency of hiring process
1. Problem Statement
Very experienced, highly skilled Technical leader, trying to build a multidisciplinary
team of young engineers, Needs ways to Improve efficiency and efficacy of hiring
process, without compromising quality of hiring.
Ideas -
1. Use academic performance as first level shortlist
Background –Stakeholder has to spend lot of time scanning through resumes and arrive at a short list of
candidates to be called for interview.
2. Initial Prototypeof Idea
With this diagram I met the person I had interviewed last time . Described him the idea and asked for
his feedback. This is what he said.
StakeHolder :Well, we already follow this process. There is nothing new in this.
Me :Ok..I would like to try if I could try to improve it.
Me :You had told me last time that you have looked at 1000+ resumes so far and then had shortlist of
40. How much time do you spend going through each resume?
StakeHolder :Approx 5 mins or so.
Me :Ok..I am wondering if we could automate this process ?
StakeHolder : How ?
3. Me :Well, we can ask candidates to fill in their details on webpage. Based on the metrics you are
interested in, we can design a webpage to collect the needed information. Here is one example
Test Feedback
StakeHolder : Well but I am not sure how will it shortlist. Different grad schools may different academic
standards. Their rating may differ ? Also some candidates may have got good GPA because they took
easy courses
Me :Yes I understand. Let me come back to you with improved prototype.
I did couple of adjustments and went with improved idea
4. Basically I tried to address shortcomings that stakeholder had pointed out by adding another step
1. Web site just gathers data.
2. Processing of data is done at back end
3. The data processing engine is nothing but a filter
4. It will have interface for employer to choose filters. E.g I want to see resumes only from
standford
5. User can choose selection criteria by combining different metrics – Grad school, GPA, etc
Reflection : Do not wait for perfecting ideas. It is better to get quick feedback on
what you have. Most of the time, the feedback fromuser itself will provide you
more ideas.
