1. Identify your child’s strengths
It is important to take cognizance of the strengths of your child. While some children may do well in all the
academic subjects, other children may be inclined towards a select few. Each child is unique in that aspect.
It is important to identify what your child’s strengths are. Be appreciative of his/her strengths. This does not
mean that one does not pay attention to the weaknesses. However, highlighting the strengths will give your
child the energy and impetus to also work in overcoming weaknesses to the best of their ability.
Identifying strengths should also include character traits and extra-curricular activities that the child exemplifies
and is passionate about. This ensures that equal importance is also given to values and extra-curricular
activities in addition to academics.
2. Avoid comparisons and give priority to building up strengths
It is important to avoid making comparisons with other children and pressurizing children when they are not
performing in certain subjects to the expected level. Instead, accept the child for who she/he is.
If your child is good in art but is uncomfortable with mathematics, make sure that you take her/him to art shows,
etc., and even arrange special art classes for her/him. When you do this, your child will feel more comfortable
about attending a math tuition too and will feel more confident about improving in other areas.
It is important not to push them towards popular or conventional courses if their interests and strengths lie
elsewhere. By recognizing their strengths and encouraging them to further strengthen their skill sets, you will
help them to prepare themselves for a fulfilling future.
3. Study Tips for Academic Success
Studies become enjoyable if students are able to learn in a joyful manner. Studies are not meant to be
something to be dreaded or to be fearful of. The joy of learning can be enhanced only if students follow good
study habits. This will help them achieve academic success. Encouragement and a safe, nurturing and secure
learning environment are important for children. Self-confidence that one can overcome any challenge while
learning is an important aspect of the learning process. When a child first learns to walk, a child usually
stumbles and falls and then tries to take the first few steps again. In the same way, any learning process may
have a learning curve depending on the child’s uniqueness and prior experiences.
The following are a few study tips for academic success:
1. Fill all gaps while learning a concept: A child may not fully understand a certain concept due to certain
gaps in learning. If the teacher or parent helps the child by identifying the gaps, the child will be better
equipped to proceed further. Study modules including multimedia study modules will help the child
understand the concept better, fill gaps and review the concept. The child will then be ready to take on
more advanced concepts.
2. Study at a steady pace: Instead of rushing through loads of information, it is better for students to review
and revise topics at a steady pace. If they carefully study a topic and revise a topic the very first time it is
taught, they will be able to understand it better and will have better retention. Clarifying doubts will further
enhance their understanding of the topic. When they have to again review loads of information, they can
go at a slightly faster pace as they have taken the time to thoroughly study the topic during the initial
stages.
3. Importance of motivation and encouragement: Children may not have built up the required self-esteem
to be self-motivated. They may need the extra motivation and encouragement until they start believing in
themselves. It is important for parents and teachers to encourage students when they show progress and
improvement in learning. We all know of stories of people who overcame great odds due to their parents or
5

teachers undying belief in them. In fact, the great inventor Thomas Alva Edison was considered
unintelligent by his teacher. He was immediately pulled out of school by his mother and taught at
home. He began to blossom because of this. Thomas Alva Edison even said the following, “My mother
was the making of me. She was so true, so sure of me, and I felt I had something to live for, someone I
must not disappoint.” Helen Keller was lovingly guided by the empathetic mentor Anne Sullivan and is now
a source of inspiration to students the world over.
4. Make use of study techniques during study sessions: KWL, SQ3R and PQRST are three study
techniques that can be used to enhance study sessions. K stands for what I Know, W stands for what I am
Wondering about this and L stands for what I Learnt. SQ3R stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recite and
Review. PQRST stands for Preview, Question, Read, Summarize and Test. Check our earlier blog entries
for more details on these study techniques.
5. Review with the help of sample question papers and exercises: Sample question papers and exercises
give students sufficient practice to tackle any kind of question within the stipulated time.
6. Apply learning through practical and project-based learning: Certain theoretical aspects of learning
can be practically applied in real life. This will make learning more meaningful and enjoyable. For
example, student can write their own poems after learning about literary devices, design solar appliances
like a toy solar car, etc.
7. Do not stick to textbook learning alone: Go beyond the textbook and study the topic in depth. Learn
more about the topic through books in libraries, internet and also through practical and field experiences
and by meeting a variety of different people. Also, maintain your own study journal and work on your own
little practical projects.
4. Ways to get the formulae into your mind
Children always find it hard to get formulae right in their mind. When it comes to understanding formulae and
recalling them, there is a kind of hesitance which comes up. For some memorizing the formulae is easy, while
for others it can be a challenge. Challenge – yes, but nothing that it cannot be achieved. To help succeed in
this challenge, we have some tips that can help you get every formulae correct.
1. Pay attention to what is being taught in the classroom. This is the first time you are introduced to the
formulae and as such your brain is going to be eager to know more about it.
2. Read over and over again – go through the formula over and over again and it will retain in your memory.
This can be done by rote learning method, wherein irrespective of whether you understand the formula or
not, you will remember it.
3. Divide the formula into bits – if the formula is lengthy, divide the formula into pieces. Proceed by taking one
step at a time and you will find that the formula solves itself in your mind.
4. Associate – this is an easy trick which many of us use unconsciously. Break and associate the formula to
something which you are familiar with.
5. Relax before starting to understand the formulae – a calm and relaxed body will be able to grasp the
content in a much better way than a stressed and tired mind.
6. Put up notes in all the places where you can see – this is one well known method to get any information
imprinted in your memory. The more often you see them the better will be the impression of that particular
information.
Apart from all these tips, it is also required that you eat and sleep well and keep your body hydrated at all
times. As the old saying goes ‘a healthy mind in a healthy body’, one must be physically fit and strong enough
to be mentally strong.

5. Rote Learning Versus Meaningful Learning
Rote learning was one of the most prevalent methods of student
learning in India until recent education reforms. It still continues to be
a practice in some schools. Right from the primary level, teachers
merely dictated out pre-prepared questions and answers which
children wrote down in their note-books. Many students blindly
“mugged up” the questions and answers without properly
understanding the topics of study. The annual examination evaluated
students on how well they “mugged up” the questions and
answers. Will the critical thinking and innovative skills of students
improve in a rote learning environment?
Meaningful learning on the other hand involves thoroughly
understanding what is being studied. Meaningful learning also
involves making associations and relating new knowledge to prior
knowledge. It also involves analyzing, researching, reflecting,
discussing and then articulating learning in one’s own words. Meaningful learning ensures that students
are active participants in the learning process rather than mere passive recipients. Meaningful learning
also incorporates practical learning and “learning by doing” in the form of projects and assignments. In
addition to this, students are also involved in critical thinking and analysis of what is being studied. This
can involve processes like comparative analysis of pieces of literature, etc. Moreover, meaningful learning
encourages creativity and innovation. Students are inspired to do practical projects based on what they
have learnt through meaningful learning inputs. Rote learning on the other hand usually dulls the minds of
students, makes them passive and never helps them think beyond the status quo. The 21st
century skills
required in the postmodern information era includes critical thinking and creativity. Meaningful learning
helps learners think in a critical as well as creative manner. Rote learning was prevalent earlier because it
was an offshoot of Macaulay system of schooling during the British imperial era. The imperialists merely
wanted Indians and other world citizens to be cogs for their own vested interests and fit narrow clerical
roles. Even though after independence, the job scenario has expanded, educational reforms did not keep
pace with the changes. Recent changes in educational curricula and textbooks of various boards across
India reflect the march towards meaningful learning. This will ensure that students not only learn in a
meaningful manner but also attempt to live a more meaningful life.

6. Importance of Reading Biographies and Autobiographies
Reading biographies and autobiographies can be a great
source of inspiration to both young students and grown-ups
alike. They are testimonies to the resilience of the human
spirit. Many biographies and autobiographies of famous
personalities reveal that they achieved extraordinary heights
through perseverance. Just like each one of us, they had their
shares of ups and downs and also an underlying vision to make
this world a better place for all. Thomas Alva Edison, the great
scientist who invented the light bulb was considered “dumb” by his teacher. He was pulled out of school and
was home-schooled by his mother who believed in him and encouraged him. Thomas Alva Edison said the
following of his mother, ““My mother was the making of me. She was so true, so sure of me, and I felt I had
something to live for, someone I must not disappoint.” This shows what a difference an encouraging mentor
can make in a student’s or anyone’s life. His spirit of perseverance is best articulated in the following inspiring
quote of his, “I have not failed. I have just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” He was not bogged down by
failure and was not even sure about the outcome of his experiments. His passion, focus and determination
were what made him carry on. Another inspiring famous personality is Helen Keller. Her autobiography “The
Story of My Life” is very heartfelt with exquisite observations. Helen Keller also describes how Anne Sullivan,
her loving and kind mentor and teacher, helped her during her childhood and early days of youth in her journey
of learning and discovery as a visually and hearing challenged person. Helen Keller was able to courageously
strive on and became an inspiring lecturer and social activist and an icon not only for the visually and hearing
challenged but all human beings to persevere under any circumstance. Helen Keller’s inspiring quote, “The
best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched-they must be felt with the heart,”
reveal the importance of enduring human values like love, kindness and empathy which can only be felt deep
within a person and can never be experienced in a hollow or superficial manner. Nelson Mandela’s “Long Walk
to Freedom” is another extraordinary testament of someone who was imprisoned for 27 long years, but did not
let that shackle his inner spirit. Nelson Mandela walked out of prison after an unbelievable 27 years at the age
of 77 and later became the president of apartheid-free South Africa. He was able to forgive with an
extraordinary generosity of spirit and stand up for the ideals of liberty and democracy for which he and like-
minded people had to go through all sorts of ordeals against an oppressive apartheid regime. The spirit of
perseverance is beautifully summed up in the following inspiring quote by Nelson Mandela, “The greatest glory
in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.”

7. Time Management.
Time management is the key to doing well in academics. Good time management ensures that you will not
feel stressed during the CCE assessments. You will be able to enjoy your studies, and you can take it quite
easy during the assessments!
The following are a few time management tips:
1. Prepare a study time-table/planner:
Prepare a study time-table/planner stating when you will revise each concept taught for each subject. You can
prepare a study planner for each month. When you finish revising a concept, you can tick it and also add a little
star or anything else that keeps you going and even add some running commentary. Sometimes, you may finish
the revision earlier than planned, and sometimes, you may take some more time. That’s alright. Just add
tentative dates and times and make the time-table flexible.
2. Weekly review the study plan:
It is good to do a weekly check of the study plan to make sure that you are studying at a comfortable pace and
covering the portions at a steady rate. If you are able to manage your study time reasonably well in a week, you
can do wonders in a month. Also, make sure that you balance your study time with a good dose of extra-
curricular activities, rest and relaxation.
3. Prioritize, reinforce understanding and identify gaps:
Prioritize which concepts need to be studied first and for which subject. For most concepts, a second or even
third quick revision will be necessary for long-term retention. For math topics, you may need to practice and
keep at some type of problems until you are able to solve them with ease. If you are stuck, note down which
topics you do not understand clearly, note down questions and doubts. You can ask your teacher, parent or
seek the help of an expert tutor.
You can also read further on the topic on the internet or refer to books in the library. In this way, you will have
a thorough understanding of the topic. As far as possible, also try to learn a little more about the topic and look
at applying it in practical situations. Going beyond the textbook will ensure that you have a comprehensive
understanding of many topics.
Importance of Images and Multimedia in Improving Memory while
Studying
Memory is greatly enhanced with the help of images and
multimedia content. Imagine that a student is learning about a
topic like the “water cycle.” If the student read about the topic,
without any images, it would take longer for her/him to
remember the key points and processes involved in the water
cycle. With an image, memory is retained for a longer time,
and with multimedia content containing animations and voice-
overs, the student will be able to recall the processes involved
even months after they have studied the topic. The processes
involved in the water cycle like evaporation, condensation and precipitation will play in the mind’s eye of the
student. They will be able to visualize the entire process and also understand and explain it better during
assessments. As they have already watched an audiovisual regarding the topic several times including while
revising, remembering details and articulating their understanding will become easier. Images and multimedia
9
By: Pralhad & Padma DHUMAL
content help greater and faster retention and understanding of concepts when one has to consider the vast
syllabus and curricula that students have to cover for multiple subjects. They will also feel that studying is not
as monotonous a task as they are involved in watching animations and voice-overs which have been
meticulously prepared by academic experts. Children who use multimedia and audiovisual content while
studying have a greater and surer advantage of understanding concepts better and thus achieving top grades
in their academics. Parents, on watching their children learn in a more enjoyable and effective manner with the
help of multimedia content, have often expressed the view that they wished they had such tools while they
were learning. The multimedia content is designed in such a way that it is as interactive as possible. Thus,
this further ensures that memory retention of what is studied is higher. The multimedia content may also
include educational games that are not only fun but also ensure that students remember what is learnt for a
longer time in a fun and engaging manner. The adage “A picture is worth a 1000 words” can be multiplied a
thousand more times when one uses multimedia content for learning.
9. How to Increase Memory Power | Tips to Improve Memory
Memory is crucial to do well in academics and all aspects
of life. With a vast syllabus and curriculum, students have
to sift through a lot of information and articulate their
understanding on varied topics. Good memory skills and
an enhanced memory power are important for ensuring
that students stay on top of the syllabus and achieve good
grades.
How to Increase Memory Power | Tips to Improve Memory
The following are a few tips to keep in mind to increase memory power:
1. Improve memory by making associations: Studying, remembering and articulating on a wide range of
topics can be done in an effective manner by making associations. Ensure that you relate key points and
topics by making associations. For example, consider the study of the modern periodic table. It is
important to go through the elements in a group in a periodic table and see in what way they are associated
because they are grouped together. You can make an association such as elements in a group have the
same number of valence electrons. You will also find that the majority of elements are metals in the
periodic table and are towards the left. The non-metals are towards the right and separated by the metals
by a few metalloids in a zigzag pattern. Students can then make associations with the properties of metals,
non-metals and metalloids to ensure that they study the topic in-depth and remember key points and
details. Drawing your own rough mini periodic table, with a few relevant groups, valence electrons, atomic
numbers and position of metals, non-metals and metalloids also help in strengthening the associations
made. Visual aids and mind maps are memory-enhancing techniques to ensure that the associations
made stay long term.
2. Improve memory with the help of your imagination and creativity: Remembering important names,
dates, etc., can be done by using one’s imagination and creativity. This can make memorizing seemingly
monotonous facts and figures pretty interesting and fun too. For example, you can hum a patriotic tune as
you learn about some historical event, draw a few details, enact some scenes or even make up a nonsense
story and associate it with what you want to remember. Imagination and creativity form a huge part of
memory techniques and can make monotonous details fun to remember and then articulate.

10. Importance of Taking a Study Break | How to Take a Study Break
With examinations, tests and assessments forming a significant part of student
life, it is important that students take the much-needed study breaks in between
study sessions. Sometimes, they may find that study breaks keep on
extending. Here are a few suggestions regarding study
breaks. However, each student has to go by their own unique needs keeping in
mind certain suggestions and guidelines.
Importance of Taking a Study Break
A study break will rejuvenate the mind and ensure that concentration levels are maintained at optimum
levels. Without taking adequate breaks, fatigue will set in. The extra time spent studying will be wasted as the
student is not concentrating. Thus, study breaks are crucial for revising and studying in an effective
manner. At the same time, if students do not plan study breaks properly, they may end up spending more time
taking breaks than studying!
How to Take a Study Break
1. Prepare a study planner with study breaks included: Ensure that the study planner or study time-table
includes study breaks. For 40 minute study sessions, 5 to 10 minute breaks help rejuvenate the mind.
2. Allot a few hours per week for a complete break from study sessions: A few hours in a weekend or a
weekday can be spent simply relaxing or doing other hobbies apart from studying. This will ensure that
students are completely refreshed when they resume study sessions.
3. Get some fresh air and exercise during a study break: While taking a study break, students can go for a
short stroll and also go outdoors and get some fresh air.
4. Eat healthy food, avoid junk food and get adequate hydration: Eating healthy food, avoiding junk food
and getting adequate hydration are all important things to remember while taking a study break. Taking
care of one’s health is very important for enhancing concentration, so eating smartly and keeping oneself
hydrated is vital.
5. Avoid watching TV shows or napping during study breaks: Watching TV shows during study breaks
can be very distracting. Students will lose focus and will not be able to come back refreshed. Napping
during study breaks should also be avoided as students will become drowsier if they do that. Students
should ensure that they get sufficient sleep, at least 8 hours per day, so that they are not fatigued during
study sessions.

11. Why is it Important for Students to Learn about
Entrepreneurship?
What is entrepreneurship?
Entrepreneurship is the process of
forming an enterprise, business or
organization. It involves putting forward
a viable concept, product or business
model.
Why is it Important for Students to
Learn about Entrepreneurship?
Entrepreneurship and different business
models are a part and parcel of the
current society. It is important for
students to learn about the dynamics
involved in entrepreneurship in the
current scenario. All the products that
students see around them and the
human activity all around them is also largely due to the dynamics involved in entrepreneurship,
economic systems and different business models. Entrepreneurship and start-ups are buzz words in
today’s society. However, it takes a lot of planning, in-depth study, risk analysis, patience, a synergistic
team and adequate funding to establish a viable enterprise. With knowledge about entrepreneurship,
students can think of later starting their own start-up ventures. They can also think of ways of ensuring
that it is done in a humane and eco-friendly manner. By doing tiny entrepreneurial projects within a
small community, students can hone their entrepreneurial skills. Groups who are passionate about a
concept or product can get together and see how it can become a part of an entrepreneurial
establishment. For example, if a group is passionate about making eco-friendly toys for children, they
can brainstorm and implement the plan in the form of an entrepreneurship within a tiny community. In
this way, they will be able to hone their entrepreneurial skills and take it further accordingly. Students
can also join business incubator programs which focus solely on start-ups and new companies. In this
way, they will be able to get the support and practical expertise required to take their ventures forward.
By learning about entrepreneurship, students can empower themselves to deal with the complexities of
business ecosystems. They can also help establish more sustainable, humane and eco-friendly
ventures. Moreover, if students join an organization, they will have better understanding of the
complexities involved in the business culture that they are part of. Thus, learning about
entrepreneurship with ample importance given not only to theory but also practical experience will
ensure that students are well equipped to be part of the entrepreneurial revolution of the future.
12. Choosing the right supplementary study material for your child
Competition is everywhere and dominates academics more than anywhere else. One can find themselves
caught in the rat-race to excel in academics and also extracurricular. When it comes to academics, all parents
are very particular that their ward must score well. Till a couple of years back, books and teachers were the
only means by which a child could learn, but now that’s not the case anymore. There are many educational
service providers who have come up to help parents and students find supplementary learning materials to
enhance knowledge.
Supplementary learning materials help the child understand the concepts and topics in a better way through
animations, videos, activities etc. Not only will this enhance their knowledge, but also makes it a convenient
12
By: Pralhad & Padma DHUMAL
way to learn. Let us first understand the various supplementary learning materials that are available in the
market.
1. CDs and DVDs – one of the most commonly found products in the market are the CDs and DVDs. One can
find them for every class, subject and Board of education. One has to be very careful while choosing the
same because of the quality of content in the products. Choose the company that is well established in the
educational services sector.
2. Worksheets and workbooks – these are mainly aimed to help children in the lower classes(KG1-Class4)
to improve their spellings, reading, ease of a particular topic etc. These are printed in bright attractive colors
to please the child. One can also find puzzles and color it pages to keep the children interested in them.
3. Online tutoring – yes, you can consider this also as one of the supplementary learning materials available
for children. This is similar to tuitions conducted in a coaching center, except that the child does not have to
move out of the comfort of their home to learn. Sitting at home a child can get help with any academic
related query.
4. Online tests – this is yet another product that many service providers have developed. Children can check
their understanding of a particular concept/topic by taking up tests in the same. There are many online tests
available that cater to the students’ individual needs.
It might look like very few products are available as supplementary learning materials, but due to their vast
nature (class, subject, board of education) one can come across hundreds of them in the market. It can also be
seen that a couple of the service providers who have established themselves, do not market their products in
the free market. Instead they encourage purchasing their products online through their website, making it easy
for customers to buy.
13. Surya Namaskar for better score in academics
Surya Namaskar- the name translates to salutation to the sun and is being followed by us from a very long
time. India, being a land of many traditions and beliefs, we follow many practices which are aimed at improving
our inner-self. One such practice is Surya Namaskar, which helps us revitalize and relax ourselves.
Students all over the country are busy in their preparation for the upcoming exams. They are stressed out and
would be happy to know about some methods by which they can relax, improve concentration and also boost
their spirits up. One of the easiest ways is by practicing Surya Namaskar on a daily basis. Surya Namaskar is a
combination of 12 different postures (asanas) that is very well described in ancient yoga.
Surya Namaskar is usually done at the start of the day, which is very relaxing to everyone who performs it. It is
considered as a mild exercise to start the day with. So what does this Surya Namaskar do? With every session
of Surya Namaskar, one can find that it lowers the stress level of a person, increases concentration (meditation
is a part of this session), reduces anxiety in students, removes fear and improves self-esteem of a person. All
this, of course, does not come with practicing just for a day. These sessions must be regularly practiced and
followed to be able to reap the benefits.
14. Increase confidence during exam
Exams give away a fear that hampers a student’s confidence. I find many students complaining of losing their
confidence just a few days before the exams and wanting to know of ways to get their confidence up and
running again. Regaining the lost confidence is possible by introducing a couple of changes in your study.
Here are some changes that can help you build your confidence and score better during the exams.
1. Practice previous years’ question papers – yes, taking a look at the question papers of past years and
working on them can help you understand the pattern that is being followed. Also, one can know the
frequently asked questions from certain topics, making them important in your study schedule. For
example: In science, one knows that by default the diagram of a flower, heart or kidney is commonly asked
(this depends on the class, so I am being generic).
2. Time your tests – every time you work on a concept, timing it would help you understand where you stand,
in terms of understanding and recalling of the same. Also, in subjects like mathematics, it helps you build
your strength on the concepts and also completing the exams within the stipulated time.

3. Give yourself mock tests – giving yourself mock tests will not only increase your understanding of the
subject, but also your confidence.
4. Eat, sleep and breaks – the most important part of preparing for the exams involves in eating well,
sleeping up to 7hrs and taking appropriate breaks while studying. While many consider that continuous
studying is the only way to success, they are wrong. The body burns more energy while studying, because
most of what we eat is being used up by the brain to process and retain the information. It is therefore
necessary that you eat well for your brain, give it enough rest and breaks.
5. Do not think too much about the exams – there is nothing to think about the exams constantly. Relax.
Exams are a means to judge your understanding of the subjects and concepts and therefore the more you
think about it, the more you will seem to forget all that you have studied.
Exam tension, exam anxiety or nervousness is all part of growing up. Most of this feeling comes from our
mindset and pressure that comes from our family and teachers. Try to keep this at bay and you will do fine in
your exams.
15. Last minute exam prep tips
Exams are a means to judge ones’ understanding of the concepts that is being learnt over a period of time.
This is also a time when students are more anxious about the various elements that surround the exams –
topics to be covered, revision to be completed, previous years’ papers to be looked at etc.
For many, last minute study works, while for a few others the last minute study schedule only causes anxiety.
Students must start well ahead of time, but with time flying fast, it is of no use to look back on the lost time.
Here are some tips to help prepare well in the last minute of exams.
1. Relax – your body requires twice as much rest for last minute prep. It is therefore important that you have
sufficient rest before even thinking about your studies and exams. The more you think about your exams,
the more you are going to be tensed, therefore stop thinking about it and concentrate on your studies.
2. Mental preparation – a strong mind can help in dealing with tension and last minute preps easily. Any
student must mentally prepare himself/herself to study well with an aim of scoring better.
3. Time in hand – keeping the time in hand, prepare yourself a schedule which can help you give time for all
the tasks and subjects equally. Do not forget to give time for breaks in your schedule as this will give your
mind the time to recall all that you have studied.
4. Study notes – every time you study or go through a concept, quickly make a note of it in the way you can
understand better. Not only will this information be imprinted in your memory, but also help you revise at a
later date.
5. Eat healthy – there are certain foods which can help you stay active and enhance your memory, while
carbohydrate rich foods can put you to sleep. Choose the right kind of food that can help you stay active
throughout your study period.
6. Listen to the concepts – another best way to cover a lot of concepts in a short time frame is to listen to
them. These days, there are CDs available in the market which is specifically designed to meet the
student’s needs (such as our own Edurite Scoremore CDs) and can help in better retaining of information.
Constant listening can help imprint the same in the memory.
7. Check for important topics – teachers will always be able to guide students on some of the important
topics. Be sure to make a note of them and give it a little extra time.
8. Previous year’s papers – previous year’s papers will help students reduce the anxiety that arises with
every exam. Not only will this be able to give you a brief idea of the structure, but also helps you reduce the
anxiety.
Last minute preparation is never advisable to any student, unless there has been an unavoidable
circumstance.

16. Fixing a fight
All of us have friends who we consider as the best people to share our thoughts and feelings. Not always is a
relationship with a friend filled with fun and excitement. There can also be a time when friends have a fight,
resulting in pain and hurt which one is unable to tolerate. Fights between friends are normally resolved in a day
or two and is always a good idea to do the necessary to maintain that bond.
Here are a few ways to fix a fight with your friend.
1. Write a note to your friend, enquiring about them; send a nice card, bunch of flowers etc to let your friend
know that you are thinking about him/her. This makes for a good start to fix the fight.
2. Understand the reasons that caused you and your friend to fight. There must be some reason which
provoked a fight, resulting in a healthy relationship being spoiled. If you find that you are at fault, apologize
to your friend. Friends usually forgive each other.
3. Talk to your friend after the fight, putting the fight behind you. A simple hug or hand shake means that there
you want to move ahead. Most of us prefer to forget about the fights which take place and move forward.
Friends too would love to move ahead, without any grudge or feelings of revenge.
4. If the fight has caused deep harm, then it’s important that you talk about it with your friend. The only way to
move ahead without any negative feelings or bad thoughts is to talk about it and resolve the issue. Explain
how you have felt and how much it has hurt you and also seek clarifications (if needed) on why this
happened. If the other person is a really valuable friend, then he/she will help you understand their point of
view, after which you will feel relaxed.
All of us have had fights with our friends. The earlier it is resolved, the better it becomes to move ahead.
17. Fight between parents can result in harming the child
One of the most stressful periods in a child’s life is when his/her parents fight. It is always said that a parent-
child bond is a very important element in the proper development of the child. Constant fight between parents
can result in harming the child’s development.
Many parents do not realize the effects that their fights can have on children. It is only when the situation gets
out of hand that they realize. Here’s how it affects the child.
1. Fight among parents usually results in irritation and controlling attitude towards the child. The controlling
attitude leads to the parents being unfair to the child in terms of discipline and upbringing, where their view
is expressed as the best one.
2. Children become very sensitive towards their parents’ fights, getting them to be withdrawn from the person.
3. Children are neglected and avoided as a result of parents’ fights. Parents seem to be engrossed in matters
of their fights that they fail to realize the needs of their children.
4. Constant fights between parents leads to insecurity feelings in the child. The feeling of a parent leaving
them is the reason for the insecurity.
5. Children become more prone to violence and anger. Since they are surrounded by an atmosphere of
negative thoughts, the same creeps over them, making them vulnerable to violence.
Children do not have any hard feelings against their parents and they only want an environment of love and
care to be showered on every member of the family. This sweet feeling is crumpled down with constant fights,
which parents must try to avoid.

18. Importance of Taking a Break from Technology
Technology has become all pervasive. Children are very
tech-savvy and love gadgets. Many of the adults around
them also seem to be addicted to technology. When
students go to school, they are increasingly being taught
through smart boards. They use desktops and laptops at
home to enhance their learning. The benefits of
technology in learning are many and help children learn in
a fun and engaging manner. However, it is also important
to take a break from technology and rediscover life’s
simple joys.
The following are a few things that parents and children can rediscover by taking a short break from
technology:
1. Connecting with natural surroundings: When children and parents visit natural surroundings without any
gadgets, they will be able to observe and tune themselves to natural wonders in an enhanced
manner. They will also be spending more time building their camaraderie with their friends or family
members.
2. Family bonds get strengthened: If parents are continually checking emails or browsing through a website
or on the mobile phone at home, they will not be able to give the required attention to their child. If they
are addicted to technology, taking a technology break will ensure that they slowly achieve a balance and
use technology more judiciously. They will be surprised to find that family bonds are strengthened and that
they have great moments with their child.
3. Discovering new hobbies: Children will be able to discover new hobbies like singing, dancing, sports and
art if they take a break from technology. The time spent playing a game on the tablet or doing activities
through digital media will be spent discovering interesting hobbies without an overdose of technology. By
taking a technology break, children will be able to have a more balanced set of hobbies.
4. Spending more time outdoors and playing outdoor games: Taking a break from technology will also
ensure that children spend more time outdoors. They will discover the good old running games and also
spend their time with neighborhood friends. After the technology break, they will find that they are not
spending as much time indoors playing video games. They will enjoy outdoor sports and games and
become healthier.
19. Encouraging Students to Learn in the Midst of Nature
Encouraging students to learn in the midst of nature and
revere nature will help them develop a lifelong spiritual
connection with Earth. This will help them in their overall
health and well being. It will also help them to grow spiritually,
mentally and emotionally. It is important to take students on
nature walks and to botanical gardens and parks. Identifying
the different flora and fauna that grow in a particular ecosystem
can also be part of the nature walk. This will help them to
appreciate and revere the biodiversity around them. Students
can also be encouraged to draw or sketch flora and fauna and
the scenery around them. Nature photography is another
activity which students can learn with expert mentors. Poetry
and music sessions can also be held in parks and gardens on nature themes.
16
By: Pralhad & Padma DHUMAL
This will help students connect with nature and develop a healthy aesthetic and spiritual reverence for
nature. William Wordsworth, Rabindranath Tagore and many other famous and brilliant poets, litterateurs as
well as artists were inspired by nature. In fact, there is a creative and spiritual spirit in all of us. By relaxing in
the midst of nature and revering nature, our creative and spiritual side can be expressed to the
fullest. Moreover, when students are encouraged to learn in the midst of nature, they will become more
relaxed and will be able to do well in other activities. With rapid industrialization and commoditization of the
earth and everything around us, human beings are becoming more and more disconnected with the natural
environment. Thus, it becomes even more important to encourage students to learn in the midst of nature and
revere the natural environment. By connecting with the earth, one will be aware of the healing and
rejuvenating aspects of our heavily exploited planet. Students will be much more inclined to move towards
sustainable development when they learn in the midst of nature and revere it. This will in turn help them
explore healthier and eco-friendlier lifestyles and ways of being. When educators help in nurturing an earth-
sensitive worldview, they can help bring about a revolution among students to move towards a more
sustainable future.
20. Importance of Social Science | Why
Study Social Science?
Social science was earlier pushed to the margins of all the
academic subjects that were studied. Moreover, it was
considered a boring subject with dry details to be remembered. It
still remains so for some students as educational reforms take
time to set in. With education reforms, social science textbooks
and the teaching and studying of social science reflect a sea
change with real-life examples, case studies and other thoughtful
inputs. With smart interactive boards, many historical events can
be studied in an engrossing manner through the effect of multimedia. Practical projects ensure that students
enhance their problem-solving skills when studying topics under social science. Under this changing scenario,
let us discuss the importance of social science.
Importance of Social Science | Why Study Social Science?
1. Deepens understanding of the world from social, historical, economic, civil, political and
geographic perspectives: When students study social science, students will be able to better understand
the world through multiple perspectives that have helped shape the world as it is today. Even though
students may not realize it, day to day life has been influenced by topics which are studied in social
science. For example, if students are studying about consumer rights in India, they can rest be assured
that they are protected against consumer-related crimes and negligence due to the Consumer Protection
Act of 1986 as they can seek redressal for any serious grievances and danger to life. Due to this,
instances like food poisoning, medical-related negligence or crime, faulty appliances, faulty engineering
and constructions have largely reduced.
2. Helps bring about positive reforms in society: The study of social science is important as it sensitizes
students to the numerous socioeconomic problems that society is facing. Instead of simply being
complacent, feeling helpless or becoming overwhelmed, studying social science helps students to bring
about positive reforms in society. Millions of people who struggled and fought so bravely to free India from
the clutches of British imperialism exemplify social science in action. Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru,
Dr. Ambedkar and other prominent figures of the Indian freedom struggle studied many social science
topics in depth and applied them in a practical manner. Many post-colonial social activists and thinkers
worldwide have also brought about positive reforms by deeply imbibing and reflecting on many topics
studied under social science

21. Why are School Uniforms Necessary?
School uniforms are a part and parcel of schooling in India. It
is very much necessary in a country like India where there are
gnawing socioeconomic disparities. Provisions are sometimes
made to provide free school uniforms to children from poor
backgrounds. With a uniform dress code in school, all students
from different socioeconomic backgrounds can concentrate on
the joy of learning without having to worry about their dress. It
helps to create a “level playing field” at least in school spaces
in a country where disparities can be more than
glaring. However, the sad reality is that quality schooling in
India is privatized and out of the reach of many poorer children.
In a global consumer culture with its overemphasis on
superficiality, school uniforms also ensure that childhood is not largely invaded by this culture. In many
developed countries, people in favor of school uniforms state that it helps lay emphasis on inner qualities and
thoughts, words, and action rather than mere outward appearance. This becomes more important in the
school-going days as children can be more vulnerable and impressionable.
With regards to the school uniform itself, there may be some objections to certain practices involving uniforms
like wearing ties and even shoes and socks on hot summer days when students are in class. There can be
modifications made to ensure that uniforms are comfortable, smart and sensible and take into consideration
environmental factors. School uniforms also add to the sense of safety and security within a school.
In certain schools, the practice of allotting one day for wearing “color dress” is in force. This can help to
ensure that students are not completely overwhelmed by having to wear a school uniform day in and day out in
school. A “color dress” day once in a week can also be more exciting rather than having no uniforms at all.
People who are in favor of abolishing uniforms state that it brings about conformity and fits children into a
particular mold. However, those who are in favor state that even without uniforms, there may be peer
pressure, especially among teenagers, to adhere to certain fashions or styles apart from other socioeconomic
pressures. Well, whatever be the debate about school uniforms, they will continue to form one of the indelible
memories of school life in India for years to come

22. What is Homeschooling? | Advantages and Disadvantages of
Homeschooling
What is homeschooling?
The term “homeschooling” is used when children are educated
by parents and tutors at home instead of being sent to a formal
school.
Homeschooling is an endeavor which parents may take up in
order to educate their children after careful thought, planning
and consideration. Children who are homeschooled may then
take up public school exams in class 10 and 12 as independent
candidates. It is a very rare practice with US figures for
homeschooling being around 3% in 2007. In some countries, it
is illegal.
The most famous person who was homeschooled was Thomas Alva Edison. In fact, young Thomas was
dubbed as being unintelligent by his teacher. This prompted Thomas to be pulled out of a formal school and to
be homeschooled by his mother. Thomas Alva Edison later ended up being one of the greatest inventors and
invented the electric light bulb. Thomas Alva Edison had this to say of his beloved mother who had a deep
faith and confidence in him, “My mother was the making of me. She was so true, so sure of me; and I felt I had
something to live for, someone I must not disappoint.” On this note, let us have a short discussion of
the advantages and disadvantages of homeschooling.
Advantages of Homeschooling
1. Provides one-on-one attention to learners in the comfort of home: Homeschooling enables parents
and tutors to provide one-on-one attention to learners in the comfort of home. Individual attention may help
children learn concepts in a better manner.
2. Creates deeper and stronger bonds between parents and children: Homeschooling may result in
fostering a stronger and more meaningful relationship between parents and children. The children may
look up to their parents as their friend, philosopher and guide.
3. Gives learners more freedom to explore and learn different concepts: With no undue pressure to
complete any prescribed curriculum, homeschooled children may be able to learn at their own pace and
also learn concepts at a deeper level. Field trips and projects done by homeschoolers may be after an
interesting discussion which can further create enthusiasm in children.
4. Helps students become independent learners: Students can become more self-driven and independent
learners as a result of homeschooling.
Disadvantages of Homeschooling
1. Miss interaction and socialization with a large group of students: Homeschoolers will miss interacting
and socializing with a large group of students. They may miss the special bonds that can be forged with a
diverse and larger group of peers. They may also miss the special insights and inputs that can be given
while interacting with peers.
2. Miss expert teachers and state-of-the-art facilities provided by schools: Expert teachers and
facilitators for a diverse range of subjects may expose children to a lot more learning and insights than what
a homeschooling setup can do. Parents who opt for homeschooling of their children have to go to great
lengths to provide adequate exposure in diverse fields from music to sciences.
3. Parents may find that they have little time for themselves: Homeschooling can be daunting, even
though it can be rewarding as well. Parents may find that almost all their time is spent in ensuring that the
learning inputs provided at home is of above average standards. This can sometimes drain the energy of
parents. Sometimes, parents may also have to singlehandedly deal with pangs of teenagers and also a
few instances of fussing, aggression or tantrums.

23. Is Homework Necessary for Students? | The Pros and Cons of
Homework
Homework and the necessity of homework has been a
subject of debate in many countries. In India, homework has
always been an integral part of school life. Earlier, the nature
of homework leaned towards rote learning and memorization of
questions and answers. With a slew of educational reforms
that have been introduced in India, teachers are slowly being
encouraged to provide homework that encourages critical
thinking and innovative skills among students. However, the
debate still carries on regarding homework.
The following is a short discussion regarding homework.
Is Homework Necessary?
The Pros of Homework
1. Provides sufficient practice and reinforcement of concepts: The adage “Practice makes perfect” is
very much true for any learning activity. When students learn about a concept, only if they have
opportunities for sufficient practice will they be able to learn the concept well. In mathematics, sufficient
practice will ensure that students do not do “careless” mistakes and also complete a theory question paper
on time. The same can be translated to other subjects. With the vast syllabus that needs to be covered,
homework allows students to reinforce what is studied in class.
2. Helps students develop study skills and time management: Homework invariably helps students
develop study skills. It also helps them to practice time management. When homework is given, students
already have carefully planned and researched study resources that can guide them in their journey of
learning. Moreover, quality time may be spent in learning that might be diverted towards passively
absorbing the superficial and degrading stuff shown on some TV and entertainment programs. Also,
homework helps students develop time management skills as they learn how to use trackers and
timetables. Study skills and good time management skills prepare students well for future endeavors.
3. Encourages self-study and also helps involve family members in the learning process:Homework
encourages students to become good independent learners. At the same time, it also encourages family
members to take an interest in a child’s or student’s learning process. Parents may be able to provide
valuable inputs and suggestions.
The Cons of Homework
1. Increases stress levels in students: If schools overwhelm students with homework and assignments,
stress levels among students can increase. They may feel pressurized, and the joie de vivre that learning
needs to provide becomes diluted.
2. Time for play and simple relaxation gets reduced: Children earlier used to spend a lot of time playing
outdoors. Nowadays, with growing amounts of homework even in the primary level along with tuition
classes, children hardly find time to play outdoors. Spending quality time with family members is also
reduced if a child is given too much homework.
3. Quality of learning may get diminished: If parents “spoon-feed” children while doing homework, the
quality of learning may get diminished. Also, if students do not properly research, think and present an
assignment in their own words but instead resort to copying or cheating, then the quality of learning by the
student and learning outcome gets diminished.

24. Importance of Art for Enhancing Academic Learning
Using art in a variety of subjects can enhance the academic
learning process. From making tiny workable models to using
art for reinforcing a concept, art can be a great way to make
learning interesting and exciting. The following are a few
pointers on the importance of art in enhancing academic
learning.
Importance of Art for Enhancing Academic Learning
1. Enhances and gives a vivid understanding of concepts:
Simple art forms like origami and the South Indian floor design Kolam can be used to learn various
concepts in geometry and mathematics. Every art form incorporates concepts in mathematics and
science. In all subjects, simple models made from eco-friendly or recyclable materials help students
understand concepts better. For example, if students are learning about volcanoes, they can make tiny
models with the help of the teacher. By making such 3D models, students will be able to understand the
concept in a vivid manner.
2. Helps students remember concepts better:
When art is used to learn a concept, students will remember the concept better and for a longer period as
the learning then becomes linked to art. For example, if students are learning about the water cycle,
making drawings and diagrams of the water cycle will ensure that they remember the concept better than
mere reading. This may not seem like art, but any drawing, however, simple incorporates art.
3. Makes learning more fun and improves fine motor skills and concentration:
Learning a concept becomes more fun if students can make tiny art pieces while learning a concept. They
will also be able to concentrate better and fine motor skills also improve as a result of doing art. Even for
teaching simple concepts in grammar, a simple origami item or ribbon art can be made while using the
parts of speech that needs to be practiced. This will make learning all the more fun and also improves
concentration and fine motor skills. Similarly, art can be used in any subject to make learning more fun and
interesting and enhance energy and concentration levels.

25. Importance of Drama for Enhancing Education/the Learning
Process
Drama, acting and role-playing different scenes and
situations is a wonderful way of enhancing education and
the learning process. Encouraging students to enact a
scene or situation will ensure that the student understands
and remembers certain topics in a better manner. The
following is a short discussion on the importance of drama in
education.
Importance of Drama for Enhancing Education/the Learning Process
1. Creates further interest in the topic of study: Historical topics and some literature topics can be further
studied and discussed with the help of drama. Students will become more interested in a historical or
literature topic if they are able to enact certain scenes. Even subjects like mathematics and science
become more interesting with enactments and some drama added to the learning. For example, in
science, if students are learning about electricity, a small enactment on Thomas Alva Edison’s life and how
he invented the light bulb will be inspiring and motivating.
2. Helps students remember and understand topics better: If scenes from the freedom movement are
enacted or any other historical topic, students will be better able to remember details. In a large classroom,
students can be divided into groups, and each student will be able to enact a small component of a large
play. This will help them to get into the skin of different characters and help them understand the different
scenes and situations the characters face. Students will be better able to empathize with different
characters as a result of dramatization. They may also be better able to understand concepts if they are
studied with the help of drama.
3. Helps students become more sensitive and empathetic: Social studies, history and literature if taught
with the help of drama will help students develop greater sensitivity and empathy towards
characters. Instead of just reading about the characters, when students do an enactment, they are better
able to understand the thoughts, feelings and emotions of characters as they face different situations.
4. Helps enhance creative thinking: Dramatization helps students enhance creative thinking
skills. Students will be encouraged to think a little more about the character and the situation. They may
also come up with interesting discussions and reflections after the dramatization. They may be inspired to
come up with innovative ideas as a result of dramatization or enactment while studying a topic.

26. Parenting different personality types
Every child is unique in his/her own way and has a unique personality. Parenting styles must depend on the
child’s personality and not on the parent’s thinking. There were days when the child used to sit when asked to
and stand when asked to. These days’ it is not possible as the children ask a lot of questions, some of which
cannot be explained to them easily. It is therefore important for a parent to identify the child’s personality and
work towards disciplining them in the right manner.
Kiersey Bates system is one of the oldest, popular and useful systems which helps identify the child’s
personality type and base the parents’ parenting style on it. Based on the Kiersey Bates system, there are 16
personality types which can be broadly divided into 4 groups that are easy to remember. They are:
1. Guardians – the personality group of guardians amount to 40-45% of the population. A guardian child
wants security, rules and regulations, dependability and financial soundness. A child of this personality type
cares a lot if parents keep up their promises and value the same to help the child in understanding the rules
and regulations. He/she also likes to be nurtured with values and traditions which are meaningful to them.
2. Artisans – a child who is expressive, imaginative, creative and spontaneous and is willing to continue with
any skill/talent/sport is known as an ‘artisan child’. Such children excel in athletics and good in
performance. Children in this personality type are less attentive towards activities which involve rules and
regulations and scheduling, such as finance, homework etc.
Artisan children like to enjoy their life, without worrying much about anything else and appreciate when their
parents go along with them in this thought.
1. Idealist – children in this personality type are very sensitive. They are hurt when there is a conflict in the
family or criticized by others for their behavior etc. Such children like to impress others, enjoy in a positive
environment at home and are helpful most of the time. Idealist children like to be listened to, given
importance, appreciate their work etc. These children must be parented with care and any harsh treatment
meted out to them can result in them becoming depressed.
2. Rational – a rational child values logic and fairness. Children in this group like to constantly improve
themselves, look for better ways to work, is self-determined, independent at a very early age and prefers to
choose their own style of dressing, reading and learning. Injustice and unfair behavior meted out is never
forgiven.
Every parent must first identify their child’s personality type and then work towards parenting the child.
27. Parenting tips for healthy habits in kids
Health is without a doubt one of the most important aspects of any student’s life. Not being in good health
tends to affect a number of areas of a child’s life, including their learning, memory and performance. The
important thing to do in a classroom is to be able to provide the correct tools and learning to the students to
enable them to lead a well-balanced life.
The healthy habits in children will have to be begun at an early age so as to enable them to have a complete
learning experience. In addition, the process of incorporating learning and experience together can help in
making the habits lifelong. Beginning them at school gives them the opportunity to practice clean living in a
better way.
Washing hands, face and also bathroom etiquette are all things that have to be inculcated from an early age
on. Beginning these at kindergarten level will enable the students to have healthy and clean habits as they
grow.

Proper sleep is another important habit that has to be acquired by students. Many kids seemingly have no
timetables about sleep work or anything else. Odd hours of work and rest tend to wear them out and proper
habits of sleep must also be taught to them.
Another important factor is nutrition. Most kids do not keep track of what they eat and naturally during growing
years they like sugary and fattening food stuff irrespective of the health quotient involved. It is important to be
able to eat the right food and the best learning occurs from parents- imitatively.
Positive attitude, a healthy mind and an encouraging atmosphere is essential for the child’s well-being and
development. Good health and mental well-being is essential to a child’s well-being. Encouragement, praise
and timely inputs help the child perform to the best of their abilities.
28. Healthy habits for academic success
Health is without a doubt one of the most important aspects of any student’s life. Not being in good health tends
to affect a number of areas of a child’s life, including their learning, memory and performance. The important
thing to do in a classroom is to be able to provide the correct tools and learning to the students to enable them
to lead a well balanced life.
The healthy habits in children will have to be begun at an early age so as to enable them to have a complete
learning experience. In addition, the process of incorporating learning and experience together can help in
making the habits lifelong. Beginning them at school gives them the opportunity to practice clean living in a better
way.
Washing hands, face and also bathroom etiquette are all things that have to be inculcated from an early age on.
Beginning these at kindergarten level will enable the students to have healthy and clean habits as they grow.

29. Parenting tips for those with special needs kids
Special needs children are no less capable or different from any others. They have simply been born different
and require some additional assistance to be able to achieve results like their other counterparts. Children
recognize differences and learn to fear or isolate them from an early age. This tends to make things quite difficult
to deal with for a teacher or parent.
Having a child who is differently abled or with special needs can be quite challenging. There will be many
questions, sudden unscheduled meetings, difficulties in evaluation and much more can make the equation even
more difficult. The important thing to do is to find suitable assistance and also get proper evaluation and testing
done so as to ascertain what can be done for your child.
You might be feeling particularly alone in the classroom as being the only child with a physical disability. It is not
possible to overcome your difficulty instantly and you may be facing challenges with using your computer,
performing in class or more. It is important to bring to the notice of your teacher or a parent what is troubling you.
There are a number of special aids technologies and tools which can be used to help students with difficulties
overcome their problems and also tackle them effectively. Special keyboards with larger and wider spaced letters,
cognitive tools, movement based tools and more can be used to make learning more comfortable and easier for
kids with special needs.
As a parent of a child with disability of some kind, you will have to face many challenges and also need to tackle
situations every now and then which are new and also unknown to you previously. It is important to stay calm
and patient when dealing with situations and people. Concern for your child’s well-being along with a positive
attitude will go a long way in seeing things through.
30. Social strategies to help ADHD kids
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity disorder or Attention Deficit Disorder is a condition that affects a large number of
kids. It is important to understand that these kids need special attention and assistance to help them cope and
overcome the difficulties faced.
Here are some strategies to work on the situation:
The inclusion of the student with the ADD is important to give them a feeling of being with their peers and not
being targeted. These kids often face rejection and isolation and the class as a whole should be made sensitive
to accepting and not smothering the student.
Discuss or present a social situation to make the class and the students understand. Another activity to have is
to have the kids complete the situation by suggesting possible resolutions to the social judgment. Also discuss
consequences and actions.
Encourage social interactions between students but do not push too much against individual boundaries.
Repeated exposure and experience will lead to the student eventually being able to generalize the skills
acquired.
Monitor the social interactions and reactions of the kids. It is very easy for kids to flare up or make decisions to
treat someone differently. If it happens in your notice, as a teacher or parent try to involve the students with
differences together to arrive at the root of the matter.

Give positive strokes to the whole class and make each student do it and receive it. This is appropriate for all
ages, have each student come up to the front and then every other member say two positives about that
student. It’s a feel good task and also definitely boosts the child’s self-esteem.
Set up behavioral goals with the students. Not every child would be able to understand and pick up easily when
they have ADD or ADHD. It is important to break down larger tasks into smaller goals and achievements before
finalizing on targets to be achieved
31. Tackle your subjects and improve grades
Grades are without a doubt one of the most important aspects of a student’s life. As a student I would always
feel like I could do exceptionally well on subjects I like and those I did not like would invariably be ones with poor
scores and eventually my entire performance would get affected. That is when I realized that I need to buck up
and improve my grades or face being at the bottom of class.
To begin the path to academic success and better grades at subjects I did not like, I had to overcome my dislike
for the subject. It was more to do with the teacher than the subject was a fact I arrived at when I did some thinking.
The challenge lay in proving that teacher wrong about her evaluation of me and approaching things this way
changed my perspective. This was how I began to do well in Math, a subject that until then I had dreaded working
on.
Another problem I frequently faced was trying to cram too many difficult ideas at once in the end. I realized I had
been pushing the more difficult sections of my portions to later until at last it would turn a mountain out of a
molehill! I resolved to tackle the complex and difficult issues and topics at the beginning and work my way out of
things. This made my subjects get easier!
My next nemesis was remembering the many terms and elements in biology and chemistry. The best answer I
found to both these problems was to use memory tricks and techniques. Improving memory I learnt is a lifelong
process. It’s about focus, attention, preparation and application of the mind. I began to make up rhymes,
acronyms and also visualizing as I was learning. Soon I could recall much better and I continued to improve in
performing on my tests.
Learning can be fun, if you want it to be. It gets dreary to read text after text sometimes, so switch to images and
animated videos online to make learning an interesting process!
32. Technology for special needs
Although kids with special needs form a minor part of the population, having adequate facilities for this category
of individuals is also important. Students with disabilities have to encounter many difficulties in learning and
reaching their goals. However technology has been bridging the gaps considerably.
Still people who are physically disadvantaged face a variety of troubles and barriers that need to overcome. A
number of tools are available in the market which helps people tackle the troubles presented by standard
operation. Assistive or adaptive technologies have gone quite a long way in making things far easier.
A seemingly simple obstacle many students face is with regard to the height to the computer monitor or inability
to use hands properly to use the keyboard or the mouse. It is important to find equipment that has ample flexibility
and will allow the students maximum mobility.
There are also equipments available to accommodate and help with the disabilities people have to tackle.
Individuals who have access to a single head stick or pointing device will be able to use the pressing keys with
26
By: Pralhad & Padma DHUMAL
the pointing device. Sticky keys options allow people to use options where otherwise multiple keys have to be
pressed at once.
Having disk guides or appropriate positioning of the keyboards, monitors and so on can help to make it easier
for people to perform various tasks and activities.
Expanded keyboards with wider space between the keys, replacement of mouse and keyboards, left handed or
right handed keyboards are all available to assist people with disabilities. There are unique keyboards in place
which have been designed for kids without enough fingers, those who have learning disability or are visually
impaired.
There is a cognitive enhancement system available for gifted children, those with developmental disability or
attention and processing issues.
33. Tips for learning a foreign language
Learning a foreign language is a part of nearly every school’s curriculum these days. Students are often given a
choice regarding what they want to pick and most schools offer French or Hindi as an optional language. When
learning a foreign language, the first step is to have a good teacher. That is when you can get the basics right.
Make sure you practice enough or you will tend to forget the rules.
Spend time listening to music, watching movies and flipping through magazines of the new language. That way
you can slowly pick up on new words, the right intonation and also the right kind of sentence phrasing. Keep
asking a native speaker if you know one or your teacher to clarify doubts and work on learning newer words and
sentences.
Understand the cultural connotations and rules of the new country and the language. For this you will need to
learn about customs and traditions and also read as much as you can through books and e-learning materials.
As you acquire information you can research better and find out exactly the right kind of information for picking
up and speaking the language fluently almost like you have known it all your life.
Learn grammar, accents, order of letters, changes in gender, practice verb conjugations and more to acquire
expertise in the foreign language. Practice your learning and join a language club where you get to keep
improving and trying out your conversational skills as you learn. Practice with others, with batch-mates and also
do e-learning audio exercises to master the language and become more proficient at it. Work on flash cards,
attend the language lab sessions and make sure you get ample time trying out various words and phrases to
gain expertise in the language.
34. Chemistry help for students
Learning is a process that is different from individual to individual based on a number of different factors. People
perform differently and also learn differently. Good chemistry grades are dependent on a number of different
factors. If I had known these tips I bet I could have done much better back then. Here are some secrets that will
help you unlock the mysteries of chemistry far more easily.
Write it out, you cannot just learn it by heart. Chemistry has its own set of rules, regulations, terms and more.
Understanding the basics is important so is learning some things by rote. Practice working on various important
problems that elucidate the concepts by writing it out.
Spend quality time learning. You can spend time looking at concepts in chemistry running into hours, days and
months. It will not really yield results until you have been spending quality time on the subject. You have to pay
27
By: Pralhad & Padma DHUMAL
attention and concentrate for an hour and you can achieve results that would otherwise take you hours of
repetitive learning.
Another important resource to use is chemistry tutorial services or CD’s. There are excellent animated, image
rich audio and video content available from top companies like Tutor Vista, Edurite and more which will make
you more competent to handle the subject. An online chemistry course is also beneficial if you want greater clarity
or a different perspective from a tutor online.
Chemistry homework help is also another great online resource to use. Websites like Tutor Next allow people to
submit their homework assignments, get detailed step by step solutions and even consult with a tutor should
they have any additional doubts regarding the completed work.
When learning any subject, no matter how difficult it is, begin with it and get it out of the way. You will feel more
confident about tackling your work and also more competent to achieve the results you want to.
35. Helping students live an above average life
Ask yourself a simple question- do you think you are an average performer or an above average one? If you are
reading on, you probably want to change your life. The key to a better life is at hand, answer some simple
questions first. Take a paper and jot down why you are not able to be better, bigger and smarter.
This exercise is simple enough, but don’t discard it, let me take you through an example. 2 Individuals, Steve
and Bob were asked to list why they think they cannot achieve what they want to.
Steve listed:
I would want to work on my own than under someone else to achieve my goals
I have to find ample resources
Attachments to certain events, people, which does not let me leave to achieve
Since the reasons listed by Steve, are internal it is possible to change the situation and achieve his full
potential. It is always better to have internal factors rather than external ones which are more easily
changeable and can be controlled.
Bob listed:
The facilities in school are inadequate
The environment to learn is noisy, has too many people
It is difficult to deal with the new subjects in the syllabus
Since Bob listed reasons which are external, coping with them and tackling the situation is a difficult process.
Having an internal locus of control means knowing the factors affecting your performance are within your
control while in case of an external locus of control they are not.
When you wish to achieve better grades, better performance and better output you have to be able to change
your locus of control to internal and discard the less important external factors that are not within your means to
change or alter. So go ahead, change your life today!
36. Teaching concentration to children
Teaching children the art of concentration can be difficult since they will not be able to understand the meaning
and the importance of it. Some children are seen to have a short attention span and can result in problems
while learning and doing homework. This gives rise to the need to help the child understand and focus.
Here are some ways by which a parent/teacher can help the child concentrate in the classroom/home.
1. Daily routine – establish a daily routine to study and make learning a part of the daily activity. Allocating a
specific time to study will help the child understand the importance of working during that time. This will let
28
By: Pralhad & Padma DHUMAL
the child know what to expect at that particular time of the day. This will only help in separating the child’s
play time with studies.
2. Suitable place to study – a child must be given a proper place and environment to study. Creating a study
section at home and encouraging the child to complete his/her studies will help the child realize its
importance.
3. Encourage physical activity – children are confined to a room in school and would feel restless when
asked to do their home-work soon after returning. Encouraging physical activities can help them release
their energy in a positive manner. Since the mind is relaxed after play, children will be able to concentrate
better.
4. Self-control – teach the child self-control by asking him/her to sit in a place without fiddling around. This
will help you know how long the child is able to stay focused. Based on this, homework time can be
adjusted with breaks.
5. Games – every child loves to play and mental games are helpful in improving one’s memory and
concentration. Scrabble, puzzles, etc can help in improving the child’s memory. One can find that there are
many memory improving games available for children.
6. Time frame for homework/class work – Set a time frame for the child to complete his/her work. This will
give a sense of seriousness to the work done by the child. Supervise and occasionally ask the child for the
progress about the work. This will keep the child focused and on track.
It will take time for the child to show his/her seriousness towards the studies and therefore a parent needs to be
patient. Give the child some time to get used to the new routine established by you
37. Martial arts for better performance in the classroom
The greatest wealth is health – Virgil.
Health is considered as a priceless gift which we all have. A healthy body, combined with a healthy mind is
required for all of us to achieve our goals and success in life. With the emphasis being laid on providing good
education to children, most of the parents neglect the need for providing an opportunity for building a healthy
body too. Enrolling the child to a martial arts program would have double benefits, by building a healthy body
and a healthy mind too.
Learning martial arts will not only help the child know the self-defense techniques, but will also help shaping the
child’s mind. Here are a few benefits to the child in learning martial arts:
1. Co-ordination: Learning any kind of martial arts will help improve the child’s co-ordination. It will make the
child physically stronger and also flexible.
2. Self- discipline: Martial arts learning involves discipline. It is also the most important behavioral
characteristic, which any parent would like to imbibe in their child. Every martial arts base their teaching on
discipline and as such this will imbibe this trait in children.
3. Self-confident: A child who learns martial arts will be self-confident. The various levels of ranking system,
will help the child achieve measurable goals which is realistic to attain. The sense of achievement which a
child gets by graduating to another level, will boost his/her confidence and will be permanently imprinted in
him/her.
4. Respect: Just as self-discipline is an important part of martial arts, so is respect. Emphasis is laid on
respecting one and all in martial arts, which helps the child imbibe this quality.
5. Time management: Martial arts teaches children the importance and value of time. Procrastination is a
habit, which many children have. This can be overcome by learning martial arts.
6. Reduces stress and anxiety: Martial arts help not only in maintaining a healthy body, but also a healthy
mind, by reducing the stress faced by children. One of the techniques which is taught in martial arts is the
breathing. Slow breathing exercises are followed which helps reduce the stress level, thereby helping in
relaxing the mind.
29
By: Pralhad & Padma DHUMAL
7. Concentration: Being able to concentrate is an art and a gift, which is taught in a martial arts class. Every
class begins with relaxation and concentration exercises, which is very helpful for children to develop their
skills.
8. Leadership qualities: Martial arts imbibe qualities of respect, confidence and discipline, which are some of
the best leadership qualities, one can expect to find in a person.
Learning martial arts will help the children be able to evolve in a much better way and be successful in life.
38. Study breaks for effective studying
Studying and study skills are something you may have heard enough and more about. What about study
breaks? I’m sure you know that it is always essential to be taking breaks between your classes if you want to
be doing well and learning the new content. It is important to take at least one ten minute break for every 50
minutes of time that you spend in studying.
Staring at textbook content and presentations for hours together would tire your body and mind as it certainly
involves a lot of concentration and effort on the student’s part. Sleeping is an equally important part of study
breaks as demonstrated by the ever popular notion of power naps. People will certainly remember more of the
content they have learnt when they take a nap post a study session than if they keep cramming all night
without any rest.
When trying to memorize a certain kind of information make sure that you do it subject wise rather than trying
to learn a little of everything. The brain has huge capacity and reserves of memory but when you learn multiple
topics at once by fitting them in between ‘breaks’, you are overloading your senses with information.
One important thing to do between your studies is to distress yourself. Drink plenty of green tea rather than
coffee. It will soothe your system and cleanse your body far better. You can relax in your study location by
doing simple breathing exercises or take a short walk in a quiet area to become calmer.
The more rest you give your system, the better you will feel to learn. Make sure you do not stay too hungry as
well so as to be energetic enough to learn properly. Studying when done in the right manner can be almost fun
for the student.
39. Tips to improve concentration
There are days when you may be able to solve 20 sums in math in an hour and other days when doing 10
sums itself becomes a chore and a difficult task. No matter which subject it is, results do tend to vary now and
then. The key difference between the day you performed exceptionally well and the day you did not is simple,
concentration.
Concentration is about focusing on one single thing. Often the trouble is that our thoughts tend to travel
exceptionally fast and hence focusing on one single thought while your mind is racing with a million thoughts
becomes a difficult task.
In order to concentrate, observe events and people as they are in a high level of concentration. A classic
example would be to observe your friends or just people around you when you are watching a highly popular
flick for the first time. Everyone’s eyes would be glued to the screen, their breathing would be lower and for
them to notice something else a big distraction would be required. This should tell you what the state of
concentration should be like when you sit down with your books next time!

  • 5. 4 By: Pralhad & Padma DHUMAL 1. Identify your child’s strengths It is important to take cognizance of the strengths of your child. While some children may do well in all the academic subjects, other children may be inclined towards a select few. Each child is unique in that aspect. It is important to identify what your child’s strengths are. Be appreciative of his/her strengths. This does not mean that one does not pay attention to the weaknesses. However, highlighting the strengths will give your child the energy and impetus to also work in overcoming weaknesses to the best of their ability. Identifying strengths should also include character traits and extra-curricular activities that the child exemplifies and is passionate about. This ensures that equal importance is also given to values and extra-curricular activities in addition to academics. 2. Avoid comparisons and give priority to building up strengths It is important to avoid making comparisons with other children and pressurizing children when they are not performing in certain subjects to the expected level. Instead, accept the child for who she/he is. If your child is good in art but is uncomfortable with mathematics, make sure that you take her/him to art shows, etc., and even arrange special art classes for her/him. When you do this, your child will feel more comfortable about attending a math tuition too and will feel more confident about improving in other areas. It is important not to push them towards popular or conventional courses if their interests and strengths lie elsewhere. By recognizing their strengths and encouraging them to further strengthen their skill sets, you will help them to prepare themselves for a fulfilling future. 3. Study Tips for Academic Success Studies become enjoyable if students are able to learn in a joyful manner. Studies are not meant to be something to be dreaded or to be fearful of. The joy of learning can be enhanced only if students follow good study habits. This will help them achieve academic success. Encouragement and a safe, nurturing and secure learning environment are important for children. Self-confidence that one can overcome any challenge while learning is an important aspect of the learning process. When a child first learns to walk, a child usually stumbles and falls and then tries to take the first few steps again. In the same way, any learning process may have a learning curve depending on the child’s uniqueness and prior experiences. The following are a few study tips for academic success: 1. Fill all gaps while learning a concept: A child may not fully understand a certain concept due to certain gaps in learning. If the teacher or parent helps the child by identifying the gaps, the child will be better equipped to proceed further. Study modules including multimedia study modules will help the child understand the concept better, fill gaps and review the concept. The child will then be ready to take on more advanced concepts. 2. Study at a steady pace: Instead of rushing through loads of information, it is better for students to review and revise topics at a steady pace. If they carefully study a topic and revise a topic the very first time it is taught, they will be able to understand it better and will have better retention. Clarifying doubts will further enhance their understanding of the topic. When they have to again review loads of information, they can go at a slightly faster pace as they have taken the time to thoroughly study the topic during the initial stages. 3. Importance of motivation and encouragement: Children may not have built up the required self-esteem to be self-motivated. They may need the extra motivation and encouragement until they start believing in themselves. It is important for parents and teachers to encourage students when they show progress and improvement in learning. We all know of stories of people who overcame great odds due to their parents or
  • 6. 5 By: Pralhad & Padma DHUMAL teachers undying belief in them. In fact, the great inventor Thomas Alva Edison was considered unintelligent by his teacher. He was immediately pulled out of school by his mother and taught at home. He began to blossom because of this. Thomas Alva Edison even said the following, “My mother was the making of me. She was so true, so sure of me, and I felt I had something to live for, someone I must not disappoint.” Helen Keller was lovingly guided by the empathetic mentor Anne Sullivan and is now a source of inspiration to students the world over. 4. Make use of study techniques during study sessions: KWL, SQ3R and PQRST are three study techniques that can be used to enhance study sessions. K stands for what I Know, W stands for what I am Wondering about this and L stands for what I Learnt. SQ3R stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recite and Review. PQRST stands for Preview, Question, Read, Summarize and Test. Check our earlier blog entries for more details on these study techniques. 5. Review with the help of sample question papers and exercises: Sample question papers and exercises give students sufficient practice to tackle any kind of question within the stipulated time. 6. Apply learning through practical and project-based learning: Certain theoretical aspects of learning can be practically applied in real life. This will make learning more meaningful and enjoyable. For example, student can write their own poems after learning about literary devices, design solar appliances like a toy solar car, etc. 7. Do not stick to textbook learning alone: Go beyond the textbook and study the topic in depth. Learn more about the topic through books in libraries, internet and also through practical and field experiences and by meeting a variety of different people. Also, maintain your own study journal and work on your own little practical projects. 4. Ways to get the formulae into your mind Children always find it hard to get formulae right in their mind. When it comes to understanding formulae and recalling them, there is a kind of hesitance which comes up. For some memorizing the formulae is easy, while for others it can be a challenge. Challenge – yes, but nothing that it cannot be achieved. To help succeed in this challenge, we have some tips that can help you get every formulae correct. 1. Pay attention to what is being taught in the classroom. This is the first time you are introduced to the formulae and as such your brain is going to be eager to know more about it. 2. Read over and over again – go through the formula over and over again and it will retain in your memory. This can be done by rote learning method, wherein irrespective of whether you understand the formula or not, you will remember it. 3. Divide the formula into bits – if the formula is lengthy, divide the formula into pieces. Proceed by taking one step at a time and you will find that the formula solves itself in your mind. 4. Associate – this is an easy trick which many of us use unconsciously. Break and associate the formula to something which you are familiar with. 5. Relax before starting to understand the formulae – a calm and relaxed body will be able to grasp the content in a much better way than a stressed and tired mind. 6. Put up notes in all the places where you can see – this is one well known method to get any information imprinted in your memory. The more often you see them the better will be the impression of that particular information. Apart from all these tips, it is also required that you eat and sleep well and keep your body hydrated at all times. As the old saying goes ‘a healthy mind in a healthy body’, one must be physically fit and strong enough to be mentally strong.
  • 7. 6 By: Pralhad & Padma DHUMAL 5. Rote Learning Versus Meaningful Learning Rote learning was one of the most prevalent methods of student learning in India until recent education reforms. It still continues to be a practice in some schools. Right from the primary level, teachers merely dictated out pre-prepared questions and answers which children wrote down in their note-books. Many students blindly “mugged up” the questions and answers without properly understanding the topics of study. The annual examination evaluated students on how well they “mugged up” the questions and answers. Will the critical thinking and innovative skills of students improve in a rote learning environment? Meaningful learning on the other hand involves thoroughly understanding what is being studied. Meaningful learning also involves making associations and relating new knowledge to prior knowledge. It also involves analyzing, researching, reflecting, discussing and then articulating learning in one’s own words. Meaningful learning ensures that students are active participants in the learning process rather than mere passive recipients. Meaningful learning also incorporates practical learning and “learning by doing” in the form of projects and assignments. In addition to this, students are also involved in critical thinking and analysis of what is being studied. This can involve processes like comparative analysis of pieces of literature, etc. Moreover, meaningful learning encourages creativity and innovation. Students are inspired to do practical projects based on what they have learnt through meaningful learning inputs. Rote learning on the other hand usually dulls the minds of students, makes them passive and never helps them think beyond the status quo. The 21st century skills required in the postmodern information era includes critical thinking and creativity. Meaningful learning helps learners think in a critical as well as creative manner. Rote learning was prevalent earlier because it was an offshoot of Macaulay system of schooling during the British imperial era. The imperialists merely wanted Indians and other world citizens to be cogs for their own vested interests and fit narrow clerical roles. Even though after independence, the job scenario has expanded, educational reforms did not keep pace with the changes. Recent changes in educational curricula and textbooks of various boards across India reflect the march towards meaningful learning. This will ensure that students not only learn in a meaningful manner but also attempt to live a more meaningful life.
  • 8. 7 By: Pralhad & Padma DHUMAL 6. Importance of Reading Biographies and Autobiographies Reading biographies and autobiographies can be a great source of inspiration to both young students and grown-ups alike. They are testimonies to the resilience of the human spirit. Many biographies and autobiographies of famous personalities reveal that they achieved extraordinary heights through perseverance. Just like each one of us, they had their shares of ups and downs and also an underlying vision to make this world a better place for all. Thomas Alva Edison, the great scientist who invented the light bulb was considered “dumb” by his teacher. He was pulled out of school and was home-schooled by his mother who believed in him and encouraged him. Thomas Alva Edison said the following of his mother, ““My mother was the making of me. She was so true, so sure of me, and I felt I had something to live for, someone I must not disappoint.” This shows what a difference an encouraging mentor can make in a student’s or anyone’s life. His spirit of perseverance is best articulated in the following inspiring quote of his, “I have not failed. I have just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” He was not bogged down by failure and was not even sure about the outcome of his experiments. His passion, focus and determination were what made him carry on. Another inspiring famous personality is Helen Keller. Her autobiography “The Story of My Life” is very heartfelt with exquisite observations. Helen Keller also describes how Anne Sullivan, her loving and kind mentor and teacher, helped her during her childhood and early days of youth in her journey of learning and discovery as a visually and hearing challenged person. Helen Keller was able to courageously strive on and became an inspiring lecturer and social activist and an icon not only for the visually and hearing challenged but all human beings to persevere under any circumstance. Helen Keller’s inspiring quote, “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched-they must be felt with the heart,” reveal the importance of enduring human values like love, kindness and empathy which can only be felt deep within a person and can never be experienced in a hollow or superficial manner. Nelson Mandela’s “Long Walk to Freedom” is another extraordinary testament of someone who was imprisoned for 27 long years, but did not let that shackle his inner spirit. Nelson Mandela walked out of prison after an unbelievable 27 years at the age of 77 and later became the president of apartheid-free South Africa. He was able to forgive with an extraordinary generosity of spirit and stand up for the ideals of liberty and democracy for which he and like- minded people had to go through all sorts of ordeals against an oppressive apartheid regime. The spirit of perseverance is beautifully summed up in the following inspiring quote by Nelson Mandela, “The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.”
  • 9. 8 By: Pralhad & Padma DHUMAL 7. Time Management. Time management is the key to doing well in academics. Good time management ensures that you will not feel stressed during the CCE assessments. You will be able to enjoy your studies, and you can take it quite easy during the assessments! The following are a few time management tips: 1. Prepare a study time-table/planner: Prepare a study time-table/planner stating when you will revise each concept taught for each subject. You can prepare a study planner for each month. When you finish revising a concept, you can tick it and also add a little star or anything else that keeps you going and even add some running commentary. Sometimes, you may finish the revision earlier than planned, and sometimes, you may take some more time. That’s alright. Just add tentative dates and times and make the time-table flexible. 2. Weekly review the study plan: It is good to do a weekly check of the study plan to make sure that you are studying at a comfortable pace and covering the portions at a steady rate. If you are able to manage your study time reasonably well in a week, you can do wonders in a month. Also, make sure that you balance your study time with a good dose of extra- curricular activities, rest and relaxation. 3. Prioritize, reinforce understanding and identify gaps: Prioritize which concepts need to be studied first and for which subject. For most concepts, a second or even third quick revision will be necessary for long-term retention. For math topics, you may need to practice and keep at some type of problems until you are able to solve them with ease. If you are stuck, note down which topics you do not understand clearly, note down questions and doubts. You can ask your teacher, parent or seek the help of an expert tutor. You can also read further on the topic on the internet or refer to books in the library. In this way, you will have a thorough understanding of the topic. As far as possible, also try to learn a little more about the topic and look at applying it in practical situations. Going beyond the textbook will ensure that you have a comprehensive understanding of many topics. Importance of Images and Multimedia in Improving Memory while Studying Memory is greatly enhanced with the help of images and multimedia content. Imagine that a student is learning about a topic like the “water cycle.” If the student read about the topic, without any images, it would take longer for her/him to remember the key points and processes involved in the water cycle. With an image, memory is retained for a longer time, and with multimedia content containing animations and voice- overs, the student will be able to recall the processes involved even months after they have studied the topic. The processes involved in the water cycle like evaporation, condensation and precipitation will play in the mind’s eye of the student. They will be able to visualize the entire process and also understand and explain it better during assessments. As they have already watched an audiovisual regarding the topic several times including while revising, remembering details and articulating their understanding will become easier. Images and multimedia
  • 10. 9 By: Pralhad & Padma DHUMAL content help greater and faster retention and understanding of concepts when one has to consider the vast syllabus and curricula that students have to cover for multiple subjects. They will also feel that studying is not as monotonous a task as they are involved in watching animations and voice-overs which have been meticulously prepared by academic experts. Children who use multimedia and audiovisual content while studying have a greater and surer advantage of understanding concepts better and thus achieving top grades in their academics. Parents, on watching their children learn in a more enjoyable and effective manner with the help of multimedia content, have often expressed the view that they wished they had such tools while they were learning. The multimedia content is designed in such a way that it is as interactive as possible. Thus, this further ensures that memory retention of what is studied is higher. The multimedia content may also include educational games that are not only fun but also ensure that students remember what is learnt for a longer time in a fun and engaging manner. The adage “A picture is worth a 1000 words” can be multiplied a thousand more times when one uses multimedia content for learning. 9. How to Increase Memory Power | Tips to Improve Memory Memory is crucial to do well in academics and all aspects of life. With a vast syllabus and curriculum, students have to sift through a lot of information and articulate their understanding on varied topics. Good memory skills and an enhanced memory power are important for ensuring that students stay on top of the syllabus and achieve good grades. How to Increase Memory Power | Tips to Improve Memory The following are a few tips to keep in mind to increase memory power: 1. Improve memory by making associations: Studying, remembering and articulating on a wide range of topics can be done in an effective manner by making associations. Ensure that you relate key points and topics by making associations. For example, consider the study of the modern periodic table. It is important to go through the elements in a group in a periodic table and see in what way they are associated because they are grouped together. You can make an association such as elements in a group have the same number of valence electrons. You will also find that the majority of elements are metals in the periodic table and are towards the left. The non-metals are towards the right and separated by the metals by a few metalloids in a zigzag pattern. Students can then make associations with the properties of metals, non-metals and metalloids to ensure that they study the topic in-depth and remember key points and details. Drawing your own rough mini periodic table, with a few relevant groups, valence electrons, atomic numbers and position of metals, non-metals and metalloids also help in strengthening the associations made. Visual aids and mind maps are memory-enhancing techniques to ensure that the associations made stay long term. 2. Improve memory with the help of your imagination and creativity: Remembering important names, dates, etc., can be done by using one’s imagination and creativity. This can make memorizing seemingly monotonous facts and figures pretty interesting and fun too. For example, you can hum a patriotic tune as you learn about some historical event, draw a few details, enact some scenes or even make up a nonsense story and associate it with what you want to remember. Imagination and creativity form a huge part of memory techniques and can make monotonous details fun to remember and then articulate.
  • 11. 10 By: Pralhad & Padma DHUMAL 10. Importance of Taking a Study Break | How to Take a Study Break With examinations, tests and assessments forming a significant part of student life, it is important that students take the much-needed study breaks in between study sessions. Sometimes, they may find that study breaks keep on extending. Here are a few suggestions regarding study breaks. However, each student has to go by their own unique needs keeping in mind certain suggestions and guidelines. Importance of Taking a Study Break A study break will rejuvenate the mind and ensure that concentration levels are maintained at optimum levels. Without taking adequate breaks, fatigue will set in. The extra time spent studying will be wasted as the student is not concentrating. Thus, study breaks are crucial for revising and studying in an effective manner. At the same time, if students do not plan study breaks properly, they may end up spending more time taking breaks than studying! How to Take a Study Break 1. Prepare a study planner with study breaks included: Ensure that the study planner or study time-table includes study breaks. For 40 minute study sessions, 5 to 10 minute breaks help rejuvenate the mind. 2. Allot a few hours per week for a complete break from study sessions: A few hours in a weekend or a weekday can be spent simply relaxing or doing other hobbies apart from studying. This will ensure that students are completely refreshed when they resume study sessions. 3. Get some fresh air and exercise during a study break: While taking a study break, students can go for a short stroll and also go outdoors and get some fresh air. 4. Eat healthy food, avoid junk food and get adequate hydration: Eating healthy food, avoiding junk food and getting adequate hydration are all important things to remember while taking a study break. Taking care of one’s health is very important for enhancing concentration, so eating smartly and keeping oneself hydrated is vital. 5. Avoid watching TV shows or napping during study breaks: Watching TV shows during study breaks can be very distracting. Students will lose focus and will not be able to come back refreshed. Napping during study breaks should also be avoided as students will become drowsier if they do that. Students should ensure that they get sufficient sleep, at least 8 hours per day, so that they are not fatigued during study sessions.
  • 12. 11 By: Pralhad & Padma DHUMAL 11. Why is it Important for Students to Learn about Entrepreneurship? What is entrepreneurship? Entrepreneurship is the process of forming an enterprise, business or organization. It involves putting forward a viable concept, product or business model. Why is it Important for Students to Learn about Entrepreneurship? Entrepreneurship and different business models are a part and parcel of the current society. It is important for students to learn about the dynamics involved in entrepreneurship in the current scenario. All the products that students see around them and the human activity all around them is also largely due to the dynamics involved in entrepreneurship, economic systems and different business models. Entrepreneurship and start-ups are buzz words in today’s society. However, it takes a lot of planning, in-depth study, risk analysis, patience, a synergistic team and adequate funding to establish a viable enterprise. With knowledge about entrepreneurship, students can think of later starting their own start-up ventures. They can also think of ways of ensuring that it is done in a humane and eco-friendly manner. By doing tiny entrepreneurial projects within a small community, students can hone their entrepreneurial skills. Groups who are passionate about a concept or product can get together and see how it can become a part of an entrepreneurial establishment. For example, if a group is passionate about making eco-friendly toys for children, they can brainstorm and implement the plan in the form of an entrepreneurship within a tiny community. In this way, they will be able to hone their entrepreneurial skills and take it further accordingly. Students can also join business incubator programs which focus solely on start-ups and new companies. In this way, they will be able to get the support and practical expertise required to take their ventures forward. By learning about entrepreneurship, students can empower themselves to deal with the complexities of business ecosystems. They can also help establish more sustainable, humane and eco-friendly ventures. Moreover, if students join an organization, they will have better understanding of the complexities involved in the business culture that they are part of. Thus, learning about entrepreneurship with ample importance given not only to theory but also practical experience will ensure that students are well equipped to be part of the entrepreneurial revolution of the future. 12. Choosing the right supplementary study material for your child Competition is everywhere and dominates academics more than anywhere else. One can find themselves caught in the rat-race to excel in academics and also extracurricular. When it comes to academics, all parents are very particular that their ward must score well. Till a couple of years back, books and teachers were the only means by which a child could learn, but now that’s not the case anymore. There are many educational service providers who have come up to help parents and students find supplementary learning materials to enhance knowledge. Supplementary learning materials help the child understand the concepts and topics in a better way through animations, videos, activities etc. Not only will this enhance their knowledge, but also makes it a convenient
  • 13. 12 By: Pralhad & Padma DHUMAL way to learn. Let us first understand the various supplementary learning materials that are available in the market. 1. CDs and DVDs – one of the most commonly found products in the market are the CDs and DVDs. One can find them for every class, subject and Board of education. One has to be very careful while choosing the same because of the quality of content in the products. Choose the company that is well established in the educational services sector. 2. Worksheets and workbooks – these are mainly aimed to help children in the lower classes(KG1-Class4) to improve their spellings, reading, ease of a particular topic etc. These are printed in bright attractive colors to please the child. One can also find puzzles and color it pages to keep the children interested in them. 3. Online tutoring – yes, you can consider this also as one of the supplementary learning materials available for children. This is similar to tuitions conducted in a coaching center, except that the child does not have to move out of the comfort of their home to learn. Sitting at home a child can get help with any academic related query. 4. Online tests – this is yet another product that many service providers have developed. Children can check their understanding of a particular concept/topic by taking up tests in the same. There are many online tests available that cater to the students’ individual needs. It might look like very few products are available as supplementary learning materials, but due to their vast nature (class, subject, board of education) one can come across hundreds of them in the market. It can also be seen that a couple of the service providers who have established themselves, do not market their products in the free market. Instead they encourage purchasing their products online through their website, making it easy for customers to buy. 13. Surya Namaskar for better score in academics Surya Namaskar- the name translates to salutation to the sun and is being followed by us from a very long time. India, being a land of many traditions and beliefs, we follow many practices which are aimed at improving our inner-self. One such practice is Surya Namaskar, which helps us revitalize and relax ourselves. Students all over the country are busy in their preparation for the upcoming exams. They are stressed out and would be happy to know about some methods by which they can relax, improve concentration and also boost their spirits up. One of the easiest ways is by practicing Surya Namaskar on a daily basis. Surya Namaskar is a combination of 12 different postures (asanas) that is very well described in ancient yoga. Surya Namaskar is usually done at the start of the day, which is very relaxing to everyone who performs it. It is considered as a mild exercise to start the day with. So what does this Surya Namaskar do? With every session of Surya Namaskar, one can find that it lowers the stress level of a person, increases concentration (meditation is a part of this session), reduces anxiety in students, removes fear and improves self-esteem of a person. All this, of course, does not come with practicing just for a day. These sessions must be regularly practiced and followed to be able to reap the benefits. 14. Increase confidence during exam Exams give away a fear that hampers a student’s confidence. I find many students complaining of losing their confidence just a few days before the exams and wanting to know of ways to get their confidence up and running again. Regaining the lost confidence is possible by introducing a couple of changes in your study. Here are some changes that can help you build your confidence and score better during the exams. 1. Practice previous years’ question papers – yes, taking a look at the question papers of past years and working on them can help you understand the pattern that is being followed. Also, one can know the frequently asked questions from certain topics, making them important in your study schedule. For example: In science, one knows that by default the diagram of a flower, heart or kidney is commonly asked (this depends on the class, so I am being generic). 2. Time your tests – every time you work on a concept, timing it would help you understand where you stand, in terms of understanding and recalling of the same. Also, in subjects like mathematics, it helps you build your strength on the concepts and also completing the exams within the stipulated time.
  • 14. 13 By: Pralhad & Padma DHUMAL 3. Give yourself mock tests – giving yourself mock tests will not only increase your understanding of the subject, but also your confidence. 4. Eat, sleep and breaks – the most important part of preparing for the exams involves in eating well, sleeping up to 7hrs and taking appropriate breaks while studying. While many consider that continuous studying is the only way to success, they are wrong. The body burns more energy while studying, because most of what we eat is being used up by the brain to process and retain the information. It is therefore necessary that you eat well for your brain, give it enough rest and breaks. 5. Do not think too much about the exams – there is nothing to think about the exams constantly. Relax. Exams are a means to judge your understanding of the subjects and concepts and therefore the more you think about it, the more you will seem to forget all that you have studied. Exam tension, exam anxiety or nervousness is all part of growing up. Most of this feeling comes from our mindset and pressure that comes from our family and teachers. Try to keep this at bay and you will do fine in your exams. 15. Last minute exam prep tips Exams are a means to judge ones’ understanding of the concepts that is being learnt over a period of time. This is also a time when students are more anxious about the various elements that surround the exams – topics to be covered, revision to be completed, previous years’ papers to be looked at etc. It is therefore important that you have sufficient rest before even thinking about your studies and exams. The more you think about your exams, the more you are going to be tensed, therefore stop thinking about it and concentrate on your studies. 2. Mental preparation – a strong mind can help in dealing with tension and last minute preps easily. Any student must mentally prepare himself/herself to study well with an aim of scoring better. 3. Time in hand – keeping the time in hand, prepare yourself a schedule which can help you give time for all the tasks and subjects equally. Do not forget to give time for breaks in your schedule as this will give your mind the time to recall all that you have studied. 4. Study notes – every time you study or go through a concept, quickly make a note of it in the way you can understand better. Not only will this information be imprinted in your memory, but also help you revise at a later date. 5. Eat healthy – there are certain foods which can help you stay active and enhance your memory, while carbohydrate rich foods can put you to sleep. Choose the right kind of food that can help you stay active throughout your study period. 6. Listen to the concepts – another best way to cover a lot of concepts in a short time frame is to listen to them. These days, there are CDs available in the market which is specifically designed to meet the student’s needs (such as our own Edurite Scoremore CDs) and can help in better retaining of information. Constant listening can help imprint the same in the memory. 7. Check for important topics – teachers will always be able to guide students on some of the important topics. Be sure to make a note of them and give it a little extra time. 8. Previous year’s papers – previous year’s papers will help students reduce the anxiety that arises with every exam. Not only will this be able to give you a brief idea of the structure, but also helps you reduce the anxiety. Last minute preparation is never advisable to any student, unless there has been an unavoidable circumstance.
  • 15. 14 By: Pralhad & Padma DHUMAL 16. Fixing a fight All of us have friends who we consider as the best people to share our thoughts and feelings. Not always is a relationship with a friend filled with fun and excitement. There can also be a time when friends have a fight, resulting in pain and hurt which one is unable to tolerate. Fights between friends are normally resolved in a day or two and is always a good idea to do the necessary to maintain that bond. Here are a few ways to fix a fight with your friend. 1. Write a note to your friend, enquiring about them; send a nice card, bunch of flowers etc to let your friend know that you are thinking about him/her. This makes for a good start to fix the fight. 2. Understand the reasons that caused you and your friend to fight. There must be some reason which provoked a fight, resulting in a healthy relationship being spoiled. If you find that you are at fault, apologize to your friend. Friends usually forgive each other. 3. Talk to your friend after the fight, putting the fight behind you. A simple hug or hand shake means that there you want to move ahead. Most of us prefer to forget about the fights which take place and move forward. Friends too would love to move ahead, without any grudge or feelings of revenge. 4. If the fight has caused deep harm, then it’s important that you talk about it with your friend. The only way to move ahead without any negative feelings or bad thoughts is to talk about it and resolve the issue. Explain how you have felt and how much it has hurt you and also seek clarifications (if needed) on why this happened. If the other person is a really valuable friend, then he/she will help you understand their point of view, after which you will feel relaxed. All of us have had fights with our friends. The earlier it is resolved, the better it becomes to move ahead. 17. Fight between parents can result in harming the child One of the most stressful periods in a child’s life is when his/her parents fight. It is always said that a parent- child bond is a very important element in the proper development of the child. Constant fight between parents can result in harming the child’s development. Many parents do not realize the effects that their fights can have on children. It is only when the situation gets out of hand that they realize. Here’s how it affects the child. 1. Fight among parents usually results in irritation and controlling attitude towards the child. The controlling attitude leads to the parents being unfair to the child in terms of discipline and upbringing, where their view is expressed as the best one. 2. Children become very sensitive towards their parents’ fights, getting them to be withdrawn from the person. 3. Children are neglected and avoided as a result of parents’ fights. Parents seem to be engrossed in matters of their fights that they fail to realize the needs of their children. 4. Constant fights between parents leads to insecurity feelings in the child. The feeling of a parent leaving them is the reason for the insecurity. 5. Children become more prone to violence and anger. Since they are surrounded by an atmosphere of negative thoughts, the same creeps over them, making them vulnerable to violence. Children do not have any hard feelings against their parents and they only want an environment of love and care to be showered on every member of the family. This sweet feeling is crumpled down with constant fights, which parents must try to avoid.
  • 16. 15 By: Pralhad & Padma DHUMAL 18. Importance of Taking a Break from Technology Technology has become all pervasive. Children are very tech-savvy and love gadgets. Many of the adults around them also seem to be addicted to technology. When students go to school, they are increasingly being taught through smart boards. They use desktops and laptops at home to enhance their learning. The benefits of technology in learning are many and help children learn in a fun and engaging manner. However, it is also important to take a break from technology and rediscover life’s simple joys. The following are a few things that parents and children can rediscover by taking a short break from technology: 1. Connecting with natural surroundings: When children and parents visit natural surroundings without any gadgets, they will be able to observe and tune themselves to natural wonders in an enhanced manner. They will also be spending more time building their camaraderie with their friends or family members. 2. Family bonds get strengthened: If parents are continually checking emails or browsing through a website or on the mobile phone at home, they will not be able to give the required attention to their child. If they are addicted to technology, taking a technology break will ensure that they slowly achieve a balance and use technology more judiciously. They will be surprised to find that family bonds are strengthened and that they have great moments with their child. 3. Discovering new hobbies: Children will be able to discover new hobbies like singing, dancing, sports and art if they take a break from technology. The time spent playing a game on the tablet or doing activities through digital media will be spent discovering interesting hobbies without an overdose of technology. By taking a technology break, children will be able to have a more balanced set of hobbies. 4. Spending more time outdoors and playing outdoor games: Taking a break from technology will also ensure that children spend more time outdoors. They will discover the good old running games and also spend their time with neighborhood friends. After the technology break, they will find that they are not spending as much time indoors playing video games. They will enjoy outdoor sports and games and become healthier. 19. Encouraging Students to Learn in the Midst of Nature Encouraging students to learn in the midst of nature and revere nature will help them develop a lifelong spiritual connection with Earth. This will help them in their overall health and well being. It will also help them to grow spiritually, mentally and emotionally. It is important to take students on nature walks and to botanical gardens and parks. Identifying the different flora and fauna that grow in a particular ecosystem can also be part of the nature walk. This will help them to appreciate and revere the biodiversity around them. Students can also be encouraged to draw or sketch flora and fauna and the scenery around them. Nature photography is another activity which students can learn with expert mentors. Poetry and music sessions can also be held in parks and gardens on nature themes.
  • 17. 16 By: Pralhad & Padma DHUMAL This will help students connect with nature and develop a healthy aesthetic and spiritual reverence for nature. William Wordsworth, Rabindranath Tagore and many other famous and brilliant poets, litterateurs as well as artists were inspired by nature. In fact, there is a creative and spiritual spirit in all of us. By relaxing in the midst of nature and revering nature, our creative and spiritual side can be expressed to the fullest. Moreover, when students are encouraged to learn in the midst of nature, they will become more relaxed and will be able to do well in other activities. With rapid industrialization and commoditization of the earth and everything around us, human beings are becoming more and more disconnected with the natural environment. Thus, it becomes even more important to encourage students to learn in the midst of nature and revere the natural environment. By connecting with the earth, one will be aware of the healing and rejuvenating aspects of our heavily exploited planet. Students will be much more inclined to move towards sustainable development when they learn in the midst of nature and revere it. This will in turn help them explore healthier and eco-friendlier lifestyles and ways of being. When educators help in nurturing an earth- sensitive worldview, they can help bring about a revolution among students to move towards a more sustainable future. 20. Importance of Social Science | Why Study Social Science? Social science was earlier pushed to the margins of all the academic subjects that were studied. Moreover, it was considered a boring subject with dry details to be remembered. It still remains so for some students as educational reforms take time to set in. With education reforms, social science textbooks and the teaching and studying of social science reflect a sea change with real-life examples, case studies and other thoughtful inputs. With smart interactive boards, many historical events can be studied in an engrossing manner through the effect of multimedia. Practical projects ensure that students enhance their problem-solving skills when studying topics under social science. Under this changing scenario, let us discuss the importance of social science. Importance of Social Science | Why Study Social Science? 1. Deepens understanding of the world from social, historical, economic, civil, political and geographic perspectives: When students study social science, students will be able to better understand the world through multiple perspectives that have helped shape the world as it is today. Even though students may not realize it, day to day life has been influenced by topics which are studied in social science. For example, if students are studying about consumer rights in India, they can rest be assured that they are protected against consumer-related crimes and negligence due to the Consumer Protection Act of 1986 as they can seek redressal for any serious grievances and danger to life. Due to this, instances like food poisoning, medical-related negligence or crime, faulty appliances, faulty engineering and constructions have largely reduced. 2. Helps bring about positive reforms in society: The study of social science is important as it sensitizes students to the numerous socioeconomic problems that society is facing. Instead of simply being complacent, feeling helpless or becoming overwhelmed, studying social science helps students to bring about positive reforms in society. Millions of people who struggled and fought so bravely to free India from the clutches of British imperialism exemplify social science in action. Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr. Ambedkar and other prominent figures of the Indian freedom struggle studied many social science topics in depth and applied them in a practical manner. Many post-colonial social activists and thinkers worldwide have also brought about positive reforms by deeply imbibing and reflecting on many topics studied under social science
  • 18. 17 By: Pralhad & Padma DHUMAL 21. Why are School Uniforms Necessary? School uniforms are a part and parcel of schooling in India. It is very much necessary in a country like India where there are gnawing socioeconomic disparities. Provisions are sometimes made to provide free school uniforms to children from poor backgrounds. With a uniform dress code in school, all students from different socioeconomic backgrounds can concentrate on the joy of learning without having to worry about their dress. It helps to create a “level playing field” at least in school spaces in a country where disparities can be more than glaring. However, the sad reality is that quality schooling in India is privatized and out of the reach of many poorer children. In a global consumer culture with its overemphasis on superficiality, school uniforms also ensure that childhood is not largely invaded by this culture. In many developed countries, people in favor of school uniforms state that it helps lay emphasis on inner qualities and thoughts, words, and action rather than mere outward appearance. This becomes more important in the school-going days as children can be more vulnerable and impressionable. With regards to the school uniform itself, there may be some objections to certain practices involving uniforms like wearing ties and even shoes and socks on hot summer days when students are in class. There can be modifications made to ensure that uniforms are comfortable, smart and sensible and take into consideration environmental factors. School uniforms also add to the sense of safety and security within a school. In certain schools, the practice of allotting one day for wearing “color dress” is in force. This can help to ensure that students are not completely overwhelmed by having to wear a school uniform day in and day out in school. A “color dress” day once in a week can also be more exciting rather than having no uniforms at all. People who are in favor of abolishing uniforms state that it brings about conformity and fits children into a particular mold. However, those who are in favor state that even without uniforms, there may be peer pressure, especially among teenagers, to adhere to certain fashions or styles apart from other socioeconomic pressures. Well, whatever be the debate about school uniforms, they will continue to form one of the indelible memories of school life in India for years to come

The term “homeschooling” is used when children are educated by parents and tutors at home instead of being sent to a formal school. Homeschooling is an endeavor which parents may take up in order to educate their children after careful thought, planning and consideration. Children who are homeschooled may then take up public school exams in class 10 and 12 as independent candidates. It is a very rare practice with US figures for homeschooling being around 3% in 2007. In some countries, it is illegal. The most famous person who was homeschooled was Thomas Alva Edison. In fact, young Thomas was dubbed as being unintelligent by his teacher. This prompted Thomas to be pulled out of a formal school and to be homeschooled by his mother. Thomas Alva Edison later ended up being one of the greatest inventors and invented the electric light bulb. Thomas Alva Edison had this to say of his beloved mother who had a deep faith and confidence in him, “My mother was the making of me. She was so true, so sure of me; and I felt I had something to live for, someone I must not disappoint.” On this note, let us have a short discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of homeschooling. Advantages of Homeschooling 1. Provides one-on-one attention to learners in the comfort of home: Homeschooling enables parents and tutors to provide one-on-one attention to learners in the comfort of home. Individual attention may help children learn concepts in a better manner. 2. Creates deeper and stronger bonds between parents and children: Homeschooling may result in fostering a stronger and more meaningful relationship between parents and children. The children may look up to their parents as their friend, philosopher and guide. 3. Gives learners more freedom to explore and learn different concepts: With no undue pressure to complete any prescribed curriculum, homeschooled children may be able to learn at their own pace and also learn concepts at a deeper level. Field trips and projects done by homeschoolers may be after an interesting discussion which can further create enthusiasm in children. 4. Helps students become independent learners: Students can become more self-driven and independent learners as a result of homeschooling. Disadvantages of Homeschooling 1. Miss interaction and socialization with a large group of students: Homeschoolers will miss interacting and socializing with a large group of students. They may miss the special bonds that can be forged with a diverse and larger group of peers. They may also miss the special insights and inputs that can be given while interacting with peers. 2. Miss expert teachers and state-of-the-art facilities provided by schools: Expert teachers and facilitators for a diverse range of subjects may expose children to a lot more learning and insights than what a homeschooling setup can do. Parents who opt for homeschooling of their children have to go to great lengths to provide adequate exposure in diverse fields from music to sciences. 3. Parents may find that they have little time for themselves: Homeschooling can be daunting, even though it can be rewarding as well. Parents may find that almost all their time is spent in ensuring that the learning inputs provided at home is of above average standards. This can sometimes drain the energy of parents. Sometimes, parents may also have to singlehandedly deal with pangs of teenagers and also a few instances of fussing, aggression or tantrums.
  • 20. 19 By: Pralhad & Padma DHUMAL 23. Is Homework Necessary for Students? | The Pros and Cons of Homework Homework and the necessity of homework has been a subject of debate in many countries. In India, homework has always been an integral part of school life. Earlier, the nature of homework leaned towards rote learning and memorization of questions and answers. With a slew of educational reforms that have been introduced in India, teachers are slowly being encouraged to provide homework that encourages critical thinking and innovative skills among students. However, the debate still carries on regarding homework. The following is a short discussion regarding homework. Is Homework Necessary? The Pros of Homework 1. Provides sufficient practice and reinforcement of concepts: The adage “Practice makes perfect” is very much true for any learning activity. When students learn about a concept, only if they have opportunities for sufficient practice will they be able to learn the concept well. In mathematics, sufficient practice will ensure that students do not do “careless” mistakes and also complete a theory question paper on time. The same can be translated to other subjects. With the vast syllabus that needs to be covered, homework allows students to reinforce what is studied in class. 2. Helps students develop study skills and time management: Homework invariably helps students develop study skills. It also helps them to practice time management. When homework is given, students already have carefully planned and researched study resources that can guide them in their journey of learning. Moreover, quality time may be spent in learning that might be diverted towards passively absorbing the superficial and degrading stuff shown on some TV and entertainment programs. Also, homework helps students develop time management skills as they learn how to use trackers and timetables. Study skills and good time management skills prepare students well for future endeavors. 3. Encourages self-study and also helps involve family members in the learning process:Homework encourages students to become good independent learners. At the same time, it also encourages family members to take an interest in a child’s or student’s learning process. Parents may be able to provide valuable inputs and suggestions. The Cons of Homework 1. Increases stress levels in students: If schools overwhelm students with homework and assignments, stress levels among students can increase. They may feel pressurized, and the joie de vivre that learning needs to provide becomes diluted. 2. Time for play and simple relaxation gets reduced: Children earlier used to spend a lot of time playing outdoors. Nowadays, with growing amounts of homework even in the primary level along with tuition classes, children hardly find time to play outdoors. Spending quality time with family members is also reduced if a child is given too much homework. 3. Quality of learning may get diminished: If parents “spoon-feed” children while doing homework, the quality of learning may get diminished. Also, if students do not properly research, think and present an assignment in their own words but instead resort to copying or cheating, then the quality of learning by the student and learning outcome gets diminished.

From making tiny workable models to using art for reinforcing a concept, art can be a great way to make learning interesting and exciting. The following are a few pointers on the importance of art in enhancing academic learning. Importance of Art for Enhancing Academic Learning 1. Enhances and gives a vivid understanding of concepts: Simple art forms like origami and the South Indian floor design Kolam can be used to learn various concepts in geometry and mathematics. Every art form incorporates concepts in mathematics and science. In all subjects, simple models made from eco-friendly or recyclable materials help students understand concepts better. For example, if students are learning about volcanoes, they can make tiny models with the help of the teacher. By making such 3D models, students will be able to understand the concept in a vivid manner. 2. Helps students remember concepts better: When art is used to learn a concept, students will remember the concept better and for a longer period as the learning then becomes linked to art. For example, if students are learning about the water cycle, making drawings and diagrams of the water cycle will ensure that they remember the concept better than mere reading. This may not seem like art, but any drawing, however, simple incorporates art. 3. Makes learning more fun and improves fine motor skills and concentration: Learning a concept becomes more fun if students can make tiny art pieces while learning a concept. They will also be able to concentrate better and fine motor skills also improve as a result of doing art. Even for teaching simple concepts in grammar, a simple origami item or ribbon art can be made while using the parts of speech that needs to be practiced. This will make learning all the more fun and also improves concentration and fine motor skills. Similarly, art can be used in any subject to make learning more fun and interesting and enhance energy and concentration levels.
  • 22. 21 By: Pralhad & Padma DHUMAL 25. Importance of Drama for Enhancing Education/the Learning Process Drama, acting and role-playing different scenes and situations is a wonderful way of enhancing education and the learning process. Encouraging students to enact a scene or situation will ensure that the student understands and remembers certain topics in a better manner. The following is a short discussion on the importance of drama in education. Importance of Drama for Enhancing Education/the Learning Process 1. Creates further interest in the topic of study: Historical topics and some literature topics can be further studied and discussed with the help of drama. Students will become more interested in a historical or literature topic if they are able to enact certain scenes. Even subjects like mathematics and science become more interesting with enactments and some drama added to the learning. For example, in science, if students are learning about electricity, a small enactment on Thomas Alva Edison’s life and how he invented the light bulb will be inspiring and motivating. 2. Helps students remember and understand topics better: If scenes from the freedom movement are enacted or any other historical topic, students will be better able to remember details. In a large classroom, students can be divided into groups, and each student will be able to enact a small component of a large play. This will help them to get into the skin of different characters and help them understand the different scenes and situations the characters face. Students will be better able to empathize with different characters as a result of dramatization. They may also be better able to understand concepts if they are studied with the help of drama. 3. Helps students become more sensitive and empathetic: Social studies, history and literature if taught with the help of drama will help students develop greater sensitivity and empathy towards characters. Instead of just reading about the characters, when students do an enactment, they are better able to understand the thoughts, feelings and emotions of characters as they face different situations. 4. Helps enhance creative thinking: Dramatization helps students enhance creative thinking skills. Students will be encouraged to think a little more about the character and the situation. They may also come up with interesting discussions and reflections after the dramatization. They may be inspired to come up with innovative ideas as a result of dramatization or enactment while studying a topic.

Parenting styles must depend on the child’s personality and not on the parent’s thinking. There were days when the child used to sit when asked to and stand when asked to. These days’ it is not possible as the children ask a lot of questions, some of which cannot be explained to them easily. It is therefore important for a parent to identify the child’s personality and work towards disciplining them in the right manner. Kiersey Bates system is one of the oldest, popular and useful systems which helps identify the child’s personality type and base the parents’ parenting style on it. Based on the Kiersey Bates system, there are 16 personality types which can be broadly divided into 4 groups that are easy to remember. They are: 1. Guardians – the personality group of guardians amount to 40-45% of the population. A guardian child wants security, rules and regulations, dependability and financial soundness. A child of this personality type cares a lot if parents keep up their promises and value the same to help the child in understanding the rules and regulations. He/she also likes to be nurtured with values and traditions which are meaningful to them. 2. Artisans – a child who is expressive, imaginative, creative and spontaneous and is willing to continue with any skill/talent/sport is known as an ‘artisan child’. Such children excel in athletics and good in performance. Children in this personality type are less attentive towards activities which involve rules and regulations and scheduling, such as finance, homework etc. Artisan children like to enjoy their life, without worrying much about anything else and appreciate when their parents go along with them in this thought. 1. Idealist – children in this personality type are very sensitive. They are hurt when there is a conflict in the family or criticized by others for their behavior etc. Such children like to impress others, enjoy in a positive environment at home and are helpful most of the time. Idealist children like to be listened to, given importance, appreciate their work etc. These children must be parented with care and any harsh treatment meted out to them can result in them becoming depressed. 2. Rational – a rational child values logic and fairness. Children in this group like to constantly improve themselves, look for better ways to work, is self-determined, independent at a very early age and prefers to choose their own style of dressing, reading and learning. Injustice and unfair behavior meted out is never forgiven. Every parent must first identify their child’s personality type and then work towards parenting the child. 27. Parenting tips for healthy habits in kids Health is without a doubt one of the most important aspects of any student’s life. Not being in good health tends to affect a number of areas of a child’s life, including their learning, memory and performance. The important thing to do in a classroom is to be able to provide the correct tools and learning to the students to enable them to lead a well-balanced life. The healthy habits in children will have to be begun at an early age so as to enable them to have a complete learning experience. In addition, the process of incorporating learning and experience together can help in making the habits lifelong. Beginning them at school gives them the opportunity to practice clean living in a better way. Washing hands, face and also bathroom etiquette are all things that have to be inculcated from an early age on. Beginning these at kindergarten level will enable the students to have healthy and clean habits as they grow.

They have simply been born different and require some additional assistance to be able to achieve results like their other counterparts. Children recognize differences and learn to fear or isolate them from an early age. This tends to make things quite difficult to deal with for a teacher or parent. Having a child who is differently abled or with special needs can be quite challenging. There will be many questions, sudden unscheduled meetings, difficulties in evaluation and much more can make the equation even more difficult. The important thing to do is to find suitable assistance and also get proper evaluation and testing done so as to ascertain what can be done for your child. You might be feeling particularly alone in the classroom as being the only child with a physical disability. It is not possible to overcome your difficulty instantly and you may be facing challenges with using your computer, performing in class or more. It is important to bring to the notice of your teacher or a parent what is troubling you. There are a number of special aids technologies and tools which can be used to help students with difficulties overcome their problems and also tackle them effectively. Special keyboards with larger and wider spaced letters, cognitive tools, movement based tools and more can be used to make learning more comfortable and easier for kids with special needs. As a parent of a child with disability of some kind, you will have to face many challenges and also need to tackle situations every now and then which are new and also unknown to you previously. It is important to stay calm and patient when dealing with situations and people. Concern for your child’s well-being along with a positive attitude will go a long way in seeing things through. 30. Social strategies to help ADHD kids Attention Deficit Hyperactivity disorder or Attention Deficit Disorder is a condition that affects a large number of kids. It is important to understand that these kids need special attention and assistance to help them cope and overcome the difficulties faced. Here are some strategies to work on the situation: The inclusion of the student with the ADD is important to give them a feeling of being with their peers and not being targeted. These kids often face rejection and isolation and the class as a whole should be made sensitive to accepting and not smothering the student. Discuss or present a social situation to make the class and the students understand. Another activity to have is to have the kids complete the situation by suggesting possible resolutions to the social judgment. Also discuss consequences and actions. Encourage social interactions between students but do not push too much against individual boundaries. Repeated exposure and experience will lead to the student eventually being able to generalize the skills acquired. Monitor the social interactions and reactions of the kids. It is very easy for kids to flare up or make decisions to treat someone differently. If it happens in your notice, as a teacher or parent try to involve the students with differences together to arrive at the root of the matter.
  • 26. 25 By: Pralhad & Padma DHUMAL Give positive strokes to the whole class and make each student do it and receive it. This is appropriate for all ages, have each student come up to the front and then every other member say two positives about that student. It’s a feel good task and also definitely boosts the child’s self-esteem. Set up behavioral goals with the students. Not every child would be able to understand and pick up easily when they have ADD or ADHD. It is important to break down larger tasks into smaller goals and achievements before finalizing on targets to be achieved 31. Tackle your subjects and improve grades Grades are without a doubt one of the most important aspects of a student’s life. As a student I would always feel like I could do exceptionally well on subjects I like and those I did not like would invariably be ones with poor scores and eventually my entire performance would get affected. That is when I realized that I need to buck up and improve my grades or face being at the bottom of class. To begin the path to academic success and better grades at subjects I did not like, I had to overcome my dislike for the subject. It was more to do with the teacher than the subject was a fact I arrived at when I did some thinking. The challenge lay in proving that teacher wrong about her evaluation of me and approaching things this way changed my perspective. This was how I began to do well in Math, a subject that until then I had dreaded working on. Another problem I frequently faced was trying to cram too many difficult ideas at once in the end. I realized I had been pushing the more difficult sections of my portions to later until at last it would turn a mountain out of a molehill! I resolved to tackle the complex and difficult issues and topics at the beginning and work my way out of things. This made my subjects get easier! My next nemesis was remembering the many terms and elements in biology and chemistry. The best answer I found to both these problems was to use memory tricks and techniques. Improving memory I learnt is a lifelong process. It’s about focus, attention, preparation and application of the mind. I began to make up rhymes, acronyms and also visualizing as I was learning. Soon I could recall much better and I continued to improve in performing on my tests. Learning can be fun, if you want it to be. It gets dreary to read text after text sometimes, so switch to images and animated videos online to make learning an interesting process! 32. Technology for special needs Although kids with special needs form a minor part of the population, having adequate facilities for this category of individuals is also important. Students with disabilities have to encounter many difficulties in learning and reaching their goals. However technology has been bridging the gaps considerably. Still people who are physically disadvantaged face a variety of troubles and barriers that need to overcome. A number of tools are available in the market which helps people tackle the troubles presented by standard operation. Assistive or adaptive technologies have gone quite a long way in making things far easier. A seemingly simple obstacle many students face is with regard to the height to the computer monitor or inability to use hands properly to use the keyboard or the mouse. It is important to find equipment that has ample flexibility and will allow the students maximum mobility. There are also equipments available to accommodate and help with the disabilities people have to tackle. Individuals who have access to a single head stick or pointing device will be able to use the pressing keys with
  • 27. 26 By: Pralhad & Padma DHUMAL the pointing device. Sticky keys options allow people to use options where otherwise multiple keys have to be pressed at once. Having disk guides or appropriate positioning of the keyboards, monitors and so on can help to make it easier for people to perform various tasks and activities. Expanded keyboards with wider space between the keys, replacement of mouse and keyboards, left handed or right handed keyboards are all available to assist people with disabilities. There are unique keyboards in place which have been designed for kids without enough fingers, those who have learning disability or are visually impaired. There is a cognitive enhancement system available for gifted children, those with developmental disability or attention and processing issues. 33. Tips for learning a foreign language Learning a foreign language is a part of nearly every school’s curriculum these days. Students are often given a choice regarding what they want to pick and most schools offer French or Hindi as an optional language. When learning a foreign language, the first step is to have a good teacher. That is when you can get the basics right. Make sure you practice enough or you will tend to forget the rules. Spend time listening to music, watching movies and flipping through magazines of the new language. That way you can slowly pick up on new words, the right intonation and also the right kind of sentence phrasing. Keep asking a native speaker if you know one or your teacher to clarify doubts and work on learning newer words and sentences. Understand the cultural connotations and rules of the new country and the language. For this you will need to learn about customs and traditions and also read as much as you can through books and e-learning materials. As you acquire information you can research better and find out exactly the right kind of information for picking up and speaking the language fluently almost like you have known it all your life. Learn grammar, accents, order of letters, changes in gender, practice verb conjugations and more to acquire expertise in the foreign language. Practice your learning and join a language club where you get to keep improving and trying out your conversational skills as you learn. Practice with others, with batch-mates and also do e-learning audio exercises to master the language and become more proficient at it. Work on flash cards, attend the language lab sessions and make sure you get ample time trying out various words and phrases to gain expertise in the language. 34. Chemistry help for students Learning is a process that is different from individual to individual based on a number of different factors. People perform differently and also learn differently. Good chemistry grades are dependent on a number of different factors. If I had known these tips I bet I could have done much better back then. Here are some secrets that will help you unlock the mysteries of chemistry far more easily. Write it out, you cannot just learn it by heart. Chemistry has its own set of rules, regulations, terms and more. Understanding the basics is important so is learning some things by rote. Practice working on various important problems that elucidate the concepts by writing it out. Spend quality time learning. You can spend time looking at concepts in chemistry running into hours, days and months. It will not really yield results until you have been spending quality time on the subject. You have to pay
  • 28. 27 By: Pralhad & Padma DHUMAL attention and concentrate for an hour and you can achieve results that would otherwise take you hours of repetitive learning. Another important resource to use is chemistry tutorial services or CD’s. There are excellent animated, image rich audio and video content available from top companies like Tutor Vista, Edurite and more which will make you more competent to handle the subject. An online chemistry course is also beneficial if you want greater clarity or a different perspective from a tutor online. Chemistry homework help is also another great online resource to use. Websites like Tutor Next allow people to submit their homework assignments, get detailed step by step solutions and even consult with a tutor should they have any additional doubts regarding the completed work. When learning any subject, no matter how difficult it is, begin with it and get it out of the way. You will feel more confident about tackling your work and also more competent to achieve the results you want to. 35. Helping students live an above average life Ask yourself a simple question- do you think you are an average performer or an above average one? If you are reading on, you probably want to change your life. The key to a better life is at hand, answer some simple questions first. Take a paper and jot down why you are not able to be better, bigger and smarter. This exercise is simple enough, but don’t discard it, let me take you through an example. 2 Individuals, Steve and Bob were asked to list why they think they cannot achieve what they want to. Steve listed: I would want to work on my own than under someone else to achieve my goals I have to find ample resources Attachments to certain events, people, which does not let me leave to achieve Since the reasons listed by Steve, are internal it is possible to change the situation and achieve his full potential. It is always better to have internal factors rather than external ones which are more easily changeable and can be controlled. Bob listed: The facilities in school are inadequate The environment to learn is noisy, has too many people It is difficult to deal with the new subjects in the syllabus Since Bob listed reasons which are external, coping with them and tackling the situation is a difficult process. Having an internal locus of control means knowing the factors affecting your performance are within your control while in case of an external locus of control they are not. When you wish to achieve better grades, better performance and better output you have to be able to change your locus of control to internal and discard the less important external factors that are not within your means to change or alter. So go ahead, change your life today! 36. Teaching concentration to children Teaching children the art of concentration can be difficult since they will not be able to understand the meaning and the importance of it. Some children are seen to have a short attention span and can result in problems while learning and doing homework. This gives rise to the need to help the child understand and focus. Here are some ways by which a parent/teacher can help the child concentrate in the classroom/home. 1. Daily routine – establish a daily routine to study and make learning a part of the daily activity. Allocating a specific time to study will help the child understand the importance of working during that time. This will let
  • 29. 28 By: Pralhad & Padma DHUMAL the child know what to expect at that particular time of the day. This will only help in separating the child’s play time with studies. 2. Suitable place to study – a child must be given a proper place and environment to study. Creating a study section at home and encouraging the child to complete his/her studies will help the child realize its importance. 3. Encourage physical activity – children are confined to a room in school and would feel restless when asked to do their home-work soon after returning. Encouraging physical activities can help them release their energy in a positive manner. Since the mind is relaxed after play, children will be able to concentrate better. 4. Self-control – teach the child self-control by asking him/her to sit in a place without fiddling around. This will help you know how long the child is able to stay focused. Based on this, homework time can be adjusted with breaks. 5. Games – every child loves to play and mental games are helpful in improving one’s memory and concentration. Scrabble, puzzles, etc can help in improving the child’s memory. One can find that there are many memory improving games available for children. 6. Time frame for homework/class work – Set a time frame for the child to complete his/her work. This will give a sense of seriousness to the work done by the child. Supervise and occasionally ask the child for the progress about the work. This will keep the child focused and on track. It will take time for the child to show his/her seriousness towards the studies and therefore a parent needs to be patient. Give the child some time to get used to the new routine established by you 37. Martial arts for better performance in the classroom The greatest wealth is health – Virgil. Health is considered as a priceless gift which we all have. A healthy body, combined with a healthy mind is required for all of us to achieve our goals and success in life. With the emphasis being laid on providing good education to children, most of the parents neglect the need for providing an opportunity for building a healthy body too. Enrolling the child to a martial arts program would have double benefits, by building a healthy body and a healthy mind too. Learning martial arts will not only help the child know the self-defense techniques, but will also help shaping the child’s mind. Here are a few benefits to the child in learning martial arts: 1. Co-ordination: Learning any kind of martial arts will help improve the child’s co-ordination. It will make the child physically stronger and also flexible. 2. Self- discipline: Martial arts learning involves discipline. It is also the most important behavioral characteristic, which any parent would like to imbibe in their child. Every martial arts base their teaching on discipline and as such this will imbibe this trait in children. 3. Self-confident: A child who learns martial arts will be self-confident. The various levels of ranking system, will help the child achieve measurable goals which is realistic to attain. The sense of achievement which a child gets by graduating to another level, will boost his/her confidence and will be permanently imprinted in him/her. 4. Respect: Just as self-discipline is an important part of martial arts, so is respect. Emphasis is laid on respecting one and all in martial arts, which helps the child imbibe this quality. 5. Every class begins with relaxation and concentration exercises, which is very helpful for children to develop their skills. 8. Leadership qualities: Martial arts imbibe qualities of respect, confidence and discipline, which are some of the best leadership qualities, one can expect to find in a person. Learning martial arts will help the children be able to evolve in a much better way and be successful in life. 38. Study breaks for effective studying Studying and study skills are something you may have heard enough and more about. What about study breaks? I’m sure you know that it is always essential to be taking breaks between your classes if you want to be doing well and learning the new content. It is important to take at least one ten minute break for every 50 minutes of time that you spend in studying. Staring at textbook content and presentations for hours together would tire your body and mind as it certainly involves a lot of concentration and effort on the student’s part. Sleeping is an equally important part of study breaks as demonstrated by the ever popular notion of power naps. People will certainly remember more of the content they have learnt when they take a nap post a study session than if they keep cramming all night without any rest. When trying to memorize a certain kind of information make sure that you do it subject wise rather than trying to learn a little of everything. The brain has huge capacity and reserves of memory but when you learn multiple topics at once by fitting them in between ‘breaks’, you are overloading your senses with information. One important thing to do between your studies is to distress yourself. Drink plenty of green tea rather than coffee. It will soothe your system and cleanse your body far better. You can relax in your study location by doing simple breathing exercises or take a short walk in a quiet area to become calmer. The more rest you give your system, the better you will feel to learn. Make sure you do not stay too hungry as well so as to be energetic enough to learn properly. Studying when done in the right manner can be almost fun for the student. 39. Tips to improve concentration There are days when you may be able to solve 20 sums in math in an hour and other days when doing 10 sums itself becomes a chore and a difficult task. No matter which subject it is, results do tend to vary now and then. The key difference between the day you performed exceptionally well and the day you did not is simple, concentration. Concentration is about focusing on one single thing. Often the trouble is that our thoughts tend to travel exceptionally fast and hence focusing on one single thought while your mind is racing with a million thoughts becomes a difficult task. In order to concentrate, observe events and people as they are in a high level of concentration. A classic example would be to observe your friends or just people around you when you are watching a highly popular flick for the first time. Everyone’s eyes would be glued to the screen, their breathing would be lower and for them to notice something else a big distraction would be required. This should tell you what the state of concentration should be like when you sit down with your books next time!
