replace logical reasoning with emotional
decisions. They willingly pledge allegiance
to charismatic leaders who claim to have

theological point of
authority away from God’s

Legalism
Cults teach that eternal life
depends upon something other
than the Atonement
i.e., faith in the atoning,
finished work of Christ
on the cross is deemed
not to be sufficient.

3. No Assurance of Salvation
The issue of a cult member’s
salvation is never settled, but
constantly affected by the changing
circumstances of life; in this way,
cult leaders are able to produce
continued obligation and spiritual
bondage.
4. Guru-Type Leader/
Modern Prophet
The cult leader is looked to as the
infallible interpreter to Scripture,
specially appointed by God to be
a special saint, guru, or
contemporary messiah, and
thereby, has divine authority that
must not be violated.
5. Vacillating, Ambiguous
Doctrine/Spiritual Deception
In order to gain favor with the
public, and thereby aid in the
recruitment of new members, cult
“doctrine” tends to be
characterized by many false or
deceptive claims concerning the
cult’s true spiritual beliefs.
6. Exclusivity from/
Denunciation of Other
Groups
Each cult group, regardless of
what other doctrines are taught,
will all have this one common
idea--
“The Only True Church
Syndrome.”
7.Claims of Special Discoveries/
Additional Revelation
Acceptance of new, contemporary,
continual revelations that either
deny the Bible or are allowed to
explain it.

8. Defective Christology
Cults always have a false view of
the nature of the Person of Jesus
Christ; a cult will usually deny the
true deity of Christ, His true
humanity, His true origin, or the true
union of the two natures in one
Person.

Most cults do not see man as an
immortal being; instead they see
him either as an animal without a
soul or as a being which is being
perfected to the point of becoming a
god.

Cults tend to focus on one verse or
passage of the Bible to the exclusion
of others, without regard for the
context in which Scripture is given

Concerning Life After Death

Covering the gamut from soul sleep to
annihilationism to purgatory to

godhood, cults invariably deny the
existence of a final judgment of, and a
final “resting” place for, the unrighteous.

 Born from a poor family in Pasay City,
Philippines,
 Soriano claim to be an “exceptional,
consistently receiving the highest honors…
and was awarded the highest possible grade
in the entire history of his grade school.”
 Unfortunately, he did not finish his secondary
schooling due to an alleged “skirmish” with
his acting school directress over a topic on
religion

 Soriano’s follower took this not as a “twist of fate but
rather [an alleged] manifestation of God’s work of hand
bringing him to his real destiny.”
 His parents were members of Iglesia ng Dios Kay Kristo
Hesus, Haligi at Suhay ng Katotohanan founded in 1936
by a former Iglesia ni Cristo (1914) follower namely
Nicolaz Perez.
 Perez along with Teofila Ora left the I.N.C. fold in 1922
probably after learning that Jesus Christ was Mighty God
but “not” the Almighty God and proceeded to establish
the Iglesia Verdadero de Cristo.
 It did not took long for the two former leaders of I.N.C.
(1914) to develop discord among themselves. This
occurrence drove Perez to register his new group under
the name, Iglesia ng Dios Kay Kristo Hesus, Haligi at
Suhay ng Katotohanan
 Soriano’s desire to read and memorize the
Scripture was prompted by his
membership in Perez’ group at a young
age of 17 years old. His followers noted of
his “zealous [ness] in his religion.
 His skill in “explaining” and remembering
the Bible verses was noticed by the other
members so that he became “a preacher,
a debater and a minister” of the said
group.
 Unknown to many, he was said rumored to
be groomed as the successor of Perez
after he dies. In 1975 just after Perez’
death, some members were stunned when
the leadership was passed on to Levita
Gugulan, a woman.
 At first, Soriano might have yielded to that
decision but it did not take long before he
along with a few others rebelled against
Gugulan’s leadership.
 They believed that women as leaders in
church are not biblically supported. It was
reported that in 1976, Soriano and his
allies were excommunicated by Gugulan.
 And the following year (1977), he
registered a new group namely, Iglesia ng
Dios kay Kristo Hesus, Haligi at Saligan ng
Katotohanan.
 Which later evolved to, Mga Kaanib sa
Iglesia ng Dios kay Kristo Hesus, Haligi at
Saligan ng Katotohanan sa Bansang
Pilipinas, Inc. (1990) and Bayan ng
Katotohanan (1993).
 Most likely because of a lawsuit filed by
Gugulan’s group with reference to the
“name” of Soriano’s newly founded
organization called, Iglesia ng Dios kay
Kristo Hesus, Haligi at Saligan ng
Katotohanan which is somewhat similar
with the former’s group name “Iglesia ng
Dios kay Kristo Hesus, Haligi at Suhay ng
Katotohanan.”
 This episode continues to cause
confrontation between the two religious
groups.
Method of Evangelization
• He spreads his teachings through the
radio waves and lately used the television
and internet facilities.
• He is fond of vehemently opposing various
religious groups by attacking their non-
essential doctrines like tithing and church
appellations, as well as, personalities of a
number of religious leaders.

• One effective methodology of Soriano in
captivating many gullible individuals into
his fold by means of philosophical debates
where he normally sets it up in their home
turf (i.e. locale).
• It can be observed that majority of the live
audiences are from the Ang Dating Daan
group capable of yelling instead of
listening intently to what the opponent
speaker is saying.
• Soriano on the other hand is a skilled
heckler who tends to annoy and harass his
opponent.
 As a result, this poor fellow who has really
no idea totally whatsoever about Soriano’s
tactics will be prompted to either abandon
the subject that he started or just leave the
spiritual arena.
 Many Elisarians will immediately assume
that their self-styled messenger “won” the
religious debate not knowing that it was
just his being a skilled heckler that made
him triumph.
 A Christian apologist needs to be
wary with every statement he
utters because Soriano has a
reputation of focusing on minor
word details propelling him to
neglect the whole subject of the
debate.
Manner of Bible Teaching
• To build an impression with his
members and audience, Soriano
parades himself as a self-styled
Bible teacher who “knew” the
Hebrew and Greek words of the
Scripture.
 Soriano does not subscribed to proper
Bible hermeneutics by studying the
original Hebrew & Greek languages of the
Scripture including it’s geograpical,
historical, cultural and religious
background but condemns it.
 Mainly he is fond of building his doctrine
out of Ang Biblia (a local translation of
ASV) and some English translation rather
than consulting the original languages.
Authority
 Although ADD members claim to believe the Bible as their
only source of authority, this is half-true.
 They also believe Eliseo Soriano is the “sent one” or
“sugo” the reason why he alone does the Bible explaining
(This can be observed by watching his TV program, “Ang
Dating Daan,” and “Itanong Mo Kay Soriano” a bible
exposé program wherein he is always the main speaker
concerning Bible interpretations).
 In other words, an individual member could not just
explain the Bible out of his own personal study.

Unbiblical Beliefs
1. Rejects the Trinity doctrine and believe the following:
Father -- Almighty God and over-all Savior. Greater than the
Son and the Spirit.
Son -- Mighty God but not the Almighty God like His Father.
He is equal to the Father as God but not greater than
the Father because He was sent. Greater than the Holy
Spirit.
Holy Spirit -- part of the Father and the Son and also called
God but not a Person. Aside from believing these “three
Gods,” he also insists that there exist “many gods”
because of 1 Cor. 8:5.
He believes the Father who is the Living God was the overall
Savior who must be given credit for all the things He
has done by sending saviors during the times past
(Hebrews 1:1-2).
2. Believes Jesus is a Mighty God but not the
Almighty God.
• Does not believe that He is the only Savior of
humanity.
• The two kinds of salvation that Jesus will do:
(1) He was sent primarily to be the savior of the
house of Israel (Matthew 15:24) during his
humanity (Matthew 1:21) but he is just one
among the sent ones to be the savior.
(2) On his Second Coming, he will save the believers
(members of Soriano’s group). Moses was also
sent by the Father to become an instrument of
salvation and savior to the Israelites (Acts 7:35-
37), while the Apostle Paul (Acts 13:46-47) was a
savior to the Gentiles up to the ends of the earth.
Timothy was to be the next savior after the
apostle Paul’s death.
3. Jesus the Son of the Living God
also needs a savior who is his
Father, the Living God as
allegedly stated in Hebrews 5:7-9.
• They also believe that Jesus is
God and man (though not fully
man but just “like” man) quoting
Philippians 2:6-7.
4. The meaning of the “house of God” in
Psalms 127:1 during the Old Testament is
“Church of God” (Iglesia ng Dios) and the
name of that church is: Iglesia ng Dios kay
Kristo Hesus, Haligi at Saligan ng
Katotohanan (Church of God in Christ
Jesus. The pillar and the ground of the
truth. Philippines).
• They also believe that a person may be
saved even though he has not heard of
Soriano’s teachings.
• He is judged by God according to his
conscience.

• born to Jose Quiboloy and Maria Carreon,
on April 25, 1950, in a small village at the
foothills of Mt. Apo in Tamayong, Calinan,
Davao City
• the youngest in a brood of 9. Both natives
of Lubao, Pampanga, in Luzon,
Philippines, the couple had migrated to
Davao City in the 1940's, just after the
war, to find a better life.
• At the time of his birth, his mother Maria
saw a vision of the face of God smiling
down at her from the sky seemingly saying
to her, "That is my son..." Maria gave birth
at midnight but it had suddenly become
morning.
• His elder sister saw a big eagle land on
their home the moment he was born.
• There were many unusual occurrences in
his life while he was growing up, but these
he only understood when he grew up.
• When he was 14, Pastor Apollo
dreamt of a horrifying scene from
The Great Tribulation. Flames
were coming down from heaven,
destroying all the inhabitants of the
earth. There was a great
pandemonium. Even the seas
were engulfed by flames. No one
was spared.

• Many times, It is said that Pastor
Apollo heard the voice of God and he
often had dreams, he would realize
that he was being called for a certain
mission.
• After high school, Pastor Apollo went
to Bible College, something which was
not part of his plans. He was still in his
teens when he began traveling around
the Philippines, preaching as much as
seven times a day.

• Because he had the gift of preaching, people
called him a "preaching machine." When
asked about this, he would say that words
would come rushing from him like a well of
water; he had to say the words otherwise he
would burst.
• During that time, his denomination had great
plans for him. He became the National Youth
President.
• In 1974 he went to Korea to attend the World
Conference of the International Youth Corps.
On the last night of the conference, he heard
the voice of God repeatedly telling him during
the altar call, "Gamiton Ta Ka (I will Use You)"
three times.
• This puzzled him. He knew it was the voice
of the Father and also he thought that the
Father was already using him.
• He heard that voice again while waiting at
the airport for a flight to Palawan.
KITBOG: the righteous seed is
implanted
• Circumstances led him to a remote
area called Kitbog, in Malalag, Cogon,
South Cotabato, Philippines.
• For a year, Pastor Apollo lived with the
B'laan people. There he received all
kinds of miracles, visions and
revelations from the Father.
• These miracles and visions were designed
by the Father to convince Pastor Apollo that
it was He who was calling him.
• Kitbog was significant in the life of Pastor
Apollo because it was here that the Father
offered him the spiritual component of
salvation. With his freedom of choice intact,
he surrendered the spirit of obedience
against the will of the Father, the serpent
seed, which was implanted in Adam and
Eve, by making a promise that from now on
Father, not my will but your will be done.
• As a result of this, the righteous seed, the
Spirit of Obedience to the will of the Father,
was implanted in his life.
TAMAYONG: the furnace of
affliction
• When Pastor Apollo made the decision
to follow the Father, he was led to
another mountain, Tamayong.
• Tamayong was a mountain district at the
foothills of Mt. Apo, the country' s tallest
peak. It was also Pastor Apollo's
birthplace.
• In Tamayong, Pastor Apollo was asked to
remain within the perimeter of a one-
hectare lot for five years.
• He describes this period in his life as his
training in the University of the Spirit.
• All the demons of hell were unleashed to try
the righteous seed that growing inside of
him. He was persecuted, maligned,
accused and scoffed at. He was tried in the
flesh, in money, in power.

• Those who severely persecuted and
maligned him were people who knew him –
family, friends, people who he grew up with.
• Among the varied tests he had to undergo
was having nothing else to eat except
bananas. This was his manna for five
years.
• He describes those years as his furnace of
affliction. The Father's intention was to mold
him according to what the Father wanted.
• 1 Corinthians 3:10-13 was fulfilled in his life. It
says, “According to the grace of God which is
given unto me, as a wise master builder, I
have laid the foundation, and another buildeth
thereon. But let every man take heed how he
buildeth there upon.
• For other foundation can no man lay that
that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
• Now if any man build upon this
foundation gold silver, precious stones,
wood hay and stubble;
• Every man's work shall be made
manifest: for the day shall declare it,
because it shall be revealed by fire; and
the fire shall try every man's work of
what sort it is.
• The Tamayong experience was necessary
in order to prove if he really was a true child
of God, as said in Hebrews 5:8 “Though he
were a Son, he learned obedience by the
things that he suffered.”
• All these, he says were designed to perfect
his obedience to the Almighty Father, to
realize that whatever happened to him
there was the Father's will.
THE KINGDOM MINISTRY
• He went back to his denomination a
changed man, the Father's words, name
and His life.
• He was anointed to bear the life of the
Son of God.
• He also brought them the Father's
message of deliverance from the
bondage of denomination and religion.
• Receiving the go signal from the Father,
Pastor Apollo left the denomination with 15
members in September 1, 1985 , and
moved to a place that the Father had
prepared for them.
• The name JESUS CHRIST THE NAME
ABOVE EVERY NAME was revealed to
him by the Father, in accordance with Acts
12.
• Since then the Kingdom ministry has
spread all over the world.

him. “My son, you have been successful in
conducting my business. Your work is
done.”
• This date marked the Appointed Son of
God's official introduction to the world
through the ACQ-Kingdom Broadcasting
Network.

the Day of the Lord
• In April 13, 2005 , the Kingship was
entrusted to Pastor Apollo.
• This day also marked the official
establishment of the Kingdom Nation of
the Father and the beginning of the Day

The Birth of "Jesus" According to Mormonism
In contrast to this, what does Mormonism teach about the
birth of the person they call Jesus Christ? Mormonism
teaches that a god (small "g"), who began as a sinful
man, became the "Father God," took Mary as a wife, and
fathered Jesus in the normal human way. There was no
virgin birth. The Holy Spirit was not involved - and that is
a plain denial of Scripture. And since Joseph was also
Mary's husband, this makes Mary guilty of adultery and
polygamy.
Worse yet, Mormonism teaches that Jesus is the brother of
Lucifer. It teaches that both Jesus and Lucifer were
begotten in the same way, by the act of this false "God the
Father" having a physical relationship with one of his wives.

The SDA Founder
 The SDA teaches that Ellen White possessed a
modern “spirit of prophecy” and that her visions
and writings were divinely inspired interpretations
of scripture.
 Actually, the SDA was built upon the earlier
Millerite Movement (Second Adventism) which
predicted the coming of Christ in 1844 and
Seventh-day Sabbatarianism as taught by Joseph
Bates
 White combined these teachings and established
the SDA movement in the 1850’s. The church was
formally organized in 1863 (Battle Creek, Michigan)
The SDA Skinny...
 SDA is not a classical cult. Instead it is
defined as a Christian sect because it has
many beliefs in common with Christian
doctrine, however, it deviates in a
number of major areas
SDA Scripture Authority
 Affirms the inspiration and authority of
the Bible. They affirm the trinity nature of
the Godhead.
 They agree with standard theology on the
nature of God, Jesus Christ and the Holy
Spirit.
 They affirm Christ was born of a virgin,
lived a sinless life, was crucified, died and
was resurrected in bodily form.

The SDA Remnant Church
 They believe the early Christian church was
corrupted by Roman Catholic priests. One
effect of this was the change of the sabbath
to its present Sunday. They believe they are
the only remnant church practicing true
worship
 Our response. There is no one true church.
No organization can lay title to this claim.
The SDA Sabbath
 They believe the Biblical sabbath should be
maintained on the seventh day of the week
(Friday evening to Saturday evening).
 They believe only those worshipping as they do
are “sealed” against satan
 They believe those worshipping on Sunday as
will ultimately bear the mark of the beast
 Our response: The early Christian church met
on the Lord’s Day, our Sunday. There is no
Biblical requirement for mandatory sabbath
worship. Their stance is legalistic, if not fully
heretical.
SDA Salvation
 They believe in a strict observance of their
sabbath requirement
 They believe in strict adherence to dietary
regulations and abstinence from alcohol,
tobacco and drugs. These are legalistic in
nature and requirement for salvation.
 Our response: salvation is a result of grace,
not any observed act of legalism.
SDA …After Death
 They believe the Holy of Holies is in heaven
and that Christ in 1844 began a 2nd phase of
his atonement
 In this, he examines the dead to see if they are
worthy to be a part of the first resurrection and
who among the living is a true disciple
 Our response: There is no Biblical basis for the
2nd atonement step they believe exists. The
assertion of an entry into the Holy of Holies in
1844 has no basis. Christ’s death, burial and
resurrection is all the atoning act needed to
fulfill God’s plan.
SDA.. Death=sleep
 They believe the dead are in an unconscious
state who will awake at the coming of
Christ.
 Our response: The Bible implies that
Christian’s spirits go to be with the Lord
immediately after death. They will return
with Christ and at that time receive a
resurrected body (John 11; 2 Cor 5; Phil 1;
1 Thess 4; 2 Tim 1)

 They believe the last days are upon us.
 They believe that a specific sign, namely
mandatory, world-wide legal requirement for

SDA.. Judgement
 They believe that after the Millennial
reign, a 2nd resurrection of those not
saved will occur. The unsaved will be cast
into a lake of fire and no longer exist.
 Our response: The Bible affirms the
doctrine of an eternal hell. Christ affirms
this teaching (Matt 18 and 25; Mark 9;
Rev 20-22).
Witnessing to SDA
 Have a clear understanding of what individual
members believe
 understand their legalistic attitude against
Sunday worship
 they are Christian but their beliefs differ sharply
from ours on the nature of worship, the state of
death, and the 1844 2nd atonement process.
 Relate to them the doctrine of grace and
scripture dealing with life after death. Relate
that White’s teachings are unfounded.

Community of Christ (COC)
 Official name: Formerly known as the
Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints (LDS)
 Headquarters:Independence Missouri
 Membership: 250 worldwide
 50 countries
 Original leader= Joseph Smith Jr and
Joseph Smith III. Current leader is W.
Grant McMurray
Background
 Similar to present Mormons but differing
in some areas.
 Represents a split over church leadership
back in the 1800s.
 Joseph Smith’s oldest son was rejected
by the LDS in favor of Brigham Young.
His mother (Emma Smith) insisted that
Joseph Smith III had been named the
successor by his father. Part of the LDS
membership agreed and a new church
was formed.
COC-Background
 Until 1996 all Presidents of the
Reorganized Church of Latter Day
Saints were direct descendents of
Joseph Smith.
 Joseph Smith had originally
planned for a great temple in
Independence, Missouri. The
RCLD dedicated a temple in 1994
near the original planned site. The
RCLD officially changed its name
to Community of Christ in 2001

COC-Background
 While still having much Mormon
influence, the COC has distanced
itself from this teaching in the last
20-30 years.
 They now state no official creed
must be accepted by its members
as opposed to that of its Mormon
roots.
COC-Background
 The COC have numerous beliefs that
are counter to accepted Christian
thought
 Their concept of God, Jesus, man and
salvation is not fully the same as that of
evangelicals
 Do not be deceived, they are not
Christians.
COC Chief Outlets
 Centered mostly in the MidWest
 Not as missionary-minded as the
Mormons
COC Scripture Authority
 They accept the Bible but only the Joseph
Smith translation.
 The Book of Mormon
 The Doctrines and Covenants
 Our response: Their interpretation of scripture
is not based on inspiration. The additional
works they hold as authoritative have no merit
COC- Who is God?
 Their statement of faith indicates a belief in the
Trinity.
 However, they never refer to God as “Father”
 It does not appear to accept the unique identity
of each member of the Trinity, rather a
modalistic view is held
 Our response: The Father, Son and Holy Ghost
are separate members of the Trinity with
unique characteristics. They are each distinct.
COC-Who was Jesus?
 They state Jesus is “God with us”. However they
do not assign him the full character of his being
 Our response: Jesus was the only Son of God.
No one is like him. He was born of a virgin and
lived as man and God. He was sin-less. He is co-
equal with God.

COC-Who is the Holy Spirit?
 The deity of the Holy Spirit is
accepted but He is not given the
fullness of his being. Again it is
more of a multibeing God they
report
 Our response: The Holy Spirit is the
in-dwelling of Christ. He is a part of
the Trinity, not just a force used by
the Father
COC-How are we saved?
 They say salvation is through baptism and
discipleship. They do not fully examine the need for a
personal response to God’s offer of grace
 Our response:we obtain salvation as a gift of God,it is
not of works.
COC-The Church
 They believe that their church is the true restored
church and that no others meet this criteria.
 They also believe they are directly related to Aaron
and Melchisedec.
 Our response: There is no true church. Joseph Smith’s
original teachings cannot be substantiated scripturally
or historically.
COC-Belief in Sacraments
 They believe in the same eight sacraments as that of the
Mormons.
 Observance of these sacraments and ordinances are linked to
salvation and church discipline
 Our response: The Bible teaches two ordances (the Lord’s
Supper and Baptism).
Witnessing to COC
 They believe in many of the same ideas as the
Mormons’
 Share the plan of salvation
 Share the deity of the Godhead, the unique nature of
the Father, Son and Holy Ghost
