What is Nanotechnology ?
Nanotechnology is the engineering of functional systems at the
molecular scale. Nanotechnology is the use and application of
materials with sizes in the nanometer(10-9
m ) range. Nanotechnology
("nanotech") is manipulation of matter on an atomic, molecular, and
supermolecular scale. It defines nanotechnology as the manipulation
of matter with at least one dimension sized from 1 to 100 nanometers.

Definition Of Nanomedicine
• NanomedicineNanomedicine is defined as the monitoring, repair,is defined as the monitoring, repair,
construction and control of human biologicalconstruction and control of human biological
systems at the molecular level, using engineeredsystems at the molecular level, using engineered
nanodevices and nanostructures. Nanomedicine isnanodevices and nanostructures. Nanomedicine is
simply the application of nanotechnologies in asimply the application of nanotechnologies in a
healthcare setting using nanoparticles.healthcare setting using nanoparticles.
Why Nanomedicine ?
• Disease and ill health are caused largely by damage at
the molecular and cellular level
• Today’s surgical tools are huge and imprecise in
comparison

Materials for use in diagnostic and
theraputic applications
8
Gold nanoparticle Magnetic nanoparticle Quantum dots
Various kinds of Nanosystems in use
• Drug delivery
• Treatment of cancer
• Tissue engineering
• Medical devices
• Nanoshells
• Nanopores
• Tectodendrimers
9
Drug delivery
 Nanotechnologies provided the
possibility of delivering drugs to specific
cells using nanoparticles.
 The overall drug consumption and side-
effects may be lowered significantly by
depositing the active agent in the
morbid region only and in no higher
dose than needed.
 Targeted drug delivery is intended to
reduce the side effects of drugs with
concomitant decreases in consumption
and treatment expenses.
10
Treatment of cancer
 Nanoparticles(like nanoshells, QDs) allows for many functional groups
which can seek out and bind to certain tumor cells. Additionally, the
attached small size of nanoparticles (10 to 100 nanometers), allows
them to preferentially accumulate at tumor sites.
11
12
Tissue engineering
Nanopores
Application of Nanomedicine
• Diagnostic
Imaging and identification.
• Therapeutic
Delivering medication to the exact location.
Killing of bacteria, viruses & cancer cells
Repair of damaged tissues.
13
Advantages of nano medicine
• Drug delivery to the exact location.
• Lesser side effects.
• Molecular targeting by nano engineered devices.
• Detection is relatively easy.
• No surgery required.
• Diseases can be easily cured.
Disadvantages of nano medicine
• Not practical yet.
• High cost.
• Implementation difficulties.
14
Future scope
 Nanosize Materials have found practical implementation in the field
of medical diagnoses with the proper and efficient delivery of
pharmaceuticals.
 While on the one hand, attempts are being made to develop
accurate and versatile biomerkers for various kinds of diseases.
 Research is constantly being driven to develop new protocols for
creating synergies between bio-and nano-systems. Such nanotools
still await construction, but they may become a reality in the near
future.
15
Conclusion
•Although realization of the full potential of nanomedicine may
be years or decades away, recent advances in
nanotechnology-related drug delivery, diagnosis, and drug
development are beginning to change the landscape
medicine.
•Nano therapies could, in the long term, be much more
economical, effective and safe and could greatly reduce the
cost of current medical procedures.
•So, Nanomedicine is future medicine.
