4. CONFIRMATION
• One of three sacraments of initiation
• Confirmation is a completion of our baptismal grace
• Leading the individual toward a more intimate union with Christ
• A more lively familiarity with the Holy Spirit
• “Through Confirmation, the baptized are more perfectly bound to the
Church, and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit”
- (CCC, 1285)
5. WHAT CONFIRMATION IS NOT
•a graduation or adulthood in faith
•a completion of learning
6. IN THE OLD TESTAMENT
• The prophets announced that the Spirit of the Lord would rest on the Messiah
for his saving mission (Isa 11:2, 61:1)
• Holy Spirit resting on Jesus at his baptism was the sign that this was he who
was to come (Mt 3:16-17)
• The Holy Spirit was not to remain just with the Messiah, but be present to his
people (Ez 36:25-27)
• “And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out my spirit on all
flesh...and it shall come to pass that all who call upon the name of the Lord
shall be delivered” (Joel 2:28-32)
7. IN THE NEW TESTAMENT
• You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you
shall be my witnesses (Acts 1:8)
• Peter says the outpouring of the Holy Spirit is the sign of the messianic age
(Acts 2:11)
• “They sent to them Peter and John, who came down and prayed for them
that they might receive the Holy Spirit, for the Spirit had not yet fallen on any
of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
They then laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit.” Acts
8:14-17
8. EFFECTS OF SACRAMENT

• Increase and deepening of baptismal grace
• Unites us more fully to Christ
• Increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us
• Renders our bond with the Church more perfect
• Special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the faith
9. WHO CAN RECEIVE CONFIRMATION?
• Every person not yet confirmed can and should receive the sacrament
• Sometimes called the “sacrament of Christian maturity”
• One must be in the state of grace
10. THE CELEBRATION
• Renewal of baptismal promises and the profession of faith
• Extension of hands over the whole group
• Essential Rite
• Anointing with chrism on the forehead
• “Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit”
• Sign of peace

13. PRAYER FOR YOUNG ADULTS
Gracious and Loving God,
Help us young men and women to be a light for all the world to see,
in all the places we live and work. Let our light shine for all peoples:
for our families,
for our church communities,
for our cultures and societies,
for our economic and political systems,
for our whole world.
Make us bearers of Christ's peace.
We ask this of you, in Christ's name. Amen.
