Readitfor.me interview with Jane Chen
1. “Life is way too
short to be doing
something that you
really don’t care
deeply about.”
Remarkable ideas from JANE CHEN
2. This Readitfor.me Remarkable Business // Remarkable Life
interview is with JANE CHEN. SHe’s the co-founder of Embrace, a
social enterprise startup that aims to help 20 million premature
and low birth-weight babies born every year. She’s a TED Fellow
and she’s out to change the world.
3. ? What are your top
three pieces of advice
for building a
remarkable business
5. Be very clear about the value
that you want to play in this
world and think about how
that aligns with your own
values and purpose.
6. People ultimately don’t buy
what you do, they buy why
you do it. When you are clear
about that why you are able to
inspire others, attract the best
talent, build loyal customers.
7. There’s going to be many
moments when you want to
give up, but when you are
rooted in that purpose it will
always serve to keep you
going.
9. As an entrepreneur you will
never have all the answers. For
people who are adequately
driven you want to be able to
get more and more data, but at
some point you have to hone
and trust your intuition.
10. When you are doing something
very new you’re just never going
to have all the information you
need, so often times you need to
just go with your gut and be
very comfortable with that.
11. The key is to think about your
decisions not as a final decision, but
use the data that you have to run
small experiments. Run as many
experiments as you can, collect data
along the way, and then use that
data to decide what direction you
need to go further in or what
direction you need to pivot towards.
13. It is a matter of empowerment, of
trust, and being okay with failure.
Ultimately some people will fail,
but failing early and failing often is
good because you can learn from
those mistakes and move on. It’s
something we try to encourage and
reward within the organization.
14. Letting go means realizing and
accepting that not everything is
going to go perfectly, that there are
going to be failures within the
organization, and trusting and
empowering people to do their jobs.
15. ? what are your top
three pieces of advice
for leading a
remarkable life
17. Life is way too short to do
something that you don’t care
deeply about, whatever that is,
and it is important to take the
risk, and do something that you
deeply care about and are
excited about.
18. I think people are sometimes as
excited about the process as
opposed to the end result. I think
to do something that you just
don’t care deeply about, in some
way or another, I think you will
not be successful, you will not
achieve the ultimate result as you
will when you really believe in it.
20. There are studies that show that
when a leader is in a good
mood, the rest of the
organization is much more
positive, much more optimistic
about reaching its goals, people
are much more willing to help
each other within the company.
21. Being deliberate and not feeling
guilty is important. You’re running a
marathon, not a sprint, and in my
work, if we want to make an impact
it’s going to be at least a 10 year
journey, if not more.
23. Every time I see something
beautiful, like a landscape, it
would remind me of something
beautiful that I get to see every
day in my work, from all of the
people that have come together
to help this cause.
24. I think if everyone takes a look
around them and appreciates
that beauty in the world, then
it will inspire them to change
the world in their own ways.
