Saint anthony of padua
1. In Padua, Saint Anthony, Portugese Priest of the Order of Minors,
Confessor and Doctor of the Church, illustrious for his life, for
miracles and for preaching, who, a year after his death, was
assigned by Pope Gregory to the canon of saints.
2. Saint Anthony was born in Portugal, in Lisbon, in 1195,
blessed by God spiritually and materially. Born of noble
parents. He was baptised wth the name Ferdinand.
3. After the first education received in the paternal house from a
canonical uncle, he continued his education in the episcopal
school annexed to the Curia. With age he also grew in
humility, combined with contempt for worldly glories
4. Feeling led to solitude, the Saint soon
thought of retiring to a convent and chose
the Canons Regular of St. Agustine. There
he gave himself with such fervor to the
mortification of the flesh, to withdrawal
and to an industrious silence, as to
become an example for his brothers.
5. At about 15 he enters the Augustinian convent of St.
Vincent, outside the walls of Lisbon, consecrating
himself to God. He lives here for about two years.
6. He moved to Coimbra, at that time the capital of
Portugal, probably to avoid the distractions
caused by friends and relatives of his native city
7. He remained in Coimbra for 8
years, deepening his religious
formation and dedicating himself
to the study of the human and
biblical sciences and theology.
9. It was in 1220 that Fernando came into contact with the Friars Minor,
religious animated by Francis of Assisi in distant Italy. In fact, the relics of five
Franciscan missionaries tortured and killed in Morocco are brought to
Coimbra, in the church of the Holy Cross, right where Ferdinand was. -
Ferdinand saw the bodies, that they had been brought to Portugal in 1220,
10. he decided to follow their example: Ferdinand wished to
receive martyrdom, if it pleased the Lord; and for this
purpose, he abandoned the convent of the Holy Cross, and
entered the convent of the mendicant friars of Coimbra,
11. His meeting with the friars proved to be fundamental in his
journey of faith: to everyone's surprise, he decided in
September 1220 to leave the Augustinian Canons to join
the followers of Francis of Assisi taking the name Anthony.
12. Anthony nurtured a strong vocation to be a missionary and, in
particular, to martyrdom: and with this ideal he leaves for Morocco.
On arriving in Morocco, however, Anthony contracted a serious
disease: he was forced to rest and could not preach. After some time –
still sick - he just has to surrender to God's will and return home.
13. On the return journey from Morocco, a storm
pushed the boat towards the Sicilian coast.
14. He spent a few months in
Messina, in the Franciscan
convent, and the superior
of this convent took him
to Assisi for the General
Chapter. There Anthony
met Saint Francis of Assisi.
16. MEETINGS WITH SAN FRANCIS – 1 - In 1221, Anthony participated in the Chapter;
2 - In 1224 - according to the legend - Francis miraculously appeared to
Anthony at the Chapter of Arles, while Anthony preached to the friars on the
theme of the Cross.
3 - The third form of contact is undoubtedly more important, the testimony of
the letter that Francisco sends to Anthony between 1223 and 1224, in which
he authorizes him to teach theology to the friars, while fmaking sure that this
does not interfere with their prayers.
17. Anthony was sent to Romagna, to the hermitage of
Montepaolo, near Forlì, to devote himself to prayer,
mediation and humble service to his brothers.
18. He led a hermit life in a convent near Forlì. He was destined to the humble
profession of a cook and he lived in the shadows until his superiors,
sensing his extraordinary qualities as a preacher, sent him to preach
in northern Italy and France, against the heresy of the Albigensians.
19. In September 1222 priestly ordinations were celebrated
in Forlì. The preacher invited for the occasion failed to
show: Anthony- a religious and priest - was invited to
replace him and reveales his talent as a preacher.
20. Anthony was sent to the roads of northern Italy and
southern France to animate people and countries with his
preaching of the Gospel, often confused by the rampant
heretical movements of the time. He also corrected the
moral decadence of some members of the Church. He
became famous as he passed through Montpellier,
Toulouse, Bologna, Rimini and Padua.
21. in 1226 Anthony was in Limoges, in France. He was
present in Assisi at the General Chapter of the Friars
Minor, held on Pentecost on May 30, 1227.
22. At the end of 1223 Anthony was also proposed to teach theology in
Bologna, a task he carried out for two years, at the age of 28-30.
Saint Anthony is one of the first religious dedicated to teaching
theology in the minority fraternity, receiving approval for this of St.
Francis in person through a letter that has reached us.
23. Anthony received the office of Provincial Minister (ie guide
of the Franciscan fraternities) of northern Italy, most likely in
the three-year period 1227-1230. The assignment involves
visiting numerous monasteries in northern Italy.
24. In Padua, Anthony made a
couple of short stays: the first,
between 1229 and 1230;
the second, between 1230 and 1231
25. Anthony showed that he preferred the city of
Padua and the small Franciscan community at
the simple church of Santa Maria Mater Domini.
26. Here he reconciled enemies, reduced the dissolute at your best,
persuaded the usurers to return money. There his word was like a dart
that went through hearts and inflamed them with love and virtue.
27. Anthony’s commitment to
preaching and the sacrament of
reconciliation during Lent 1231
may be considered his great
spiritual testament, and
so also his great care for the
poor and the evils of the city:
28. The fatigues of Lent exhausted him. After Easter he retired to
Camposampiero (a town a few kilometers from Padua) at the
hospitality of Count Tiso. He asked that a simple shelter be adapted
for him in a large walnut tree, where he spent his days in prayer
and in dialogue with the humble people of the country village.
29. Feeling close to the end of his life, he obtained permission to retire
in the hermitage of Camposampiero; here he spent his last days in
contemplation and in the ever purer exercise of the love of God.
30. One Friday - it is June 13, 1231 - he was taken ill. Placed on a
cart pulled by oxen, he was transported to Padua, where he
himself asked to be allowed to die. When he reached the
Arcella, a village on the outskirts of the city, murmuring the
words "I see my Lord", he died at the age of about 36.
31. After a few days, Anthony was buried in Padua, with a
solemn funeral at the church of Santa Maria Mater Domini,
his spiritual refuge in times of intense apostolic activity.
32. The body was probably not buried, but made to remain a little
raised in a marble urn, so that the devotees, more and more
frequent and numerous, could see and touch its ark-tomb.
33. A year after his death, the devotion of the Paduan people and the fame
of the many miracles performed convinced Pope Gregory IX to quickly
ratify the canonization and to proclaim him a saint on May 30, 1232
34. The Church proclaimed Saint
Anthony of Padua "doctor of the
universal church", with the title
of Doctor evangelicus in 1946
35. “Assidua”, the first biography of Saint Anthony, states that
he wrote his Sermones for Sundays during his stay in
Padua. Although the news is not entirely founded, it is
certain that this voluminous text addressed in a particular
way to the confreres to train them in preaching.
36. The construction of the Antonian monumental complex was begun in 1232
to guard the tomb of Sant'Antonio, who died in Padua in 1231, and stands
in the place where, since 1210, there was a church dedicated to Mary then
incorporated into the Basilica as the Chapel of the Madonna Mora . In 1229 the
friars' convent was built next to the church, probably founded by St. Anthony himself.
37. Evangelical Doctor – He was also a keen theologian. His writings,
written in the form of sermons - the Sunday Sermons with an appendix of
Marian Sermons and of Sermones de Sanctis - reflect the original state of
what was the first Franciscan theology that other great exponents will
see later in San Buen Juanaventura and in blessed Duns Scotus.
38. Saint Anthony wrote the
Sermons for Christian
formation. They deal with faith
and good manners. The Saint
teaches how to preach the
faithful the doctrine of the
Gospel, and value the
sacraments, especially penitence
and the Eucharist. The language
of the Sermons is medieval Latin.
They are learned sermons, rich in
quotations from Scripture which
often resort to the doctrine of
the Fathers and theologians,
philosophers and pagan poets;
In addition, it often shares
natural science expertise,
especially Aristotle and Solinus.
39. DEVOTION - the tredecina - By this term we mean, above
all, the thirteen days of preparation for the feast of
Sant'Antonio, which occurs on 13 June. It also refer to a
prayer consisting of thirteen invocations which cover the
most significant aspects of Anthony's life and holiness.
40. The Transit - It is the rite that recalls the last moments of Saint
Anthony's earthly life: warning of his near death, he had been
carried, in a cart pulled by oxen, from Camposampiero to Padua,
where he wanted to die. However, when he arrived at the gates
of the city, in a town called La Arcella, he was forced to stop and
there he expired serenely, comforted by the vision of Jesus.
41. The death occurred on Friday 13 June 1231, in the late afternoon. For this
reason, the friars of the Basilica, every Friday afternoon, remember the
moment of transit (that is, the passage from earthly life to eternal life).
Furthermore, every year, on the eve of 13 June, a suggestive historical re-
enactment takes place in the streets of the Paduan district of La Arcella.
42. The bread of the poor, - on his feast day (June 13) it is customary to bless small
loaves of bread, which are then distributed to the faithful and consumed for
devotion. Certainly this devotion derives from the initiative of the "bread of the
poor" which in the past was very much alive and widespread in the churches.
43. The remarkable and complex phenomenon
of charity that the Sanctuary has as a
reference point certainly depends on what
pilgrims or devotees, through the
"Messenger of Saint Anthony", make
available to the poor. Suffice it to recall the
moving episode of Tomasito's miracle and
that, the young mother who, having
obtained the healing of her son through the
intercession of the Saint, decides to offer
the convent for a certain time as much
bread as the child weighed, so much that
the friars gave it to poor mothers.
44. Miracles of Saint Anthony - The Saint shows the host to the mule and says: In virtue
and in the name of the Creator, whom I, despite being unworthy, really hold in my hands, I tell
you, O beast, and I command you to approach immediately and with humility and offer him
due veneration. And so it happens: Anthony hadn’t finished saying these words when the
mule lowered its head and kneels before the Sacrament of the Body of Christ.
45. St Anthony had said - "The foot that hits the mother or father deserves to be
amputated instantly." The man, moved by remorse, returned home and cut
off his foot. The news immediately spread through the city, reaching
Anthony's ears. The Saint immediately found the man and, after a prayer,
rejoined the amputated foot to his leg, making the sign of the cross.
46. Upon the arrival of the Anthont in Rimini, the heretical leaders gave the order to
ignore him with silence. He could not find anyone to talk to. The churches were
empty. He went out into the square, but there no one gave him any notice. He
walked along praying and thinking. When he reached the sea, he looked out and
began to call his audience: - Since you prove yourself unworthy of the Word of God,
here I am addressing the fish, to confuse your unbelief more openly. And hundreds of
fish emerge, ordered and throbbing, to hear the word of exhortation and praise.
47. Anthony then takes the newborn baby in his arms and says: "I order you in the
name of Jesus Christ, true God and true Man, born of the Virgin Mary, to tell me
in a clear voice, so that everyone can hear, who your father is. ”The child,
looking into his eyes the father, since he cannot move his little hands tied with
the bandages, says: " "This is my father!" And addressing the man, the Saint
adds: "Take your son, love your wife who is innocent and deserves all your trust "
48. Tomasito is a 20-month-old baby: his mother leaves him at home alone to play and soon finds
him lifeless, drowned in a basin of water. Desperate she invokes the Saint's help and in her
prayer she makes a vow: if she obtains the grace, she will give the poor as much bread as the
child weighs. The child miraculously recovers his life and thus the tradition of the "pondus
pueri" was born, a prayer with which the parents, in exchange for protection for the children
themselves, promised St. Anthony as much bread as the weight of the children.
49. St. Anthony demands that the miser not be buried in
consecrated land. Doctors quickly open the deceased's
chest. In fact, the heart is not in the rib cage and they
find it in the safe where he kept his money.
50. the saint scolds the tyrant - "O enemy of God, merciless tyrant, rabid dog, how long will you
continue to shed innocent blood of Christians? Listen carefully, the sentence of the Lord hangs
over your head, terrible and bitter!". But Ezzelino's reaction is unexpected: instead of giving
the order to his guards to assassinate the Franciscan friar, he orders that he be removed
without violence. And he adds: " Comrades, do not be surprised. I tell you in all truth, that I
saw a kind of divine splendor emanating from this father's face, which terrified me to such
an extent that, in front of such a terrible sight, I had the sensation of falling into hell ".
51. One night the count goes into his friend's room, when he sees an
intense glow coming out of the half-open door. Fearing a fire, he
pushes the door and remains motionless in front of the prodigious
scene: Anthony holds Baby Jesus in his arms. When he recovers from
ecstasy and sees Tiso, he is moved. The Saint begs him not to tell
anyone about the celestial apparition until after his death.
