This talk will step through the common operations and highlight the code responsible. Apache Cassandra solves many interesting problems to provide a scalable, distributed, fault tolerant database. Cluster wide operations track node membership, direct requests and implement consistency guarantees. At the node level, the Log Structured storage engine provides high performance reads and writes. All of this is implemented in a Java code base that has greatly matured over the past few years. This talk will step through read and write requests, automatic processes and manual maintenance tasks. I'll discuss the general approach to solving the problem and drill down to the code responsible for implementation. Existing Cassandra users, those wanting to contribute to the project and people interested in Dynamo based systems will all benefit from this tour of the code base.

This session will re-evaluate Cassandra’s relationship with runtime and build systems, pointing out ways that the existing systems fall down, and identifying avenues for improvement. Over the past few years, a number of platforms have emerged for running user code. Container runtimes like Docker, container orchestrators such as Kubernetes, and metrics collections agents like Prometheus and Spectator have all gained popularity and mind-share. Cassandra functionality such as metrics, bootstrapping, and monitoring integrates with the newer paradigms, but in an ad-hoc and improvised fashion. By taking a purposeful approach to integrating with these new methods of deployment, the Cassandra community can more fully benefit from their advertised strengths. The Cassandra build system based on Ant+Ivy dates to the early 2000’s, and reflects legacy complexity that could be avoided with modern build systems. Cassandra’s system package builds are not much better and often fail to integrate with industry standards such as systemd. Iterating on the existing systems is difficult, but this technical debt slows innovation in our build systems. In this talk, we propose solutions to make building, deploying and monitoring Cassandra easy and low overhead, while taking advantage of cloud advancements wherever possible.

Spark SQL Catalyst optimizer, post query plan optimization, compiles the SQL query to Java code. Without code generation, such query expressions would have to be interpreted for each row of data, by walking down a tree of nodes. This introduces large amounts of branches and virtual function calls that slow down execution. With code generation, a query is collapsed into a single optimized function that eliminates multiple function calls and leverages CPU registers for intermediate data. This code is then compiled in runtime to Java bytecode using Janino compiler. This presentation focuses on further catalyst code generation optimizations possible using function outlining. Automatic code generation tools generally tend to generate huge optimized functions. Large functions that are frequently executed might degrade runtime performance by preventing JVM optimizations such as function inlining. To avoid this, code generation tools should try to contain independent logic into separate functions. This presentation will take the audience through the Spark Catalyst Code generation, how automatic split of large functions into smaller functions was achieved and the performance benefits associated with it

We will dissect the world famous todo app that provides a REST API (which is the foundation of microservices) with data backed by Apache Cassandra. We will leverage the TODO MVC and the TODO backend projects with the back end that we will build with Quarkus and Cassandra. Attendees will get an overview of Cassandra, including the driver for Quarkus. Through live coding (that attendees can try out later) in a cloud-based environment, primarily in Quarkus and Cassandra, attendees will understand how to implement and connect the APIs to the backend and leverage the generic client(s)provided. After attending this session attendees will walk away with a good understanding of implementing microservices using Cassandra and Quarkus. They will also get a working knowledge of how Astra (Cassandra as a service) can be leveraged in other solutions.
