1. SEO Tutorial - How Do I Optimise My Website
Before you even think about the design of your website you should first think about what you want your
website to be optimised for.
Your website will no doubt have an umbrella topic with related sub topics / pages.
In order to be found for your website content you need research the Keyword Phrases people use when
they search for your services or products.
A keyword phrase is a string of words someone might search for your services. For example, to learn
how to optimise a website a person might search: 'website SEO tutorial' or 'website optimisation'.
In this SEO tutorial I will show you how to optimise you website step by step. Optimising your website
involves:
Using Google’s keyword tool to find keywords for your website
Check your competitor’s keyword phrases
Global keyword phrase list
Writing Web Page Metadata Descriptions
Writing Web Page Content
Submitting your site to Google
Conclusion
USING GOOGLES KEYWORD TOOL TO FIND KEYWORDS FOR YOUR WEBSITE
The part of creating a website is to ensure you first have all of the Keyword Phrases needed for your
website to stand a good chance of being found in a Google search.
If you haven't already, create a free Google Account www.google.com.au
Log into your Google Account and go to: https://adwords.google.com/o/KeywordTool
2. • Select your currency
• Ensure your location is set to the country you live in
• Select keyword phrase match phrase to "Phrase" which means: The sum of search volumes that
include the whole phrase or near variants of the whole phrase.
• Then in the 'Word or phrase' field type in your primary / seed keyword that you would like your
website to be found for. In this example we'll search 'Landscape gardener'.
• Press 'Search'.
Sort the keyword suggestions by 'Local Monthly Searches'. Local in this case refers to your country. You
now need to look at the keywords which have high Local Monthly Search but have Low or Medium
competition.
3. Make a list of up to 10 keyword phrases which you think best reflect your website using the above
criteria.
"landscaping"
"garden design"
"gardener"
"garden services"
"landscape services"
"garden maintenance"
"landscape contractors"
CHECK YOUR COMPETITORS KEYWORD PHRASES
You will always have competition online which means it can be difficult to optimise your site in a
competitive industry. The upside to this is that you can see what your competitors are doing. It's
important to remember not to simply copy keyword phrases but cross reference keyword phrases to see
which ones are working for the sites at the top of Google.
For this example we want to see who's at the top for 'Landscape gardener'. So go to Google.com.au and
search 'Landscape gardener'.
When you type your search Google also offers up some suggestions which we can add to our list above.
In our case Google suggested the following which we can use:
• landscape gardeners Melbourne
• landscape gardeners
• landscape gardeners easter suburbs Melbourne
Once you have searched Google we want to look at the top three organic listings on Google. Organic
listings are at the top of the search for their content and amount of other sites linking to them.
4.
5. There are three types of listing on Google:
Paid Google AdWords. These listing are at the top in yellow and in the right hand side bar.
Google places listing. These listings have a little push pin that relates to the business location on the
map.
Organic listings: These are the most trusted listings because the pages listed are there because the
content is the most relevant.
Click on the first organic listing. Look at the browser page title and make a note of the keywords used.
The browser page title is one of the most important SEO components of the page. In this example the
browser keywords used are "Landscaping & Gardening".
6. Now look at the words used on the page. Make a note of keyword phrases which you might not have
thought of or might have missed. Ie:
Landscape design
Landscaping & Gardening
Landscape gardener cost
We now need to look at the page source. If you're using Firefox press Command + U. If you're on a PC
using Explorer go to View + Source.
A new window will open up. You need to find <meta name="keywords" tag to see a list of the keywords
this site has used. Make a note of any keyword phrases you haven't found which you think are relevant
to your site.
It's also important to take a look at meta name="description" to see how they have described this page.
You need to repeat this process for the other top two websites.
You will now have quite a list on your hands. This can be considered as your Global Keyword Phrase List.
It's important to revisit this list and make it more focused. Take a good look at the list and only keep the
phrases that really represent your website as a whole.
WRITING WEB PAGE METADATA DESCRIPTIONS
You now have your Global Keyword Phrase List. You should also have a list of all of the pages that are
going to be on your website.
Each page on your website needs to be unique and optimised for the content on that page. Using the
following formula creates the following metadata for each and every page of your website.
############################################

Browser Page Title (10 words max include keyword for this page)
Landscape Design and Landscaping Services Melbourne

search results).

Meta Keywords (Use up to 10 keyword phrases which are variants on the main keyword
phrase).landscape design, landscaper designer, landscaping services, Melbourne, south eastern suburbs

WRITING WEB PAGE CONTENT
Each and every page on your website needs to be well written and have original content. The web page
content should be around 300-400 words.
On Page Title
The on page title should around 5 words long, include the pages main keyword phrase and be in a H1
tag.
Intro Paragraph
The intro paragraph should be around 25 words long, include your main keyword phrase and be in a H2
tag.
Body Copy
Break up your body copy into easy readable chunks. Give each chunk a sub-title, use a keyword variant
and be in a H3 tag. Use your main keyword phrases twice in the main body copy. In other instances use
variants on the keyword phrase.
Note: Your web page content should be informative, interesting and written for people - not search
engines.
SUBMITTING YOUR SITE TO GOOGLE
Once you have completed writing your web pages and implemented all of the keyword research you
need to submit your site to Google. In order to do this you will need to do the following:
Remove all web pages containing any dummy text
Create an XML sitemap which will list all of the pages on your site. Go to http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/
to create the sitemap.xml file. Upload the file to your public_html folder.
While logged into your Google Account search Google Webmaster Tools and Add your site. You will
need to follow the instructions to verify your website. Once you site is verified manage your site and add
the sitemap by going to Optimization / Sitemaps and click ADD/TEST SITEMAP
8. Once this is done you need to submit each and every URL on your site by going to Health / Fetch as
Google. Here you can submit every URL on your website so that Google will crawl your site.
CONCLUSION
Your website should now have well written content and be optimised for the services you provide. You
have also submitted your site to Google and invited Google to crawl your web pages.
The only other thing left to do is to add Google Analytics to monitor how people find your site. This is
quite important so you can monitor if the keywords you have implemented are working for your site.
Optimising your website is not an easy task and it's not finished once you have gone through all of the
points above. You will have to continually monitor your sites performance for the keywords and keep
tweaking the page content and metadata to keep your page content in with a running on Google.
