Presentation by Simon Thornber, lead of the Pistoia Alliance sequence services working group, about the RFP issued for the second phase of the project.
3. The Vision
Pre-Competitive services (from
the perspective of the Life
Science industry).
Common use cases. Security built-in from the beginning
IT partners to develop, deploy &
support these services long Easy collaboration
term.
⢠IT Services (e.g. security, Huge scalability
authentication)
⢠Platform Services (Hosting Public / Private / Commercial data all in one interface
services)
⢠Data Services (e.g. Genome Economies of scale deliver
data)
decreased total cost of ownership
⢠Training & Support

4. Rome Wasnât built in a day.
Break the challenge down into 1 year phases.
Phase 1 POC: 2010 â 2011 (completed)
⢠Proof of concept.
⢠Focus on non-functional Requirements.
⢠Basic Functional Requirements.
Phase 2 Pilot: 2011 -2012 (just starting)
⢠Building on the success of phase 1.
⢠Focus on Functional Requirements. (NGS)
⢠Mainly open source tools.
Phase 3 Production: 2012-2013
⢠Addition of commercial tools / algorithms.
⢠Increasing sophistication of services.
⢠Vibrant marketplace â user choices available.

5. Phase 1 â âProof of Conceptâ
⢠4 Successful POCs.
⢠All security tested
by AT&T.
⢠Further discussions
about production
deployment.

6. Phase 2 âPilotââ Overview
⢠Building on Phase 1
⢠Broadening the functional requirements - NGS
⢠We are inviting service providers to provide a system for the
analysis and storage of NGS data.
â This will demonstrate their ability to support scientistsâ needs for
sequence analysis and in so doing demonstrate (to users and suppliers)
the feasibility of moving such systems from inside companies to an
external, shared, service provider.
⢠Phase 2 therefore requires ânear productionâ systems capable of
being used on real data by regular users.

7. Phase 2
Data Loading
Core Functionality
Data Management
Simple Analysis pipelines
Expert user modifications / loading of new algorithms

9. Timelines
⢠Proposals to be ready by CoB UK time, Friday
23rd September 2011.
⢠Proposals to receive funding will be notified in
October 2011.
⢠Security / functional testing to be run in second
half of March 2012.
⢠Pilots to be presented to the Pistoia Alliance at a
conference in April 2012.
9
10. Proposal Format (1/2)
⢠Proposals to take the form of:
â a written response to the RFP
â A short presentation to be given to the Sequence
Services team via TC / Web-ex.
⢠It is anticipated that to meet the full RFP in the
time frame will be a challenge, but a pilot:-
â should clearly demonstrate core functionality
â show ability to expand to meet the whole RFP where
any functionality is missing.
10
11. Proposal Format (2/2)
⢠All pilots must provide a clear rationale / business
model that demonstrates a commitment to on-
going support and development.
⢠Note:
â Price information is NOT to be shared with the Pistoia
Alliance.
â Price information may only be discussed - as part of
individual, confidential, contract negotiations - with
individual service consumers.
11
12. Shared Risk Funding
⢠The Pistoia Alliance is prepared to provide
up to (US) $50,000 towards development
costs for a limited number of proposals.
