This is a useful exercise for getting the researchers to think about their own development in its totality, encourages them to see a bigger and more realistic picture. It is worth mention by the trainer that this areas may change over time.
Achievements can be literally anything, from graduating as an undergrad to the first time you rode a bike. The aim of this exercise is to remind the researchers how it felt to achieve something that was difficult or hard earned and how they felt when they reached their goal.
When I’m at my best. On your good days, when you are on top of your “game”, what elements or support structures are in place when you are most effective? What to you need to work to the limit of your potential?
The completed development log should be discussed with a career/development advisor. Each section should be explored with the researcher so that they can explain their answers and take ownership of them. Any answers that to do not feel like a good “fit” should be discussed further until clarified.
Dis-empowering beliefs will emerge over the course of discussion (Example: “I could never stand up in front of a large group of people and make a presentation.” Why? Ask open ended questions.
