The amount of people in Arab Nations holding a B.Sc., B.A., Diploma, M.Sc., and Ph.D. is huge (1), most of which include a project/research applying or explaining the theoretical part of the thesis. Unfortunately most of them do not reflect a real problem or contribute in solving an existing problem. Therefore you can detect hundreds of thousands of thesis and research works being kept on the shelf unutilized. On the other hand a huge number of organizations with different categories such as manufacturing, service, education, health care, nonprofit, etc.; have severe problems needing to be solved. In addition to another big problems that are facing our Arabic Communities such as unemployment. Due to the absence of central planning, an accumulation of the above mentioned issues has caused a severe gap between the actual community requirements and the academic and research work. Each of community and academia are now isolated in a separate island. This isolation has caused another problem that is the gap between academic curriculums and needs of labor market. The new problem causes inadequacy of most graduates to labor market needs, and thus enroll them into the convoy of unemployment.

The International Standard Name Identifier, or ISNI, was created to identify the millions of contributors to creative works and those active in their distribution, including researchers, inventors, writers, artists, visual creators, performers, producers, publishers, aggregators, and more in order to resolve the problem of name ambiguity in search and discovery. Now, Laura Dawson, Product Manager of Identifier Services at Bowker, will show us how ISNI has developed since the standard was first published in 2012. How is it managed? Who receives numbers? What impact has it had on publishing? And how can it be incorporated into current metadata management and distribution?

The Early Development Instrument (EDI) provides a population measure of how children are developing and the extent to which they are ‘school ready’ or ‘ready to learn’. Two national Australian Early Development Census (AEDC) collections have offered a great deal of descriptive data about the developmental domains for each community but policy makers and practitioners are still faced with the challenge of how best to interpret AEDC information and take action. This presentation examines a number of underexplored aspects of the AEDC including: the importance of combining AEDC data with local, contextual evidence, why special needs children are not included in the reporting of the AEDC and the possible impact on your community, and closing feedback loops so Early Childhood Educators have the opportunity to be more involved in AEDC-related action.

Neil will focus on the lessons from the Jisc-APC pilot, and how the workflows around all forms of OA are changing the roles and responsibilities of information professionals within and beyond the HEI. There are new drivers (eg the HEFCE REF OA policy), new points of contact / transaction (eg Gold OA payments of various kinds), and new opportunities (eg to populate repositories). The talk will explore the workflows that are emerging as effective in addressing these changes, and their implications for all concerned.
